Book Review: The Greatest Salesman in the World, Part 2: The End of the Story by Og Mandino

Here is the end of the story for Hafid, the man who was known to all as "the great salesman."

Successful businessman Hafid, now retired, has isolated himself from the world after the death of his wife, with only his friend Erasmus for companionship. However, a meeting with a stranger encourages him to embark upon a new career. Unsure of his success in the new career, Hafid connects with his past, which changes his life forever.

The Greatest Salesman in the World, Part 2: The End of the Story by Og Mandino brings the reader through the rest of Hafid's story. Though it has been decades since I read the first book, it was like seeing an old friend again. As this story unfolded, I could remember the first book so well. It also features the vows of success that became so popular with the first book. If you think of the importance of repeating daily affirmations, then reading The Greatest Salesman in the World and The Greatest Salesman in the World, Part 2: The End of the Story one after the other, will be helpful.

What I have always loved about Mandino's books is how he packs such a powerful message into so few pages. He focuses on reaching the reader, not in displaying his writing talents...though they are many. This is a moving, life-changing story. I came to expect nothing less from him while he was alive. His legacy lives on, and the messages he shares are just important today as they were when first written. That's why I share his books with my leadership team.

Top 5 Tuesday - Top 5...Books to Inspire/Motivate

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme that explores different topics. Originally created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, it is now hosted by Meeghan at Meeghan Reads. For a list of December topics you can click here. To participate, link your post back to the weekly post.

This week is a Top 5 Tuesday freebie. I didn't even know there was such a thing. Since we are heading into the new year, I figured I would share books to inspire/motivate you. It is the time for goal setting and resolutions. :)

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.

This book gives you those secrets!

Believe you can succeed and you will:

-Cure yourself of the fear of failure

-Make your attitudes your allies
-Learn how to think positively
-Turn defeat into victory
-Use goals to help you grow
-Think like a leader

One of the best books I've ever read. Love every book by Og Mandino.

The Greatest Salesman in the World is a book that serves as a guide to a philosophy of salesmanship, and success, telling the story of Hafid, a poor camel boy who achieves a life of abundance. If Mandino's suggested reading structure is followed, it would take about 10 months to read the book.

What you are today is not important... for in this runaway bestseller you will learn how to change your life by applying the secrets you are about to discover in the ancient scrolls.

For out-starting upstarts of all ages, here is a wonderfully wise and blessedly brief graduation speech from the one and only Dr. Seuss. In his inimitable, humorous verse and pictures, he addresses the Great Balancing Act (life itself, and the ups and downs it presents) while encouraging us to find the success that lies within us.

 And will you succeed?
Yes! You will indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)

A modern classic, Oh, the Places You'll Go! was first published one year before Dr. Seuss's death at the age of eighty-seven. In a mere fifty-six pages, Dr, Seuss managed to impart a lifetime of wisdom. It is the perfect send-off for children starting out in the maze of life, be they nursery school grads or newly-minted PhD's. Everyone will find it inspired good fun.

I included that last one because we should all tap into that young person inside us who dreamed big and believed we were invincible.

Book Review: Timeless Tales by John Alexander

In this beautiful poetry collection, author John Alexander will touch your heart and brighten your day. These Timeless Tales will remind you of the freedom of childhood, of the lifting of burdens when we step out in faith, of the blessings of life, of favorite holiday memories and more.

What a wonderful collection of poems this is. The inside is just as lovely as in the outside cover art. There is peace and comfort and warmth found within the pages of Timeless Tales. One of my favorites is "Donkey Tale," which is the tale of a lonely, awkward donkey who is made fun of by others until he meets a man who lifts his burdens. The man ends up riding on his back into the city where palms are laid at their feet. "The Grand's Christmas" is another sweet poem about grandparents spending their holiday together, but without their family, and how the Bible brings them comfort. There are several Scripture passages within this collection's pages as well.

I'm so glad I sat down to read Timeless Tales. It's a definite treasure.

Book Review: When SHMACK Happens by Amber Neben

All of us face obstacles in life. Let When SHMACK Happens by Amber Neben equip and encourage you during life's toughest moments.

Neben is an international decorated cycling champion with victories in 11 countries and multiple UCI Category 1 stage race wins to her credit. When SHMACK Happens chronicles the role faith has played in her life as she has met challenges on and off the bike. From unexpected medical issues to equipment failure to major crashes, follow Neben's journey to succeed by placing her life in the hands of God.

