Beyond the Books - Best Moments in Blogging

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

Today's Beyond the Books topic is: Best Moments in Blogging

Oh, my. This will be a tough one. I've been blogging for over ten years now. I also have had twelve blogs through the years and contributed to several others. I should be down to five active blogs now and I contribute to Christian Children's Authors twice a month. I'll do my best to keep this list down to a minimum.

  1. My first blog post at The Book Connection. By the time I started this blog, I had already been blogging for at least 18 months. My main reason for switching is that I had been hosting virtual book tours for Pump Up Your Book (Pump Up Your Book Promotion at the time), and my aspiring author blog was more about other authors than my writing. In order to be fair to the authors I was hosting (and my creativity), I wanted to separate them from my own rambles. It was a simple welcome post that started off this blog in July 2007.
  2. First review of a book an author sent me. I started out by blogging about books on my own shelves, but by asking (nagging) authors and hosting book tours, I was able to get some new books sent my way. I truly enjoyed Trust in the Wind by Vicki M. Taylor and still remember bits and pieces of it.
  3. First time hosting an author who became a friend. Sometimes you get books from authors and they thank you for a review, but you never see them again. Every once in a while you're lucky and that author becomes a friend. Such is the case with Marilyn Meredith. A talented, award-winning author of two of my favorite series, she never ceases to amaze me with all she does. Her friendship has been a true blessing.
  4. First book I read by Kathi Macias. If there is an author whose books have changed my life, it would have to be Kathi Macias. Beyond Me: Living a You-First Life in a Me-First World made me stop, reflect, and consider how I approach life. Many of her books--fiction and non-fiction--have touched me this way. I consider her a dear friend.
  5. Starting The Children's and Teens' Book Connection (TC&TBC). When I started The Book Connection, I covered books for all ages. I eventually felt that books for younger people needed their own space, so in July 2009 I started TC&TBC. In addition to books for pre-school through young adult (depending on content), this is the blog where I discuss my own writing for children.
  6. The year I read the most books. Though not impressive for everyone, in 2010 I read a record breaking 174 books. It started to go down after that year and now I am lucky to read 35 because my work schedule and family life are so nutty.
  7. Our first blog award. Back in 2009, The Book Connection was still a pretty new thing. Virtual book tours had really taken off and I was a busy gal coordinating them. That's when this blog received its first award. It received a couple of others, but I think blog awards got repetitive and people started saying they were award-free zones.
  8. Little Shepherd Breaks into Amazon Top 100 Books. When my first book, Little Shepherd, came out in 2010, I followed its rankings religiously. Not only did it hit the Amazon Bestsellers list in its category seven times during the early weeks of its release, it also broke into the Amazon Top 100 for large print children's books. I believe it made it up to #18. Not too shabby.
There are so many other great blogging moments that I better stop before this post becomes a novel. Thanks to everyone who has blessed me along this blogging journey. I've met a lot of wonderful people online and I've had the chance to read some fabulous books. Here's to many more blogging memories for years to come.

Freedom!

I cannot tell you have liberating it feels not to have to worry about reviewing books on a schedule. Beyond the Valley by Rita Gerlach is my last scheduled book review until the end of April, when I review two poetry books by Patricia Neely-Dorsey. After that, I only have Harkness by Michael Bigham to review on May 23rd. The rest of the year my plan is to review books already in my possession. My goal is to be able to open The Book Connection up for new review requests in November or at least by the end of the year.

That doesn't mean things will get boring around here. I need to update my Upcoming Events page, but it is fairly full for the next couple of months. And I'll be working on the 2013 Catch Up Reading Challenge, which means I'll be reviewing books from my TBR pile--and there are tons of them. Check out this post if you want to see some of them.

The past six years, I haven't had a ton of time to read solely for pleasure. I've almost always had books to review for book tours. I'm glad I decided to slow down a bit.

My other blogs will be busy. At The Busy Mom's Daily, I'm participating in the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge. My Christian book blog, Cheryl's Christian Book Connection, is now part of the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance, so it is updated a minimum of twice a week. I'll be reviewing, Last Chance for Justice by Kathi Macias there in May. I'm still hosting authors at The Children's and Teens' Book Connection. I review books there from time to time, in addition hosting authors. Though I don't talk about this blog a lot, I have a spicy romance blog that I update from time to time. There is a publisher whose books I promote there and I host the occasional book tour.

Thank you for your loyal readership. I hope you continue to enjoy all I have to offer at my blogs.

How Many Books Did You Read This Year?

It's that time of year again--the time when I get to thinking about how many books I've managed to read over the last 365 days. There is no contest. I'm not trying to read more books than someone else, but I am usually astounded by the sheer number of books that remain in my TBR pile come December 31st: the few books I've bought, the many books I've won, and those books I've received as gifts.

This year, I've written reviews for 174 books between this blog, Book Tours and More, and The Children's and Teens' Book Connection. I have 2 more books sitting on my desk just waiting for me to have a few moments to type up reviews, I am reading a book that I am providing an endorsement for, and I also have another book that I should finish tonight. So, when all is said and done, I'll have read close to 180 titles this year. Wow!

Feel free to let us know how many you've read this year. What were some of your favorites? What books are you looking forward to reading in 2011.

Happy New Year everyone!

