Audible Book Review: Next Is Now by Leigh Brown

We know her. We love her. And Leigh Brown is back with the book that has been on her heart for a while, Next Is Now: How to Move Forward When Disruption, Doubt, and Discomfort Hit All at Once

If you're living a life that appears successful but isn't filling your cup, Next Is Now should be your next purchase. This is a book about getting real with yourself and embracing your calling. It's a book about learning what is in your way and why you can't move forward, shutting off the outside voices, building trust, and embracing what you feel called to do--even if it doesn't make sense to everyone else.

I've been privileged to know Leigh for years, and while we are separated by the miles, every time I take one of her classes or read one of her books, I feel like she understands right where I am and comes to me with bold advice I can immediately put into practice. She's not afraid to tell her story and use it as a way to lift up others. While I knew some of the stories that unfolded, I learned more about what she went through and respected her even more through the humble way she gave of herself in this book. You cannot listen to Leigh and walk away without pearls of wisdom. She is a woman of character, a woman of faith, and a person who can motivate you to uncover your purpose despite the disruption, doubt, and discomfort that tries to interfere.

Highly recommended!

Visit Glenyce online at www.glenyce.net.

How did you get into this collection of inspiration with folks like Jack Canfield?

I was in the process of writing a Messenger Mini Book when I was invited to submit a chapter for the Pearls of Wisdom book. I was thrilled when it was one of the chapters to be accepted.

What is your chapter about?

My chapter is my journey from choosing to feel like a victim to owning the fact that I had created a large amount of debt, and I was the only one who could change it.

What do you think makes this book unique and who would want to read it?

This book is unique because it offers many different ideas to live your best life now from many different perspectives. The readers will vary from those just starting on their path to creating happiness and joy in their lives to those who have been on the journey for many years. I love how easy a read it is also. You could easily read one chapter a day.

What kind of wisdom do you have to offer the reader?

My wisdom is my life experience. I inspire by how I live my life and the conscious choices I have made to get me where I am today, and where I am going tomorrow. Get clear on what you desire in your life, on what makes your heart dance and take the steps to get you there. It is amazing how quickly everything lines up for you, once you make the conscious decision to live your greatest dreams.

The publisher promises that the authors such as yourself are “up and coming” leaders in self-help. How does the publisher know this and what is your expertise in “self-help”?

I have been working full time in my business as a "medium & so much more" for 10 years. I teach various workshops, classes, teleclasses and online courses. My expertise is empowering people to live their best lives by making conscious choices.

Most people know about Jack Canfield from the Chicken Soup books and Marci Shimoff from her Happy book … How would you like your readers to think of you? What is your “signature niche”?

I empower people to recognize they are the creators of their lives through their thoughts, actions, choices. I facilitate them on how to use this to their advantage and create the lives beyond their wildest dreams.

We often hear that the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” – how does that proverb apply to the 30 authors in this book?

This book is an excellent way to connect with many different readers around the world. With so many different perspectives any reader could pick it up and find something that resonates with them.

What is your most central and compelling “pearl of wisdom”?

Choosing to own your power as the creator of your life through the choices you make is the most empowering thing you can do. Knowing you created something in your life also gives you the power to know you can change it. In fact you are the only one who can. You can receive inspiration from others, but you are the one who ultimately make the choices that change it, or keep it the same. The choice is yours.

Interview with Craig Meriwether, Contributor to Pearls of Wisdom

Where did you grow up?

I was raised in San Diego, CA, but I had a funny brain-twist when I first read the question. At first I thought you were asking “where was I when I woke up and decided to take back control of my life” (you know, like when someone’s acting like an idiot and you tell them to “grow up.”)

So to follow along down that brain-twist path I actually grew up a few years ago (mid-life crisis?) when I read a passage from Eat, Pray, Love where Elizabeth Gilbert writes, “Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings.” For some reason that passage hit me over the head really hard and woke me up.

It literally set me on a path to changing my life.

When did you begin writing?