I'll be the first to admit sports autobiographies don't usually capture my attention. But this isn't your typical sports autobiography. While you might find stories from athletes that thank God in the opening or closing pages of the book, Neben's entire focus is how her faith has provided hope and peace despite the numerous setbacks she has faced. She gives credit to placing her life in God's hands for the successes she has achieved. Neben is a 2x Olympian, 2x World Champion, 2x Pan American Champion and 2x National. A list of her Race Wins is included in the final pages of the book. Each chapter is headlined by applicable verses from Scripture and the reader is treated to numerous black and white photographs.

When SHMACK Happens is a powerful book that will inspire you to trust in the Lord for all things, no matter what comes your way.

Interview with Jay Roberts, Author of Break the Chains

Jay D Roberts MD is a board-certified physiatrist, specializing in the treatment of physical disabilities with a focus of adding quality to life. He is currently in private practice in California. He is a member and lecturer at national and international conferences related to his specialty, a contributing author to Current Trends in Physiatry, and author of various scientific papers. In addition to his career, Dr. Roberts volunteers as part of a Christian ministry in maximum security prisons. He and his wife, parents of two grown sons, live in Indian Wells, California. Break the Chains is Dr. Roberts’ first book. Following in the long tradition of doctors who combine their passion for saving lives with their passion for writing, Dr. Roberts is currently at work on a novel, concerning children forced to work in mines.

BOOK SUMMARY:
If you were abused over and over again, would you become an abuser? Or would you learn to forgive? Dr. Jay Roberts had to go to prison to learn the answer.

In 1999 Dr. Roberts was in at-home hospice care preparing for his own death from a neurological disease. At the point where he finally gave up, he experienced a spontaneous, overnight healing. It was not the first time he had “cheated” death. He had survived a fifty-foot fall from a cliff, a plane crash, and attempts on his life by rebel insurgents in remote areas in the Philippines in 1970s. This near-death escape was different though, because it was the culmination of a turbulent lifelong dialogue with God which started when he was a child being bull-whipped by his alcoholic father. Yet even after his complete recovery from disease, it would take a maximum security prison environment to reveal to him the mysterious power of forgiveness.

In the telling of his fascinating story—of extreme abuse, of the compulsion to become a pain and wound care specialist, of medical school in a third world country against a dangerous political backdrop, and of his return home to deal with the demons he’d left behind—Dr. Roberts tackles the big questions illuminating physical, mental, and spiritual growth. Break the Chains affirms faith in both God and the human spirit. It is as revealing and inspirational as it is truthful and poignant.

Q: What compelled you to write Break the Chains?

A:  After I was healed in 1999, I had a deep desire, passion to write, despite my head telling me not to. I ignored the feeling for a few years, but I could not extinguish the burning flame to write my story. Buddy, who you will meet in my story, kept telling me that I must write, to trust him, that everything would be okay even if I told of my past.

Q: How was it for you, looking back into the past?

A:  Difficult and painful. First, I had to mentally agree to disclose my family secret. Second, I had to write it down, uncovering the past that I had buried for years. Then, I had to let it out of my hands and into the public.

Q: In 1999, you were preparing for your own death due to a neurological disease, then you experienced a spontaneous healing. Tell us what happened.

A:  I was at my lowest point. Tired of fighting God. Tired of self-pity. Tired of being in control. At that moment I surrendered to Christ, and died to myself. I saw a vision and awoke healed.

Q: In what way does Break the Chains tackle the big questions illuminating physical, mental, and spiritual growth?

A:  Throughout the book I show my physical, mental and spiritual struggles and how I was able to overcome horrendous obstacles, transform my shame to forgiveness, and heal.

Q: Did you research or study the craft of memoir writing before starting your book?

A:  Yes. I read books on the craft of writing and attended several workshops. For me, it was necessary. My first attempt at writing, before my studies, read like a medical report void of any feeling. It was awful!

Q: While writing this memoir, did you sometimes feel as though you were being manipulated from afar?

A:   From afar, if you mean spiritually, YES. But not manipulated, more guided.

Q: What has been the most positive aspect of writing this book?

A:  After reading my book my mother called and asked me to forgive her for not protecting me as a child!

Q: Is there any point during the writing of your memoir that you thought you couldn’t go on?

A:  Yes. For two years I did not write. It was too painful to put down my shame.

Q: What’s the happiest moment you’ve lived as a writer?

A:  When I held my bound book for the first time. I shivered. My hairs on my arms stood up! I felt like a father looking at his precious little one. I might add I had a temporary fear of letting my baby out into the world!

Q: Will you be writing another book in the near future?

A:  I am currently finishing my first novel, Tin Kids, about the abuse of kids in tin mines. It is a medical, political thriller. I am very pleased with it. Can’t wait to send this baby out into the world!!