Working through My TBR Pile

I'll spare you the laundry list of titles in my TBR Pile, but as you can see, I posted a bunch of reviews today. I'm definitely making progress. Right now I only have 16 books out of the 62 in my pile that have a deadline. The others are books I've won from giveaways, received as gifts for hosting authors, or purchased. In addition to the books I've already reviewed this weekend, I have read Harvest Moon by Krista D. Ball and Bowdancer III: Warrior Women by Janie Franz.

I am currently reading A Woman's Heart That Dances by Catherine Martin. Next up is The Chill of Night by James Hayman and Grounds for Murder by John Russo.

Until next time, keep reading!

Working through My TBR Pile

Is it truly possible that I haven't updated this list since May 17th? I guess so, because I don't see any other posts about my ever-growing TBR pile out there.

Life has been crazy. School ends for the girls tomorrow and I have a bunch of virtual book tour clients to carry me through the summer, so I haven't read as much as I would have liked; though I'm still making fairly decent progress.

I ended up resorting my TBR spreadsheet without realizing it would mess up how I had my current list running, so now you'll see that it is alphabetized instead. That's what I get for being impulsive. I've also got to tell you about a funny thing that happened.

Remember on May 17th when I said I made a decision to donate one of the books from my TBR pile to the school's summer fun basket my daughter's class was putting together? Well, guess who won that basket. My daughter! So, the book is back, but I'm still not going to list it here. I guess I must be meant to read that one.

Since my last list, I've read 15 books and reviewed 13. I have a review for Why God Matters by Karina Lumbert Fabian and Deacon Steven Lumbert scheduled for Thursday. Not reviewed yet are The Confessions of Catherine de Medici by C.W. Gortner and Confessions of a Prairie Bitch by Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson, Little House on the Prairie, NBC). Working through My TBR Pile

And the reading continues...

While it won't sound like I got a lot done since May 4th, the TBR pile will continue to dwindle as long as I don't take on too many new books. I feel confident, though, because even with a huge TBR pile, the majority of the books on it are books I want to read, not ones I have promised to review. The new ones I take on are for virtual book tours, either for my clients or for other publicists and authors, or standard review requests.

I've also made an executive decision to cut one book from my list: Reunion: A Novel by Therese Fowler. I received this book as a thank you for hosting the author last year. It still sounds like an interesting premise for a book, but we've been asked for donations to a Summer Fun basket to be raffled off at the school's Open House. I'll add some other things, but the beautiful cover with a woman walking along the beach will be a great addition. If I get to the point where my TBR pile dwindles low enough, I'll pick this book up for my Kindle.

Since last post, I've reviewed 7 books, some of which were already listed as read. I just finished and reviewed Downsized to Death by Patricia Gulley. I am currently reading More Than Conquerors by Kathi Macias, who is on tour with this second book of her Extreme Devotion series during the month of May, and America's Black Founders by Nancy Sanders. I'm also listening to Wishing for Tomorrow by Hilary McKay in the car. Next up is Chris Hoare's, The Wildcat's Burden.

Working through My TBR Pile

How's your TBR pile coming along? Mine is still a mountain, but I'm making some progress.

Since April 18th, I've read 13 books, some of which I spoke of last time, so I won't go into the details again. I'm doing my best not to take on many new books; though I had pre-ordered The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House by Melissa Anderson from Amazon and I broke away from my TBR pile to read that one. In case you missed it, Little House on the Prairie is my favorite show. While I don't get a chance to watch television these days, I have all the seasons on DVD. I've seen some of these episodes so many times that I could recite them by heart. I posted that review over at Laura's Little Houses if you would like to read it.

Here's what the TBR pile looks like right now. Anything in bold has been read. If I mentioned them last time, they've been deleted from the list.

Melinda and the Wild West: A Family Saga in Bear Lake, Idaho by Linda Weaver Clarke

Final Respects by F.M. Meredith, the first book in the Rocky Bluff P.D. series.

You'll see reviews come through for these ones soon. My review of The Christmas Pumpkin by Debbie Reece is available at my children's book blog, TC&TBC.

When I posted my last TBR pile update, I still had 61 titles listed. Let's see how things have changed--or not. The bolded books are ones that I've read since my update on April 5th.

That means that I've brought my TBR pile down to 59, and I'm doing my best not to request any new titles, though I think I have 2 more on the way that need to be reviewed at the beginning of summer. I know when we make it to North Carolina for the first two weeks of July that I'll do some catching up. I'll start with the oldest titles first and bring along any I need to read for virtual book tours. Usually I bring around a dozen books with me. It's a long drive to the Outer Banks, plus all I really feel like doing when I'm away is reading. I write a tiny bit, but reading while away is something I truly look foward to.

Working through My TBR Pile

I feel really good about this silly TBR pile right now. On March 28th, the total books stood at 61, with another book on the way. That book was Secret Sisters by Tristi Pinkston, which we reviewed earlier today.

I also added 4 new books to my list since I posted on March 28th. Two of these are virtual book tour clients (1 mine, 1 not), a former client of Pump Up Your Book Promotion, and a book I wanted to read because I enjoyed the author's interviews that I read at various blogs. I love discovering new authors!

Since my last post, I've reviewed 7 titles, and have 2 reviews waiting to be written. Here's what the pile looks like now. All bolded titles have been read since March 28th.
