Musing Mondays - April 4 Comfort Reads

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme now hosted at Jenn's new blog Books And A Beat that asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer:
  • I’m currently reading…
  • Up next I think I’ll read…
  • I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
  • I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I can’t wait to get a copy of…
  • I wish I could read ___, but…
  • I blogged about ____ this past week…
THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What is your favorite “comfort” read?

It's a snowy start to the week here in Massachusetts. Yesterday was crazy: high winds, blowing snow, and spots of blue sky and sunshine. It's snowing this morning too. I thought we were in spring, not winter.

Great question this week. Comfort reads are either fun or inspiring for me depending upon why I need the comfort.

If I am seeking a return to when my life was simpler or I wasn't facing so many decisions, it would be a book or series that I used to read regularly--or at least more than once.

If I am overwhelmed or feeling sad, I usually reach for something spiritual or inspiring.

And if I just want to read for the fun of it--something that is comfortable simply because it is purely for entertainment value--I might go with a romantic comedy or women's fiction.

How about you? What are some of your "comfort" reads?

Here is the (in)famous crash from the Tour of California that was originally seen live on NBCUniversal last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z_6qDX_Yh8

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Santa Ana, Orange, and Anaheim, California.

When did you begin writing?

I began writing blogs about my cycling adventures back in 2006.  I wrote a few articles published on Velonews years ago, too.  However, I didn’t start WRITING until last summer, when I was inspired to write When SHMACK Happens.

What is this book about?

At first glance, When SHMACK Happens is my story about perseverance, overcoming adversity, and the journey of achieving (and not quite) achieving big goals.  However, the bigger theme of the book is to encourage and share the tools the reader can use in their own lives to overcome their own challenges.  Adversity, or SHMACK, is universal to all of us.  It is not if but when.  And although the type and the intensity is unique, the tools we can use to overcome are the same.  I’ve used my life as a context to relate these in a tangible way… while also taking the reader on a ride where they will laugh, cry, and cheer.  I know my challenges are really minimal compared to many, but this God I know wants to act in everyone’s lives as much as He has in mine.  I hope to point people back to Him – to His love, His peace, and His strength.  In addition, hopefully I can open eyes and hearts to the idea that success comes with lots of hard work and perseverance.  Achieving a goal is going to be hard.  Adversity, failure, and redirection are all part of the process.  We need to remember that we are refined in the fires of life and rarely does growth come without struggle or stress.

What inspired you to write it?

I wrote When SHMACK Happens as I recovered from the Tour of California crash mentioned above.  In the immediate aftermath, I had an amazing peace and stillness about me.  Although my world had been rocked, and I was experiencing one of the most painful physical challenges ever, I had a very clear mind.  I could hear God pounding on my heart to “write the story that I (the Lord) have written into your life.”  After weeks of prayer, I realized that I needed to share how God had gotten me through everything, how timeless His word really was, and how incredible His peace and strength can be in the midst of our challenges.

How is it similar to other books in its genre? How is it different?

It’s an autobiography that covers the highs and lows of life through the eyes of an athlete.  It’s a story about overcoming adversity that will encourage and inspire.

It’s different because I actually think it crosses genres and is something young and old, male and female, athletes or not would enjoy reading.

My goal is for the reader to see what God can do more than to see what I’ve done.  I’ve tried to weave the scripture that has carried me through life into the story, so that it can be easily reapplied to their own lives.  I’ve also paralleled each part of my journey with a bible character to help show how timeless God’s word is while again demonstrating another way to apply it.  Finally, I wanted to juxtapose the pursuit of becoming a champion in sport (which could easily be a metaphor for whatever the reader’s individual pursuit in life is) with what God was doing in me as He worked (and is still working) through my SHMACKS to make me a spiritual champion.  Of course, it is a process that won’t be completed until I receive the crown of life, but it is still possible to share and encourage by talking about what has happened to date!  I think the combination of my experiences and the approach I took makes it very unique.

What is the most important thing readers can learn from your book?

If we can stand on the ROCK (Jesus) in the midst of our storms, not only will we survive, but God will be able to do great things in us and through us.

Where can readers purchase a copy?

It is available on Amazon’s USA site or the Europe site.

Here is the USA link: http://www.amazon.com/When-Shmack-Happens-Spiritual-Champion/dp/0991303008/

It can also be purchased at www.whenshmackhappens.com.