Q: Ray Bradbury once said, “You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.” Do you agree?

A:  Well, you must for sure keep writing, and believe in yourself. I prefer to be in a “Spiritual High” to keep my writing flame from being extinguished during times of doubt, frustration, re-writes, and rejections.

Q: Leave my readers with some words of wisdom.

A:   Never stop writing. Never take “no” for an answer. I was rejected- by many editors, publishers, and agents. I was even told to my face, “Even if you can write, which you can’t because you’re a doctor, and, anyway, no one will ever buy your book because you’re a nobody.” Believe in yourself. You are somebody!

Interview: Hermina Krista Pettiford, Author of Surrendered Balance

Joining us today is Hermina Krista Pettiford, author of Surrendered Balance Daily Living for the Modern Christian Woman. She is the women’s ministry leader in her local church – New Covenant Tabernacle located San Diego, CA where she lives with her family. She has a B. A. in Biblical Studies from Southern California Seminary.

Welcome to The Book Connection, Hermina. We are thrilled to have you with us.
What is your fondest childhood memory?

I have many but one that stands out is my first trip to Disneyland. We have a large family. There were nine of us growing up, six girls and three boys. I am the youngest girl. We all took a train ride from San Diego to Orange County where Disneyland is located - dad, mom, and all of us. It was great. I remember the train ride more than being at Disneyland. It was wonderful looking at all the beautiful scenery as we went by. I love trains.

When did you begin writing?
I began writing after I became and adult, about the age of 21. It was like therapy to write what I was feeling. After I became a Christian I really began to write, this is how I pour out my heart to God and how I make a record of personal promises for Him and prayer requests to Him. Reading was my first love. I began to really enjoy reading at about the age of ten after I read The Diary of Anne Frank. It was a real story about a real person that ended in a real tragedy. This touched me in a way that caused me to love reading. After becoming a Christian I found myself writing more than I read.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I write when I can sneak a few moments. I’m always busy.
What is this book about?

The book is about balancing life for busy women, however, I’ve come to realize that this is a universal message. Men and children need it too. So many people have reached out and asked me to write a version of Surrendered Balance for everyone. People are balancing so much these days - home, work /career, staying fit, ministry, friendships, family, and our most important our relationship with God, and time for ourselves, all of this with the distractions of the modern world today. Surrendered Balance was written to give new insight and new strategies for fitting everything in without getting overwhelmed by anything. The things I discuss are not new; they are the basic principles of living a balanced life shared in a simple way. The strategies I share to fit all these valuable things into our lives without getting lost in the maze of modern life are, I believe, written with a fresh perspective.
Who is your biggest supporter?

My children are my biggest supporters.

Are you a member of a critique group? If no, who provides feedback on your work?

I am a member of the San Diego Christian Writers Guild and they have critique groups. Unfortunately I don’t get a chance to attend them as often as I’d like to so I asks friends and use a professional editor to look at my work.
Who is your favorite author?

I love the Bible, but other than that Francine Rivers.
Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

I don’t have an agent but I’m open to the possibility.
Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

It was interesting and educational. I self-published, opening my own small publishing house. I had everything done by professionals within the industry. I handled the business side of things including copyrights, Library of Congress, ISBN, finding a printer and a distributor, as well as setting a price for the book for wholesale and resale, marketing, and negotiating with bookstores to carry the book.
If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

Yes, I would have priced the book differently. I love the business of books.
Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

Surrendered Balance can be purchased at www.barnesandnoble.com, www.amazon.com, and at local Barnes and Noble stores, and also at my website – www.surrendreddbalance.com.
Do you have a website and/or blog where readers can find out more?

I have a blog – www.surrenderedbalance.com , where I write a weekly devotional. People can sign up to get them via email also. They can also get information on my scheduled events and book signings.
Do you have a video trailer to promote your book? If yes, where can readers find it?

Yes, it’s on YouTube, I was interview by Tracey Allen. It’s wonderful interview
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDA9z_9vY6g&feature=related

What is the best investment you have made in promoting your book?

Pump Up Your Book because it is doing a lot more for a lot less. The links and the articles can always be referred back to and re-promoted.
What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Write the book before you take the journey of trying to get published. Also, for self publishers have a professional edit done, you’ll be glad you did and a professional cover. Interior book design for consistency of page layout is just as important.
What is up next for you?

Next for me is more books - a devotional and a Surrendered Balance series. But above all that I am planning on transition into fulltime ministry. There is no greater joy for me than sharing the Gospel of the Kingdome of God, all are welcome!
Is there anything you would like to add?

