Beyond the Books - Self-Care

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

I read this topic and just about fell out of my chair from laughing so hard. Self-care? Who has time for that? Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a working mom (though those terms are pretty much redundant), you are busy and self-care is the last thing that happens.

For me, I miss exercising. Never thought I would say it, but I felt so much better when I was working out. Haven't had the time or energy to do it in so long. Started a new devotional and I'm hoping it will clear my mind and recenter me. I'm only looking for three mornings a week for exercise. Can it really be that hard?

Sometimes I'll get  my hair colored or my nails done, but pretty much self-care in my world boils down to getting enough sleep each night...and that doesn't always happen either.

How do you handle self-care? Are you working toward it or are you already a pro?

Beyond the Books - Moving

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

When I saw this topic come up, I had to wonder if Karen was reading my mind. I'm starting to clean out my in-laws' house so I can move my mother-in-law in with us. Frightened and happy all at the same time.

Frightened because...
  • I'm really busy with the spring market and now have to find time to clean out the house they have lived in for 40 years.
  • What if I throw something sentimental away?
  • Where is all the other stuff going to go? My house is already filled floors to ceiling.
  • I don't know how it will be having her live with us.
  • There's still some discussion of where we are going to put her since the only extra bedroom--which is right now my office--is on the second floor and stairs aren't easy for her.

Happy because...

  • I won't be managing two households.
  • The girls will have their grandmother here.
  • I'll feel better when she isn't living on her own.
  • She won't need to drive as much.

I once moved three times in the span of 18 months, so I'm not looking forward to all that work; but it must be done. Hopefully it will go smoother than I think it will.

How about you? What do you think about moving?

Beyond the Books - 2018 Spring Goals

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

Spring is here, but someone should probably tell Mother Nature that the Northeast has had enough winter and the snow can stop at any time. Thankfully, we missed the brunt of this latest Nor'easter.

Since most of my goals center around reading and writing, I'm going to step away to draw up some more personal "me time" goals.

  1. Plant a vegetable and fruit garden. We had one, but as soon as I went back to work it became almost impossible to keep up. I'm determined that even if it is a very small one, a garden will be in my yard this year.
  2. Get back to exercising. Between work and taking care of the family and my in-laws, exercising has been non-existent. Need to change that for my own sake.
  3. De-clutter the house. I'm renting a dumpster, taking a week off, and cleaning the house. I'll donate a lot, but there is some stuff that is totally useless.
These are my three large personal goals. They are pretty vague, but my plan is to order some seeds by the end of the month, and hopefully, if we don't more snow, I can clean up the garden area by then too. As far as exercising go, I need to add it to my work calendar or it won't get done. I'm thinking maybe Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. First step to de-clutter is decide on a week off. Maybe it is school vacation week, but then I fear the girls will want to go out instead of help with the house. I might get more done if I do it when they are in school.

That's it for me. What are some of your goals?

Beyond the Books - St. Patrick's Day

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

I won't have much to contribute to this week's theme because I don't really celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I grew up Catholic, so patron saints were a big thing, but even back then it was just another day for me. Holyoke, MA holds a large parade. I was talking to someone from Holyoke today and she said the city would pretty much be shut down this coming Sunday because of the parade and all the corresponding events. I recall many years ago--before my girls were born--going to someone's house on the parade route early in the morning for breakfast and we hung out there until the parade was over. That's probably the closest we've ever come to celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

If you want a history of the holiday, you can visit History.com

Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? What are some of your favorite traditions?

Beyond the Books: Favorite Romantic Shows and Movies

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

Today's Beyond the Books topic is: Favorite Romantic Shows and Movies

I'm not much of a romantic, but I don't mind romantic stories upon occasion.

While a bit too hyped up for me to watch in the theater--I hate being a follower--Titanic is a beautiful love story between an aristocratic young woman and a poor artist.

I have to include this one because I married a Greek guy. My in-laws--God bless them--wanted to invite 400 people to our wedding and have a Greek orchestra band playing. We got married six months after building our house and had no money, so we settled on 100 guests and a three-string ensemble. Some of the stuff that happens in My Big Fat Greek Wedding is so true it's hilarious.