What is up next for you?

Right now, I am healing from a sacrum fracture while praying about the next steps in my cycling career.

I’m enjoying the opportunities to speak and share my story as they come.

I’m coaching, and I’m working on a new hand cycle vision for my nonprofit, The Dare To Be Project.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Nobody is too small, too weak, too young…or too anything in God’s hands.  It’s not about us or our job titles, because He will use us where we are.  It’s about what can happen when we make ourselves available and trust Him in the midst of our SHMACKS.  Christ’s power is always perfected in our weakness, and He wants to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.  The challenge is to persevere and be patient while trying to take on the perspective that comes from God’s viewpoint.

Interview with Siobhan Couture, Contributor to Pearls of Wisdom

Siobhan Coulter (pronounced She-von) is an Australian psychologist, intuitive energy healer, mother of twin boys and has been living in Singapore since 2007. She is passionate about past life regression healing, connecting to her power through her inner bliss and naturally birthing twins. Siobhan is delighted and proud to have her message recognised and published beside today’s most accomplished self-help authors. Additionally, Siobhan is adapting her chapter into a children's picture book, to empower kids to enjoy their Inner Bliss from an early age. Visit her online at www.siobhancoulter.com   and Facebook http://www.facebook.com/SiobhanCoulter1

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the small country town of Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. My primary school only had about 200 kids, so it was a great place to grow up with lots of rain, a close community of family and friends, and lots of opportunity for family time. Of course, as soon I was grown I couldn’t wait to spread my wings and discover the world!

When did you begin writing?

When I look back at my life I have always written, and always from the heart. I have a ritual I follow where I connect through my heart to the topic or person I want to write about. No one taught me this, it was just something I always did and still do. So as a child whenever I wanted to write on a card or send a letter to someone, that’s what I would do. The recipient would usually end up in tears being overwhelmed by my sentiments and love. I deemed the card a success if I got tears!

So writing from the heart has always been in my blood, but now it is happening in a different way. Now instead of connecting with others I am connecting to my higher self and my guides and I am writing about the wisdom I have learned so far on my life’s journey. Hopefully my chapter in Pearls of Wisdom will connect readers to their inner bliss so they can feel their Soul’s Joy, rather than reducing them to tears.

How did you get into this collection of inspiration with folks like Jack Canfield?

In 2011, all the thoughts and concepts I had been percolating in my head for the last few years, finally came together and formed a short story. As soon as I had written it, I turned to my husband and said "I don't know how or when, but this is going to get published!" I just knew it. So I shared it with a few friends and one sent me a link to Randy Davila, the CEO of Hampton Roads Publishing who was running a tele-class on getting your first book published. After the course, Randy invited the participants to submit a chapter to be considered for Pearls of Wisdom. So I submitted my story and it was accepted as a chapter. It has been an amazingly easy journey and a tale of simply knowing.

What is your chapter about?

In my chapter I express the simple truth that by Being You and doing things you love to do, will activate your power and connect you to your Inner Bliss – your Soul’s joy. When you connect to your inner bliss, you let it glow from every pore of your body; letting your power, your happiness, and your light shine out and illuminate the world. I like to call it “Glowing from the Inside-Out” and it’s what I think life is all about!

What kind of wisdom do you have to offer the reader?

The wisdom I share in my chapter comes the lessons I have learnt along my spiritual journey of nearly 20 years. It has been a journey of connecting to my power and becoming empowered to be the person I truly am – not the one I thought I should be. So the journey is really only just beginning, so stay tuned I am sure I will have more to share in the near future.

Most people know about Jack Canfield from the Chicken Soup books and Marci Shimoff from her Happy book … How would you like your readers to think of you? What is your “signature niche”?

Glowing from the Inside-Out – it’s what life is all about! By just Being You and doing things that you love to do, you connect to your inner bliss - your soul's joy. When you start letting your soul's joy shine out from you, you begin to Glow from the Inside-Out. You feel complete, joyous and free.

The publisher promises that the authors such as yourself are “up and coming” leaders in self-help. How does the publisher know this and what is your expertise in “self-help”?

After nearly 20 years of following my intuition and higher guidance, I am stepping into my power and am ready to share my message with the world. My skills, talents and experience are broad and varied. I am a registered psychologist in Australia and am also an intuitive energy healer. Before I had my twins and we moved to Singapore, I was in private practice specialising in past life regression and supporting others to connect to their empowerment. Also as a mother of twin boys, I am very passionate about naturally birthing twins.