My prayer and desire for Surrendered Balance and any other book that I will every write is that it will be more than just another good story; I hope it will help people achieve goals and solve problems. I designed the book to be an action tool that will not only give the reader good ideas but equip each person with a plan and a way to carry out that plan.

Thanks for spending time with us today, Hermina. We wish you great success.

Book Review: Daily Guideposts 2011, 35th Anniversary Edition (Giveaway)

This beautiful hardcover is one devotional that will be on many wish lists this holiday season.

Daily Guideposts 2011 is the 35th Anniversary Edition of this daily devotional from Guideposts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ministering to and inspiring people around the world.

This year's theme is "Growing in Love." With over 50 writers contributing to this daily devotional, the stories are as diverse as those who penned them, but the overall theme shines through each one.

Within this beautiful collection of stories, Bible verses, and prayers, are special features sprinkled throughout. One of my favorites appears on page 117 for Tuesday, April 12th. Pam Kidd is a pastor's wife. In her special feature titled, "To Say Good-bye", which appears during the middle of each month, she learns how to say good-bye to the people and places she has grown to love. April's lesson is on forgiveness. In the last paragraph she says, "To forgive another is one of the nicest gifts you can ever give yourself."

What a touching way to look at forgiveness. Perhaps it will come a bit easier when we think of it this way.

Daily Guideposts 2011 is a beautiful book that I look forward to reading every night before turning out the light. It would make a lovely gift for you or someone you love.

A Friend in the Storm by Cheryl Ricker -- Book Review

An elegant, beautiful book of poetry, scripture, and quotes to inspire hope during times of great need can be found in A Friend in the Storm by Cheryl Ricker.

The uniqueness of this lovely book is that the words are spoken as if coming from Christ to help a reader facing life's difficulties. Each two-page section begins with a poem, followed by a quote, and then a portion of scripture.

I tend to read books such as these when I'm dealing with my daily struggles, and though things have eased up tremendously in the past few days, when I read A Friend in the Storm, I was in the midst of another battle that left me frustrated, angry, and feeling like a failure.

I wanted to remember which portion of the book touched me so deeply, so I used the attached light green ribbon bookmark to set my place at "Your Advocate", which talks about being judged. In this poem, Christ says,

"Don't worry when they judge you;
Only I can judge a heart.
As the Christ who crossed each crisis,
I will barricade each dart."

There is an additional stanza, but this is what I focused on right away, along with the scripture message from Isaiah 66:13 about comfort.

I read A Friend in the Storm in one sitting and knew it would find a special place on my shelf next to my Bibles, as I plan to read it often.

Ricker has put together a wonderful, inspiring book that makes the perfect gift for anyone who is struggling through the depths of loss and despair. Its small size (5.8 x 5.7 x 0.5 inches) allows you to tuck it into a bag so it can be brought anywhere, and the stunning cover and interior artwork will have you searching out a place in your home to display it for others to pick up and be touched by its soothing words.

You'll feel blessed by reading A Friend in the Storm by Cheryl Ricker.

Collaborating with a Family Member by Anne Vincent

Today's guest blogger is Anne Vincent, co-author of The Way to Stillness.

Gayle and her daughter, Anne, share Gayle's unique approach to connecting with others at a deep level, offering a practical guide that anyone might use as a manual on their spiritual journey.

As she approaches her 90th year, Gayle Alexander, looks back over a career of service as a master counselor, gifted teacher, and minister. She was blessed to be mentored by some of the great souls of our time, Viktor Frankl and Norman Cousins as was her late husband by Mother Theresa.

She shares the Love Motif, her unique approach to connecting with others at a deep level, offering a practical guide that anyone might use as a manual on their spiritual journey.

Full of rich insight and profound and inspiring life lessons gleaned from 50 years of private practice, being a “companion on the way” to thousands of individuals, she offers powerful tools to a new generation of helpers. It is her hope that educators, clergy members, physicians, clinicians, therapists, counselors, and anyone involved in the mentoring process find their own Way to Stillness and pass it on.

I asked Anne to discuss what it was like collaborating with her mother on this book. Here's what she had to say:

People have often told me that the most difficult speech to write is the shortest one, that your toughest audience is the smallest one. I believe both of these to be true. And I also believe that the most worthwhile things in life may indeed take a very long time to develop.

Our project began in 1996 at the encouragement of our practice clients and at the request of the Spiritual Journeys Class (a program my mother started 27 years ago) at First Presbyterian Church, Nashville, TN.

I have boxes of drafts, dozens of hours of tape recordings, and binders of ideas for chapter titles and illustrations. Did all of these elements become incorporated into the final form of The Way to Stillness? Certainly not – many dropped away like old winter coats. Over the past 14 years, a journey through deaths, divorce, illnesses, and the onset of Gayle’s vascular dementia provided numerous opportunities to give up our writing.