I’ve always enjoyed writing but have been distracted by music for most of my life (both listening and playing) so I never put much time into it. I struggled with depression for a good part of my life and about 4 years ago I made a commitment to get rid of it. After I turned my life around I decided to write down what I had learned and how I went about creating happiness. So I created the Depression 180 Program with all the different scientifically proven methods for eliminating depression that I had researched and learned about. It started off just as a book but as it progressed it’s grown into a wonderful program that also includes audio, cognitive-behavioral exercises, hypnotherapy and interviews with leading experts.

How did you get into this collection of inspiration with folks like Jack Canfield?

The publishers had seen some of my writing and asked me to submit something for consideration. They liked it and were gracious enough to put it in the book.

What is your chapter about?

It’s about how you can use the problems and stress in your life to create massive positive change. How you can actually use the challenges in your life to transform yourself and grow emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

How would you like your readers to think of you?

I’d like to instill in people that it is possible to turn your life around and create deep happiness no matter where you are starting from. I would like to be a person who creates a spark and fans the flames so that people will be able to make massive change in their lives. I don’t offer quick fixes or magic fairy dust to create transformation but I want people to know that if they’re willing to commit, take action and have persistence then they will turn their lives around and live in deep happiness. So how would I’d like people to think of me: that I give hope.

What is your "signature niche"?

Showing people how to eliminate depression, anger and automatic negative thoughts.

What is your most central and compelling "pearl of wisdom"?

The idea that changed my life was this: the person you are now, the person who got you to where you are today, CANNOT be the person who takes you to where you want to be. Simple, and…well…fairly obvious really. But when I heard this, or more to the point, when I understood this, my life turned around and I started creating massive success in my life. When I understood how my emotional set point was sabotaging my success I was able to turn my life around.

The life you have today is due to the actions you took, or did not take, yesterday. And if you remain the same person, doing the same things, you will keep getting the same results. If you want something different tomorrow, you will have to become someone different today. Simple, but not so easy.

Where can readers purchase a copy?

Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and it will be in bookstores at the beginning of April.

What is up next for you?

I’m putting the finishing touches on The Depression 180 Program then I’ll be doing live trainings.

Is there anything you would like to add?

It’s my belief that happiness is your birthright but over the years, whether through chronic disappointments or heavy traumatic events, some of us lose sight of how to be happy. That’s what happened to me. We may catch some happiness here or there for short time but we end up settling back down into feeling numb or even despair.

People just want to feel good. 1 in 10 Americans are taking antidepressants. That means 30 million Americans alone are spending billions of dollars a year trying to create happiness. I’m not big on soaking your brain in pharmaceuticals and I don’t think there is a one-pill-solves-all approach to ending depression and creating happiness. It takes work and effort but the reward of a life lived in happiness and peace is so worth it. (To get the real story on what antidepressants can do to you I put up a real eye-opening free audio download at www.Depression180.com called Do Antidepressants Cause Depression, Violence and Suicide?)

People can turn their lives around. It does take commitment, effort and action but everyone can do it. If I could leave people with just one idea it would be this: remember that you are phenomenal…and act accordingly.

Visit her website at http://www.moximize.me/

Follow her on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/Moximize_Me and Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/moximize.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a mother of 4 grown children, a certified Self-love Coach and Master Motivator of Women in Transition. I have worn many hats in my half century – daughter, sister, wife, mother of 7 (4 of my own and 3 I borrowed to raise just for the heck of it), fund raiser, travel photographer, globe trotter, and now a certified self-love coach and author. I have even thrown in “radio host” just so that I don’t get too comfortable in my zone.

I am 51 years young and I love life. I have had some challenges on my journey but I am coming through them just fine. I am an adventurer and that helps me stay focused in the present trudging forward in this enchanted forest of life.