I loved Grease where good girl Sandy falls for greaser Danny. My only challenge with it: Sandy feels the need to change her entire look at the end to catch Danny's attention.

Dirty Dancing is the story of Frances "Baby" Houseman falling in love with a resort's dreamy dancing instructor. Loved this movie beginning to end. This one is great for its dancing and its characters.

My mother enjoyed The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough many years before the TV mini-series came out right before Easter in 1983. The book and movie span 60 years in the lives of the Cleary family and center around the youngest daughter, Meggie Cleary, who falls in love with the family's priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart.

What are some of your favorite romantic shows and movies?

Beyond the Books - Best Moments in Blogging

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

Today's Beyond the Books topic is: Best Moments in Blogging

Oh, my. This will be a tough one. I've been blogging for over ten years now. I also have had twelve blogs through the years and contributed to several others. I should be down to five active blogs now and I contribute to Christian Children's Authors twice a month. I'll do my best to keep this list down to a minimum.

  1. My first blog post at The Book Connection. By the time I started this blog, I had already been blogging for at least 18 months. My main reason for switching is that I had been hosting virtual book tours for Pump Up Your Book (Pump Up Your Book Promotion at the time), and my aspiring author blog was more about other authors than my writing. In order to be fair to the authors I was hosting (and my creativity), I wanted to separate them from my own rambles. It was a simple welcome post that started off this blog in July 2007.
  2. First review of a book an author sent me. I started out by blogging about books on my own shelves, but by asking (nagging) authors and hosting book tours, I was able to get some new books sent my way. I truly enjoyed Trust in the Wind by Vicki M. Taylor and still remember bits and pieces of it.
  3. First time hosting an author who became a friend. Sometimes you get books from authors and they thank you for a review, but you never see them again. Every once in a while you're lucky and that author becomes a friend. Such is the case with Marilyn Meredith. A talented, award-winning author of two of my favorite series, she never ceases to amaze me with all she does. Her friendship has been a true blessing.
  4. First book I read by Kathi Macias. If there is an author whose books have changed my life, it would have to be Kathi Macias. Beyond Me: Living a You-First Life in a Me-First World made me stop, reflect, and consider how I approach life. Many of her books--fiction and non-fiction--have touched me this way. I consider her a dear friend.
  5. Starting The Children's and Teens' Book Connection (TC&TBC). When I started The Book Connection, I covered books for all ages. I eventually felt that books for younger people needed their own space, so in July 2009 I started TC&TBC. In addition to books for pre-school through young adult (depending on content), this is the blog where I discuss my own writing for children.
  6. The year I read the most books. Though not impressive for everyone, in 2010 I read a record breaking 174 books. It started to go down after that year and now I am lucky to read 35 because my work schedule and family life are so nutty.
  7. Our first blog award. Back in 2009, The Book Connection was still a pretty new thing. Virtual book tours had really taken off and I was a busy gal coordinating them. That's when this blog received its first award. It received a couple of others, but I think blog awards got repetitive and people started saying they were award-free zones.
  8. Little Shepherd Breaks into Amazon Top 100 Books. When my first book, Little Shepherd, came out in 2010, I followed its rankings religiously. Not only did it hit the Amazon Bestsellers list in its category seven times during the early weeks of its release, it also broke into the Amazon Top 100 for large print children's books. I believe it made it up to #18. Not too shabby.
There are so many other great blogging moments that I better stop before this post becomes a novel. Thanks to everyone who has blessed me along this blogging journey. I've met a lot of wonderful people online and I've had the chance to read some fabulous books. Here's to many more blogging memories for years to come.

Beyond the Books: Foods that Remind You of Childhood

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

Today's Beyond the Books topic is: Foods that remind you of childhood

This is going to be a fun topic. I joke around that I've blocked out most of my childhood for self-preservation, but I do remember some fun stuff too. My uncle, a widower, lived next door to us and he came over for supper every night. My mom, while a decent cook, was not an imaginative one. Possibly also because of our skinny budget, we mostly ate the same things week after week.