However, even through the dark days of her progressive illness and deterioration of her short term memory, “The Book” (as Gayle likes to call it) remained her Light. My mother and I are extremely different in many ways which made the building of a counseling practice together since 1989 quite challenging. One day, she quietly whispered in my ear, “Honey, I really do realize I am difficult to work with at times.”

Our common goal and vision to feed as many souls as possible with the truth of our experience has always triumphed over our differences. My years of intensive communication with Gayle served us both well in the process. She often struggled to articulate a misplaced word or phrase slipping just outside her mental grasp as her always brilliant brain began to fail her. I could usually supply it for her.

Even in the sadness, frustration, and anger of the dawning reality of her disability, my constant question to her has been: “ Mom, how will it feel for you to be an author by the age of 90?” Always a grin spread across her beautiful face.

With so many setbacks, it often seemed we were so “behind” in this process – that we were not going to beat the clock – that we might not make it. At the time of this post, I’m pleased to say that we are 3 years ahead of schedule (she’s 87). Don’t you think this brings a smile to her face?

Anne Alexander Vincent, Ordained Minister of Pastoral Counseling, is the Owner of Cottage in the Woods, a licensed ministry center of the National Christian Counselors Association. She is completing her PhD in Clinical Christian Counseling through the NCCA. With more than 30 years of counseling experience, she has completed her 8th year of intensive training under Dr Patrick Carnes, PhD as a Certified Multiple Addictions Therapist and Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist and with the International Trauma and Addiction Professionals as a Trauma and Addictions Therapist.

A large percentage of Anne’s clinical practice serves professional and executive counselees experiencing issues in the workplace as well as those professionals recovering from impairment by chemical and/or process addictions. She has provided aftercare counseling and services for the Tennessee Medical Foundation, the Tennessee Dental Association, and the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program. She has decades of specialization in Codependency, Adult Children of Alcoholics therapy, and recently the Family Recovery Zone through Dr. Carnes.

In 1988, she began personal training with Dr.Otto Kroeger, international expert on Type Psychology and author of “Type Talk”. Since this time she has utilized the Myers Briggs Type Indicator as a Certified Type Practitioner with individuals, couples and team building with organizations and boards of directors. She has been interviewed about her work in both the New York Times and by Time Magazine. Though a native Nashvillian, her global work has included serving on the International Development Council of Ruschlikon Theological Seminary, (formerly in Zurich, Switzerland) graduate work and private training at the Jungian Institute of Zurich, and hands on mission work in Kenya.

She is the coauthor of the upcoming book The Way to Stillness, which was released in January 2010. She is a speaker, seminar leader and Divorce Care facilitator.

For the past 20 years, she has taught and co-written materials/for the Spiritual Journey program at First Presbyterian Church, Nashville. The current series is “Healthy Boundaries” based on the bestsellers “Boundaries” and “Safe People” by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend.

Anne’s life includes one marriage of 22 years. She is a single mother of two wonderful adult sons ages 21 and 23.

Embracing Your Freedom by Susie Larson -- Book Review

I can count on one hand the number of books I've read that have moved me enough to inspire change. Embracing Your Freedom: A Personal Experience of God's Heart for Justice is definitely one of those books!

Author and speaker Susie Larson calls readers to look beyond their self-focused lives and embrace their freedom in Christ so that they may bring that same freedom to those who need it. Journey with Susie as she shares her own challenges in seeking justice and finding the deeper rewards that await those who "take hold of God's promises and reach out in Jesus' name".

In this empowering book, Susie shares stories of women, who with help from the International Justice Mission, have embraced their freedom and become champions for others in need. Readers will be called to no longer be held captive by their pasts and to seek the freedom and justice only God can give.

In some ways, Embracing Your Freedom reminds me of another book by my favorite Christian author, Kathi Macias. Beyond Me: Living a You-First Life in a Me-First World also called on readers to be true disciples of Christ. Larson's call is stronger and bolder, but still manageable.

While reading this book, I felt Larson was speaking directly to me, encouraging me to let go of the things that have held my heart captive, so that I may become the person He created me to be.

You will be forever touched and forever changed by Embracing Your Freedom!

Author Spotlight: Susie Larson and Embracing Your Freedom

While our culture places great emphasis on comfort, security, control, and success, there are deeper rewards for those who take hold of God’s promises and reach out in the Name of Christ. Adventure, faith, miracles, and a deep knowledge of Jesus Christ. This is what Susie calls her readers to realize.