What is your most central and compelling “pearl of wisdom”?

It is time to start consciously connecting to your soul's joy and start to live as your soul on the earth plane. Your soul is so joyous, so let it shine out from every pore of your body. Not only will you feel amazing and illuminate the world around you, but you will also inspire others to do the same. So live a life of love and joy today.

What do you think makes this book unique and who would want to read it?

Pearls of Wisdom is unique for two reasons. Firstly, each chapter contains a truly inspirational idea to change your life. The ideas are diverse, as are the authors who come from all areas of the globe. Secondly, Pearls of Wisdom is not an ordinary book. It contains the energy and love of great change. It is no coincidence that the book is being published now and people are being drawn to it. Pearls of Wisdom is part of the great shift of 2012. It is exciting, it's inspirational and it's time to live your best life now!

We often hear that the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” – how does that proverb apply to the 30 authors in this book?

I am just one author and I know that I have put my best inspirational ideas into my chapter plus all my positive and joyous energy. But Pearls of Wisdom has 29 other authors too and I know all of them have focused their loving energies into their chapters as well. So just imagine how amazing the energy of the book is, now that all these energies are combining and beginning to reach out to others. As a whole, Pearls of Wisdom will touch the lives of many and will inspire change like never before.

Where can readers purchase a copy?

Pearls of Wisdom can be purchased from my website soon as the shop is currently under construction. However books can be purchased directly from me, so just email me through my website and I will send you a signed, advanced copy with a special bookmark designed just for my chapter. The books are also available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble in the USA and Canada.

What is up next for you?

I am currently working on two books, firstly I am adapting my chapter into a children’s picture book, to empower kids to enjoy their Inner Bliss from an early age, and secondly I am writing my pregnancy and birth story of my identical twin boys called Naturally Birthing Twins. 2012 will also see me running workshops in Singapore, on Connecting to Inner Bliss and Glowing from the Inside-Out, as well as setting up a private practice with a wonderful friends and powerful Reiki healer. We are currently offering joint or separate healing sessions so we can give clients a super-charged energy and healing session. We are also planning weekend Healing Retreats to Bali.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I hope that people enjoy reading Pearls of Wisdom and my chapter. I hope it connects with something deep inside each of them which enables them to live their best life now. We are all on the same path albeit at different location on that path, and if the wisdom I have shared assists another to move forward on their path, then I am living my life well. I look forward to connecting with the readers as they connect to their Inner Bliss and begin to Glow from the Inside Out and illuminate the world. Let the light show begin!

Books for Moms

With Mother's Day quickly approaching, I figured I would feature some of the books that would make great gifts for Mom.

We reviewed Life is Tough - I Doubt I'll Make it Out Alive by Stacy Gooch-Anderson last month. What I enjoyed most about this book of humorous life lessons for moms is the way that Gooch-Anderson is easily able to reach the heart of her readers even when she is also tickling their funny bones. Read the review.

We also reviewed How Can I Run a Tight Ship When I'm Surrounded by Loose Cannons? - Proverbs 31 Discoveries for Yielding to the Master of the Seas by Kathi Macias in April. While this book tells of the author's struggle to become the virtuous woman from Proverbs 31, it also shows us the natural progression of growing in grace. Macias's compassion and humor make this a must read. See our review.

For a funny look at life, aging, motherhood and world events, look no further than When Life Stinks, It's Time to Wash the Gym Socks by Kelly Epperson. You can go here to check out the review.

For the mystery loving mom, consider The Devil Can Wait by Marta Stephens, the second book in her Sam Harper crime series--which we reviewed here or Kindred Spirits by Marilyn Meredith. You can find our review of Kindred Spirits here.

Moms who enjoy historical fiction might like Shades of Gray by Jessica James. This novel filled with complex characters and an intriguing plot was our choice for favorite book read in 2008 in the fiction category. You can the review here.

Also recommended are, The Lost Diary of Don Juan, A Novel by Douglas Carlton Abrams--which we reviewed here, Faith and Honor by Robin Maderich, whose review can be found here, and Copper Fire by Suzanne Woods Fisher. You'll find that review here.

What mom doesn't enjoy a bit of romance? For inspirational romance fans, you might pick up a copy of Ten Thousand Charms by Allison Pittman.