My sense of humor has opened many doors to me and has helped me write a finishing chapter to each different story in my life. I really try to look at life with a spring in my step and a good laugh at each turn. Even through the tears I try to ring the humor bell and lighten things up a notch. Writing has been my greatest passion as I can finally be heard. I have been writing children’s stories since I became a mom but never had the courage to publish them. So they remained the bedtime stories for my children. Now my mission is to help inspire women to never give up no matter how challenging their life’s path has become.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in British Columbia. I reside in one of Canada’s many pearls – Vancouver on the west coast of our great Nation. I have had the luxury of being born to American parents and raised in the cultural backgrounds of both wonderful countries. My heritage is dug in deep with ties from Russia, United States and Canada.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

With a rich heritage in both Canada and the United Sates traditions – there was a lot of turkey eaten in our household with two Thanksgivings AND Christmas within 3 months of each other every year as I grew up. One US Thanksgiving has the most zing story. My relatives came up from Seattle to spend the holiday with us. They decided they wanted a fresh Turkey for the dinner so they smuggled a live turkey across the border and brought it to our house. When the Turkey gobbled from within the trunk and the custom’s officer asked what that noise was, my uncle stated that is daughter was practicing for a school play ad her part was of a turkey. I guess the customs agent bought the story because they all arrived for the weekend along with the turkey. Once the turkey was named – Matilda – we couldn’t kill it for dinner. So what were we to do with a pet turkey? Luckily we had friends that had farm. We asked them if they would adopt Matilda and they had no problem doing so with strict stipulation that she would not become Christmas dinner. Our friends raced racehorses. Matilda fell in love with one of their prized racers. She would ride his back while he rotted around the training ring to cool down after training. When the horse went on tour to race, Matilda would lose all her feathers with homesickness. Finally after an extended tour Matilda died of a broken heart.

With stories like these I my life, can you see why I became a writer?

When did you begin writing?

I have written all my life. I was raised in a strict household of the doctrine – to be seen and not heard. So I wrote to my imaginary friends and told them what I wanted to say but never allowed to express. Then as I got older and raised a large family of my own I encouraged my kids to tell all and with those wonderful stories I wrote children’s books. Then I became a travel photographer and created beautiful children’s picture books. But I never had the self-confidence to get them published so they sit on old floppies.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I write in my living room with my laptop looking out my picture window of the busy city harbor in front of me. I watch the ferries travel to and from the mainland and imagine what challenges and transitions the passengers are facing in their lives at that moment. Life continues around me and inspires me to find creative things to write about.

What is this book about?

Fabulously Fifty and Reflecting It! – Discovering My Lovable me” is my story, a story of a woman who has discovered how through my reflections, the truly fabulously lovable me; the authentic me that I was born to be. I have moxie like the trail blazing women of the 20’s.

This book is the result of hard work and perseverance on a self-love journey. It is the reflection of my life and from these reflections I have created a workbook for the reader to assist her on her own journey to find the most authentic loveable you. I am the reader’s voice. I speak as her. I have been where she has travelled. I have finished licking my wounds and jumped back into the ring. I am MOXIMIZED!

My reflections shared are not to place blame on anyone in my path, for I take responsibility for my reactions to every challenge I have come across in my life. I just want the reader to understand that I have walked in their shoes and have never given up. I encourage the reader to understand that she can restart her life at any time she wants to and still find success in whatever she desires.

What inspired you to write it?

I found myself having to start life all over again at 50. My 2nd marriage crumbled under the weight of my husband’s addictions to alcohol and prescription drugs and I had to leave that life behind to save my soul. It was a difficult and scary decision to make but I new I had no other choice. With therapy and coaching I realized my level of self-love and then my self worth was only measured by me not the measuring rod of others. I took my essays that I had written as part of me healing process and created a workbook with the hopes that the experiences /I have faced head on will help other women hurdle their challenges and see the amazing light that is at the end of every tunnel.

Who is your favorite author?

Erma Bombeck – she taught me to take life as it is and not so serious. Laugh at myself and enjoy life’s roller coaster after all it is just a ride and every twist and turn is there for us to learn from.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

With the increasing ease to get published today, every budding author has something of value to share with the world and the world is open and waiting to embrace your gift. So just do it! Publish your works and share your expertise no matter what it is with the world. Eventually this planet and its people will be a better place for doing so – one book at a time.