Many women feel stuck in their faith. They are bored living in a Christian bubble and long for the greater adventure of significance God designed for them! But just how do we move past our fears and the lies that keep us bound to our past? And are we really called to change the world? Embracing Your Freedom: A Personal Experience of God's Heart for Justice will give you a deeper understanding of your freedom in Christ and a bigger view of God's heart for the world.

EXCERPT

“As you become more aware of God's heart for freedom, your heart will burn for it as well. If you will dare to put your foot down on the promises of God and refuse to relent until freedom becomes your reality, your appetite for the freedoms of others will increase as well. Take seriously what God has offered you here, because as a Believer living in this day, you are in a powerful position of influence." --Embracing Your Freedom

"'Embracing Your Freedom' was written for you--a woman who desires to live in personal freedom and is willing to help the helpless become free. Prepare to be challenged and emboldened. Prepare to change and become more like Jesus!" - Kendra Smiley, conference speaker, and author of Be the Parent, Journey of a Strong-willed Child, and Do Your Kids a Favor...Love Your Spouse

"In this important book, Susie invites women into life that really is life by naming them, naming us, as agents to extend God's justice to those who are bound. Women today are hungry for this kind of holy congruity. Thank you, Susie!" -Margot Starbuck, author of The Girl in the Orange Dress: Searching for a Father Who Does Not Fail

Ask Susie about her conviction for women, and she'll tell you, "The two pillars in my ministry, the two things I care most about are for women to be drawn into a 'deeper life in Christ' that they might live more 'powerful lives on earth.' When we pursue a thriving, personal, intimate walk of faith, we can't help but be compelled to make a difference in our world." With enthusiasm, humor, and conviction, author/speaker Susie Larson has spoken to thousands of women locally, nationally, and internationally. She is a member of the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association, Women in Christian Media, and has served on the board of directors for the Christian Authors Network. The Power of the Holy Ghost by Shay Bills, Author of Is Your Ghost Holy? (Giveaway)

Today's guest blogger is Shay Bills, speaker, entrepreneur and author of Is Your Ghost Holy?: Eight Principles for Evaluating Your Walk in the Spirit. We reviewed this title here, and asked Shay to come discuss the power of the Holy Ghost with us. This is one of the eight principles she discusses in her book. Stick with us to the very end and enter to win a free copy of Shay's book!

ALL POWER BELONGS TO GOD is how I begin chapter eight in my book, Is Your Ghost Holy?, because it is true and so profound that it still has people puzzled in the 21st Century. Saints of God do not have a hard time with the reality that in the beginning was God and God created all things including man and woman. But it is the undeniable power, the unquestionable ability and the unexplainable manifestation of His power that can not be expressed in words.

The Holy Ghost is absolutely necessary for saints of God to walk in the FULLNESS of Christ. There is no anointing without the Holy Ghost, there is no life without the Holy Ghost and there is no power as Paul describes in Phil. 3:10-11 when he says we will be made like Him in His resurrection power. Christians today have tried to take glory for who God is and what God does. Remember Christ made Himself no reputation, which ignited more power surrounding His being mere mortal man in the eyes of onlookers. But that same Jesus, coequal with the Father and the Holy Ghost, had all power. This being the same Jesus, when He ascended promised the Comforter would come, now resides in the inner man of Christians today and has ALL power. The Church, God’s church, has yet to see the manifestation of the power of the Holy Ghost. The power of the Holy Ghost is not in eloquence, delivery or knowledge. The power of the Holy Ghost is in the brokenness of humans so that all you see and hear is Jesus. Through brokenness the field is leveled and God’s people are on one accord and He can have His perfect work in our life, our ministry, our church, our family and this world. We live as if what happened on the Day of Pentecost ended in the book of Acts, not so. That same power is available and the Holy Ghost fire is still consuming souls today because somewhere people are tarrying, somewhere people are seeking Him and somewhere people are praying THY KINGDOM COME!

Blessings,

Summer Inspirational Reading Giveaway!!!

Are you ready for the big SUMMER READING GIVEAWAYS?

I have to admit this is tough for me because any time I enjoy a book I want to own it and hold onto it forever; but I literally have no room left on my shelves...even after making a few donations to the local library. They are almost at the point of asking me not to give them more books because they don't have the space to store them either.

But this means good news for all the readers here at The Book Connection. I certainly hope if this is your first time dropping in at The Book Connection that you'll become a follower, add us to your blogroll and let people know about us because we feature a lot of great books here.