This book--which we reviewed here-is the first book in Pittman's Crossroads of Grace series. Quills & Promises by Amber Miller would be another great selection. Read our review here.

If Mom likes her romance on the spicy side, great books to pick up would be Woman on Top and Woman in Charge by Sherry James. These are both books in her Studs for Hire series.
You can find out more about the these books here and here.

Show Mom how much you love her. Add a book to her home library today!

How Can I Run a Tight Ship When I'm Surrounded By Loose Cannons? by Kathi Macias--Book Review

Have you struggled to live up to the expectations of the good woman described in Proverbs 31? You're certainly not alone. That's why every Christian woman who desires to follow the example of the good woman must read How Can I Run a Tight Ship When I'm Surrounded By Loose Cannons? - Proverbs 31 Discoveries for Yielding to the Master of the Seas by Kathi Macias.

Follow Kathi's journey and struggle with Proverbs 31 as she discusses the natural progression of growing in grace. From our Christian infancy, through our toddling years, learning to run, and then finally knowing the comfort and peace of being back on our knees and totally dependent upon and surrendered to God, and knowing He will bring us safely home; Kathi shares her personal stories with humor and genuine compassion for her fellow Christians.

I willingly admit that I love Kathi's work. When I read Beyond Me: Living a You-First Life in a Me-First World--which I reviewed here--I knew I would be a fan of Kathi Macias for life. And when I heard that she had a new book coming out, I didn't waste any time in letting Kathi know that I wanted to review it.

While very different in tone and style than Beyond Me, Kathi has perfectly captured the many struggles Christian women deal with when they consider and try to follow the example of the good woman from Proverbs 31; how overwhelming it can be and how often we try to take control when God is truly steering the ship. By choosing to tell this story in a funny and lighthearted way, the reader is eager to journey along with Kathi to see what she learned next and how to apply it to her own life.

At the end of most of the chapters is a section called "Making it Personal", which asks the reader questions that relate to the point Kathi has just discussed. She had something similiar in Beyond Me; but while I found them to very helpful in Beyond Me, they were distracting to me in this book because I wanted to keep going with this funny and lighthearted story that was subtlety teaching me what I needed to know. I ended up skipping them until I completed the book and then went back to review them once I was done.

Also included at the end of most chapters were Bible verses that referred back to the lesson, including one of my favorites: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."--Philippians 4:13.

The cover art for this book is wonderful. The side of a ship with a woman--who could be any Christian woman--looking out through the porthole--is a brilliant idea. The humorous Foreward is provided by Martha Bolton, Emmy-nominated songwriter and author of Didn't My Skin Used to Fit and Cooking With Hot Flashes, and a touching Afterword is written by Rhonda Rhea, author of High Heels in High Places, Purse-suit of Holiness, and Whatever Blings Are Lovely.

One last thing that truly made this a special book is the chapter that Kathi dedicates to her father, Hans. The reader finds a tribute to a beloved father from the daughter who prayed for him to accept Christ as his Savior; and who in his final moments, as he sang a song from his childhood, taught her so much about "resting and trusting in God's goodness for His children." Even as I type this, I can feel the tightening in my throat and the tears swimming in my eyes.

How Can I Run A Tight Ship When I'm Surrounded By Loose Cannons? will make the perfect Mother's Day or birthday gift for the Christian woman in your life. For every Christian woman who has aspired to be the Proverbs 31 good woman, Kathi Macias has brought hope.

Messiah Interviews by Jerry Pollock--Book Review

A unique idea mixed with science and the Hebrew Bible comes alive in Messiah Interviews: Belonging to God by Jerry Pollock.

Brothers Yinnon and Yoseph are twins. Like most twins, they are close and know everything about each other. But at some point Yoseph realizes that Yinnon is depressed, distressed, and bi-polar. And what he discovers next about Yinnon will change his life...forever.

Transported to heaven, Yoseph is interviewed by a variety of biblical figures--the angel Gabriel, Methuselah, Chanoch, Seth, King David, Moses, Jacob, Abraham, and the prophet Isaiah--to see if he has what it takes to be the Messiah. The interviews are difficult and Yoseph is tested and tricked at every turn. But his passion for this is strong and he knows he must continue on despite everything.

Messiah Interviews is an interesting mix of fact and fiction. Science and biblical history are woven together with a healthy dose of make believe to create a world where Yoseph has the opportunity to vie for the job of Messiah...but only if he makes it through the interviews.