What is up next for you?

I have many different spoons stirring my creative soup bowl. We’ll just have to see which one comes out first.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Write from your heart and soul a follow the “bar stool test” -write, as you would tell your story to the person who is sitting next to you at the bar. Not to worry about the formalities of correct writing – just write the streams of thoughts that flow from your inner being, it can all be tweaked into a more formal way later if so desired. When you write to pass the barstool test you reach the masses and you relate better to the niche you are destined to write for.

Thank you for your time.

Book Review: The Cause Within You by Matthew Barnett with George Barna

What if you could find the one thing in the world you were created to do? The Cause within You: Finding the One Great Thing You Were Created to Do in This World will help you get started.

Matthew Barnett was only twenty years old when he arrived in LA with his father, Pastor Tommy Barnett, to bring spiritual health to the declining Bethel Temple. Little did he know that this would be "the cause" that God had for him.

In this moving inspirational story, Barnett shows others through his own experiences as co founder of the Dream Center in LA, that God has a cause for their lives and shows them how to figure out what that cause is. From how to discover what God has created you to do, to motivation on how to keep you working toward fulfilling that cause, The Cause Within You has the power to change lives.

What I enjoyed most about this book is that it reminds the reader while we may have a cause we are passionate about, it must also be the cause that God has called us to. It reminds us to seek His will and not our own. As a Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible School director, I truly appreciate Barnett's gentle reminders, as much as I am empowered by the message that fills this book. It is too easy to get so focused on your own vision that you forget God's vision is what is most important.

With tons of encouragement along the way, The Cause Within You will get you moving toward discovering what you were created to do and keep you focused on God's vision for your life. I highly recommend it.

Books, Products and More!: Book Spotlight and Giveaway

Visit our other blog at Books, Products and More! to read about a giveaway for a copy of the motivational anthology, Life Choices: Pursuing Your Passion by Judi Moreo and friends. Deadline to enter is 11:59 PM Eastern on Sunday, April 17th.

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Author Interview: Jeff Civillico, Contributing Author for Judi Moreo’s Life Choices: Pursuing Your Passion

Today's special guest is Jeff Civillico, contributing author for Judi Moreo’s Life Choices: Pursuing Your Passion. We'll talk to Jeff about his writing, his contribution to this collection, and what the future holds.

Welcome to The Book Connection, Jeff. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I market and perform a one-man physical comedy show called “Comedy in Action.” I perform at corporate events, colleges, and in several shows on the Las Vegas Strip.

When did you begin writing?
I have been taking little notes in a document on my laptop called “The Book” since college, not knowing exactly how it would all fit together. I began work in earnest on this chapter for Life Choices in the Fall of 2010.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?
I find I am most productive in the morning when the rest of the world is sleeping, before the craziness of the day begins. When I can’t write in the morning, I write whenever I can squeeze a few moments in-– often I find that’s on planes, trains, and automobiles!

What is this book about?

This book is about inspiring people to live a life of passion. It profiles many people across many industries who have found careers that fuel them at their deepest level.
What inspired you to write the book?

I returned to my Georgetown University Homecoming to find that many of my classmates were unsatisfied in their professional lives. My career as a performer was all the buzz - ”You’re so LUCKY to be able to do what you love.” Lucky? Additional conversation revealed that although everyone agreed it was theoretically possible to imagine an enterprise based on your life’s passion, to most the undertaking seemed unrealistic and impractical. I saw a gap between knowing one’s true passion and defining its subsequent branding, marketing, and monetizing. I wrote this book to help bridge that gap.
Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

Amazon.com, all major book stores, www.lifechoicesbook.com and of course, my website www.jeffonstage.com.

What is up next for you?
I am in the process of forming a non-profit called “Win-Win Entertainment” to match professional entertainers willing to donate time and talent with eligible, approved charities nationwide. For more information, please visit http://win-winentertainment.org.

Thanks for spending time with us, Jeff. We wish you continued success.