Enough of my rambling, let's get started. This inspirational book pack includes four books: Choices, My Secrets, The Secret of Yahweh, Sermonsnacks ~ Help...Hope...and Encouragement for today...and You Can Lead an Atheist to Evidence but You Can't Make Him Think. Since these books reach different age groups, this would make an excellent addition to a Christian family's library.

Here is more information on these books:

Choices, My Secrets by Thomas Wade Bounds - This planned series for teens gives parents a way to jumpstart conversations about the important choices facing our young people today. In the first book, My Secrets, released by Xulon Press, young Rachel gets pregnant after one night of passion shared with her boyfriend Gary. She doesn't find out until after Gary leaves for college and he never returns any of her messages. Left alone to decide what she will do, Rachel believes abortion is the only way. As a frightened Rachel waits for the doctor to come in and perform the procedure, she passes out and has dreams of her unborn child, which make her realize she might have another choice.

The Secret of Yahweh by LeFerna Arnold-Welch - It's the start of a new school year and best friends Mary and Petey are hoping to avoid mean kids like The Con and Bitsy. But to their horror, The Con, Bitsy and some of the other mean kids are in Miss Sawyer's class too.

When the children are told that the words "under God" are being removed from the daily reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance, everyone is confused. Why can't they say it the way they always have? And so Miss Sawyer's class embarks upon a journey to discover how the modern interpretation of the First Amendment has removed any practice of religion from their school.

The day Mary brings J.C. Lamb with her to school turns into utter chaos as the children realize not everyone is able to see or hear the fuzzy lamb with the heart embroidered on his chest. But Miss Sawyer can see him, and she assures everyone if they come to Mystery Sunday at her church, everything will be made crystal clear. (Ages 7 - 12)

Sermonsnacks by Don Collette (autographed copy) - This powerful devotional will inspire you along life's journey and make the ordinary seem extraordinary. Donald Collette chose the best Scriptures and perfectly matched them with thought-provoking comments to put together a devotional that is powerful, yet easy to read.

You Can Lead an Atheist to Evidence but You Can't Make Him Think by Ray Comfort - This is a compilation of questions and answers from Comfort's Atheist Central blog, along with additional comments from the author. The book also includes quotes from Professor Stephen Hawking, author C. S. Lewis, Sir Issac Newton, and several Biblical quotations.

Tackling such issues as: Creation Must Have a Creator, The Promise of Heaven and Eternal Life and What Sets Christianity and Christians Apart, the author uses Biblical evidence and the lack of reliable evidence proving the theory of evolution, to engage the reader in a thought-provoking journey that leads to only one conclusion--God exists and He wants to have a relationship with you.

Is Your Ghost Holy? by Shay Bills - Book Review

Not every inspirational book you read is going to touch your heart or even make you think. But Is Your Ghost Holy? by Shay Bills does that and more. In this slender book full of powerful and moving words, the reader is given eight principles to help her evaluate her walk in the Spirit. The Principles of Truth, Life and Death, Faith, Love, Change, the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost and the Power of the Holy Ghost come together for an inspiring and empowering read.

The author's experience as a speaker, teacher and motivator truly shines in Is Your Ghost Holy?. Her conversational style and touching words will leave you thinking long after you close the cover on this book. But I recommend that you never really close this book, but leave it on your nightstand so that you can refer to it often, using it perhaps as a devotional on a regular basis.

Certain chapters may speak to you more than others. I found the seventh principle extremely helpful, especially considering some of the events I still hold onto from my past. In "The Principle of Blasphemy Against the Holy Ghost", Bills discusses how unforgiveness in the Christian walk keeps many stagnant in Christ. She explores the dangerous place that the state of unforgiveness is. With a firm grasp on Scripture, she discusses how easy it can be to notice unChristian behavior in others, but not in ourselves. And she fully explains what blasphemy against the Holy Ghost truly is.

Learn how to take the road less traveled and stand firm on the Word. Is Your Ghost Holy? by Shay Bills will show you how.

Life Savers from Stacy Gooch-Anderson

The first book I read by Stacy Gooch-Anderson was The Santa Letters--which I reviewed here. Since The Santa Letters touched me so deeply, when Stacy contacted me for a review of Life is Tough: I Doubt I'll Make It Out Alive, I eagerly accepted.

While I am getting closer to it in the TBR pile, I've glanced through a few of the entries and was floored to realize what a great sense of humor Stacy has. In Life is Tough, Stacy shares 28 life lessons that changed her perspective and helped her grow in character. This is truly a book of "A Mother's Life Lessons Learned Through Laughter".

And to that end, Stacy is providing us with one of her Life Savers. I had to choose this one, because anyone who knows me, knows that I am the most impatient person on the face of the planet.