Not knowing a great deal about the Hebrew Bible, this book provides great insight for the reader, but at times I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information. The same held true for the scientific aspects of the book.

Some of the best portions of Messiah Interviews come from when Yoseph is between interviews and gets a chance to spend time with his wife, Marica. Pollock's vivid details during these encounters are well done. The reader immediately feels transported to the time and place with them.

The ending is superbly done and made it well worth the reading of the book. Readers interested in the implications of biblical history on the modern world, finding truth and sincerity in one's heart, and those seeking further knowledge of the Hebrew Bible will certainly enjoy this one.

Amanda Ford and Kiss Me, I'm Single: An Ode to the Solo Life

How often do you know me to give up the floor twice in one week? Oh my, am I going to spin the Earth of its axis? Amanda Ford is the author of Kiss Me, I'm Single: An Ode to the Solo Life. She's going to share with us her thoughts on love and the lack of guarantees.

Love has no guarantees. I have known this forever. It's a lesson I learned in the womb. It's embryonic understanding. At least that's what I call it. This is the only way I know to describe just how fundamental that statement feels to me. Eat. Breath. Shit. Love has no guarantees. Embryonic understanding.

Sometimes I think I was destined to write a book about being single. If I wasn't destined, then I was certainly shaped, influenced and guided toward the topic since before birth. Just as an unborn child receives nutrients from his mother to build cells, tissues, organs and bones, I imagine that child also absorbs feelings from his mother to construct his emotional landscape.

When my mother was twenty-five, she married her college sweetheart. When he and my mother were twenty-nine, her husband died unexpectedly of a heart attack. His name was Jack. He died before I was born, so I never knew what it felt like to sit next to him on the couch, to watch him cut his steak with a knife and fork, to talk to him about sports or books or the Saturday crossword.

So perhaps you might think it odd when I tell you that I do know intimately, viscerally, what Jack's absence feels like. It feels anxious and sad and uncertain and wrong and hard. Why did Jack die? He was healthy. He was handsome. He was the perfect husband. He would have been the perfect father. It's unfair. I must be a failure. I must be unlovable. God must be punishing me.

You see, just as I inherited my mother's jetting cheekbones and her knotty knuckles, I have also inherited her deepest sorrow, her biggest loss. I inherited the first hand understanding that love offers no guarantees.

My mother married my father in a fog of widowhood. He was a philanderer, and before I was even a year old, she kicked him out of the house. When I was four, my mother fell in love with a man who moved in with us a year later. He loved me like his own. When I was fourteen, this man died of cancer.

When I was eighteen I went away to the same college my mom attended, the same college where she met Jack. I fell in love at that college when I was nineteen. When I was twenty-two, my sweetheart and I married. When I was twenty-four, we filed for divorce.

Perhaps I have inherited my mother's inability to make love conform to conventional standards and follow society's expectations. Love can die even as you swear to hold on for eternity. Love has its own destiny. It gives no guarantees. I know this.

But just as I have inherited my mother's jetting cheekbones, I have also inherited her unyielding conviction that just because love does not go as we expect it, does not mean it has deserted us completely. Just as I have inherited the pain of my mother's biggest losses, I have also inherited her optimism and ability to see love around every bend, even if it doesn't come the expected package. My mother has watched many of her loves die—both literally and figuratively—but she has not let these losses kill her spirit. She is an unyielding romantic. She is creative. She is giving. She loves her work. She watches birds. She taught herself to paint. She places personal ads. She goes on dates. She visits the market. She cooks. She bikes. She laughs. She smiles. She wakes up in the morning. She calls me on the phone. She says, "Oh my sweet daughter! Isn't it a wonderful day? It's a wonderful day. I love this day. You are so sweet. I love you." She loves me. She loves this day. She loves this life. Every ounce of it.

Like my mom, I have watched love crumble before my eyes. I have a failed marriage, many failed relationships, and no father to run to for advice. But I haven't let it bitter me. I keep my spirit sweet. My heart gets broken, I open it wider. I flirt. I play. I dance. I pray. I bike. I breathe. I give thanks for it all. I know that if we are able to take what we have inherited and transform those broken pieces into a masterpiece, then we are truly miracles. I know that love has nothing to do with the circumstances of my past, but that I can remake it anew every day. I know that love has nothing to do with another person, but that love is the condition of my own heart.