Sunday after church we had roast beef and mashed potatoes. Every Sunday was eleven o'clock mass followed by roast beef and mashed potatoes. Then the family played board games the rest of the afternoon and had a light supper.

Considering that Wednesdays were Prince spaghetti days in my childhood--check out this classic commercial-we had spaghetti once a week. But it wasn't Prince. It was Mueller's and the sauce was Ragu.

One might not be able to call themselves Canadian if they didn't eat French meat pie or French meat stuffing around the holidays. My sister makes them both well. I've been aching to try my hands at making meat pie. I could buy it frozen, but it wouldn't be the same thing.

Speaking of the holidays, every Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, my mother would buy a bag of walnuts in the shell. She would put them in a large bowl with steel nut crackers. I buy mine already shelled these days.

We would also have a little bowl of buttermints--not that I knew they were called that. These pastel candies practically melt in your mouth. They were a rare treat in my childhood home.

No pantry of the 70's would be complete without a can of SPAM. I wouldn't touch the stuff now, but back then SPAM helped you stretch your dollar and a can could feed all five of us.

There was also Deviled Ham, which my mother would use to quickly make ham and pickle, AKA ham salad.

Remember my uncle who lived next door? He liked a food that to this day I can barely stand to look at. My mother would only make it once in a while and, on that day, she would also make our meals at the same time. Our family would all sit down to supper and there would be my uncle with his gross looking liver and onions. Yuck!

What are some foods that remind you of  your childhood? Do you still eat them now?

Caffeine & Fairydust had a powerful post about overcoming comparision.

Reviews by Martha's Bookshelf shared a review of Into the Guns (America Rising) by William C. Dietz.

Fit Foodie Finds posted a yummy looking recipe for No-Bake Chocolate Coconut Energy Bars.

Finally, Carrots 'N" Cake shared a high-intensity Kettlebell workout video.

What are some posts that caught your attention from around the web this week?

Beyond the Books - 2018 Blogging Goals

Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right by Kissin Blue Karen. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where she throws out a topic (mostly non-bookish) and others blog about it.

Starting off the year right our first topic is....

2018 Blogging Goals

I've already set my writing, real estate, and personal goals for 2018, but let's nail down blogging in some detail.

I shared on The Children's and Teens' Book Connection (TCTBC) that I wanted to be sure to blog at each of my four blogs twice a week. TCTBC focuses on books for pre-schoolers up to young adults (depending on content).

The Book Connection, as you know since you're here, is for adult fiction and non-fiction.

An Imperfect Christian Mom is a blog discussing topics that are important to me as a Christian mom, including family friendly books and movies.

Books Can Be Deadly is a blog about mystery, suspense, thrillers, and true crime books.

I also blog twice a month at Christian Children’s Authors where I am one of a group of Christian authors discussing family activities, books, writing, and more.

How can I achieve my goal?

  1. Add blog days to my calendar. I'm working on time blocking my calendar in earnest and adding those dates (I'm such a paper calendar girl) to Outlook so they feed into my phone and provide me reminders that aren't as easy to ignore.
  2. Set aside one hour on Sunday evenings to pre-schedule the following week's posts. This will be tough because I work so much and in the evenings I am usually tired. It might have to become early Saturday morning.
  3. Participate in two weekly blog memes. This is one of the easiest ways to add blog content. Some are more time consuming than others, so I'll have to choose wisely.
  4. Look over my book review spreadsheet and put forth a plan to promote books if I haven't had time to read them yet. While I can't control how long it will take me to read a book or how much reading time I'll have, I want to focus on creating a regular blog column that enables me to discuss books in my TBR pile. Used to be the First Chapter Review, but those might take more time than I have. Still plan to continue the First Chapter Reviews when I have time.
What do you think of these goals? What are some of your blogging goals for 2018? How many years have you been blogging? If you have a special blogging anniversary coming up--5 years, 7 years, 10 years, etc.--are you planning anything special?