How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you are on

If patience is a virtue, then I am most definitely NOT a virtuous woman!

Patience is a very hard thing for me. I tend to want things and answers now and not a minute later than instantly. But this is not always the way it works. Matter of fact, as I’m coming to find out, it rarely works this way. I guess God keeps giving me those lessons on patience hoping that one day I will learn its virtues.

Apparently I’m a slow learner because they keep coming at regular intervals and with increasing frequency. Like the other day, the sun had finally made an appearance after hiding for the better part of the fall and winter. The temperatures were up and so I thought a nice walk would be in order. I grabbed my walking shoes and a water bottle and headed off.

I forgot one small detail though; one shouldn’t take a blood pressure pill with a diuretic right before heading out where bathrooms are few and far between. I hadn’t been gone long when my fast pace and pumping heart kicked that medication into overdrive and sent me frantically looking for a public restroom along the route.

I whizzed (no pun intended) down the hill to a local gas station where I knew there were clean restrooms. Just as I reached for the door, a sweet older lady smiled at me and then slipped in and locked the door after sweetly telling me, “I’ll only be a minute”.

I stood there with my mouth gaping and my legs crossed. I didn’t dare move for fear that any mild movement would certainly turn me into a leaky faucet. I stood immobilized praying that she would finish up her business and get the heck outta Dodge so the new sheriff could claim her potty in peace and overwhelming relief.

I think she must’ve taken a bath in the bowl.

I must admit however, that old people have a way of really putting things into perspective. When she finally did emerge, she smiled again – a bit broader as she watched me inch into the restroom with crossed legs – and gave me a bit of old- timer’s wisdom. This nugget has become today’s “Life Saver”;

“How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you are on. Praise be to the Good Lord who allowed me enough agility to beat you to the bathroom door. The old plumbing ain’t what it used to be and they would’ve needed a mop and a ten gallon bucket if I’d been the one waiting out here."

Easy for her to say. Her minute was filled with the relief of dry Depends and a happy bladder. I looked back over my shoulder at her as she headed out to her car with a slightly more jovial step in her jaunt. I smiled.

It was nice to know that even when age does get the best of you, patience still isn’t a virtue but you can somehow manage to deal with the infirmity with a quick wit and a smile that makes others glad they had the ability to wait.

Sheri's Turn:

Three Ways to Begin Transforming Your Life Today
by Sheri Kaye Hoff

What if your days unfolded beautifully and joyfully? What if life could flow and you could live in the moment and savor those moments? I want this for you. I want you to be able to experience a life of joy. Here are three ways to begin transforming your life today: begin a daily journal, work on things that inspire you, and cultivate a generous spirit.

You may have heard of the benefits of journaling and you may even have tried writing in a journal. When I speak of journaling, I am referring to an active process for changing your thoughts and transforming your life. I am not talking about the diaries you may have kept in the past or even present. Use your journal for a check in on your attitude and your current state of mind, but then move beyond and strive to create the life of your dreams. I begin each day’s journal entry with, “Thank you for this beautiful, glorious day.” I end each entry with “Thy will be done.” My journal entries are filled with gratitude, sprinkled with some observations, and topped with my goals and dreams. Starting my morning with writing makes my day centered and full of purpose. When I read past journal entries, I am able to see progress and dreams fulfilled. When you look back on your journal entries, you will be able to see your transformation on paper and you will be amazed.

After you finish your journaling for the day, turn your attention to work that inspires you. Maybe you have a job that you are only doing to make ends meet. All is not lost. There is, perhaps, some way that you can alter your focus on your job to see something inspiring. Can you become involved in an extra project that interests you? For the self-employed individuals, I encourage you to take a look at your business and your projects. Does your business inspire you? If not, why not? How can you change it and mold it to be your true inspiration? When your work inspires you, your whole life takes on a new feeling of lightness. You will wake up and feel excited for each day. The amount of time you spend dreading will drastically decrease. Remember that you are not trapped, there is always an element of decision making.

You are now journaling each day and doing inspiring work; now turn your attention to opportunities to give generously each day. I am not referring to giving to the point of hurting your financial position or exhausting you. I am talking about giving out of joy and the desire to make a difference in someone’s life on a daily basis. Giving might involve small things or big things, you decide. The point is that you cultivate a generous spirit. You will notice a change in your life as you deliberately begin to give. If you are already giving, evaluate your choices and your feelings about them. Can you do more or different things? Enjoy that you make a difference in people’s lives.

Begin transforming your life today with a beautiful journal and daily appointment to write; develop work that inspires you; and give generously. You will feel more joy and be able to celebrate your life every day.
