Where did you grow up?

Brookline, Massachusetts.

When did you begin writing?

I’ve loved writing more than anything else for as long as I can remember. When I was little, I would orally recite stories for an adult to type. Then I would title and illustrate them, and then I would bind them with old wallpaper, glue, or staples. My mother saved a few of my earliest “books.” I have one in a plastic storage bag in my desk. It says I was six years old when I made it.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I write during the day. I write every single day—weekends, holidays, vacations. I don’t write all day every day, but I do write every day. On vacations I get up early just to have time to write in the hotel room and I often find coffee shops or museum cafés where I can sit and write.

What is this book about?

It’s a love story. Really, it’s about the power of love to help us heal our visible and invisible wounds, and the struggle to balance darkness and light in our lives. The story follows world-famous inspirational novelist Tess Lee and counterterrorism agent Jack Miller. Both have given so much to others, but haunted by past violence, neither has been able to find personal happiness. The night Tess and Jack meet, their connection is palpable. She examines the scars on his body and says, “I’ve never seen anyone whose outsides match my insides.” The two embark on an epic love story.

What inspired you to write it?

When I was ten years old, I tried to write a novel. I don’t remember all the details, but it was a love story about two people who help each other heal. I wasn’t able to finish it at the time. I think the seed lived inside of me my entire life. One night several years ago, I stepped out onto the balcony of my home office and looked up at the stars. Like a bolt, Shooting Stars Above came to, as a complete book. I wrote the first draft in only ten days. It was magical. I believe Shooting Stars Above is the book I tried to write when I was ten. There’s a saying that “hurt people hurt people.” Sometimes that isn’t true. Sometimes people in pain are able to love others in extraordinary ways. That’s the core inspiration behind the book.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

It was mostly smooth sailing because it’s my fourth novel with this publisher. I absolutely love working with them and have learned their processes pretty well at this point. The one difficult thing is that I’ve dealt with several major personal challenges in the months leading up to the release—several deaths including my mentor and my beloved dog who I had for fifteen and a half years. It’s really hard to get into a promotion mindset when you’re experiencing deep grief and loss.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

It's available everywhere books are sold. Readers ordering online can look at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop, or they can visit the She Writes Press or Simon & Schuster webpages for the book to see a range of options. You can always try your local independent bookstore too, and if they don’t carry it, they can order it.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Develop a relationship with your work that is not dependent on anything external—positive or negative.

What is up next for you?

I fell so deeply in love with the characters in Shooting Stars Above that it became a series called The Celestial Bodies Romances. There are six books written to date and I genuinely love each more than the one before. We’ll be releasing one each spring. Shooting Stars Above includes the first chapter of the next book, Twinkle of Doubt. Each novel takes place a year after the last and follows the same characters, although some fun new characters are introduced across the series too. Each series title explores love and a different theme. The first book is about love and healing. Other topics include doubt, intimacy, trust, commitment, and faith. While there are different kinds of dramatic events that happen in each book, I can promise you each is filled with love, a few laughs, and hopefully a bit of inspiration. While each novel is a contained stand-alone book, and there are no cliffhangers, if you read the entire series there is also a larger narrative arc. Really, the series is about learning to balance lightness and darkness in our lives so that we may live in full color. Before the next series book comes out, I’m releasing a different novel called Cinematic Destinies on September 2, which is already available for preorder. It’s a romance with multiple love stories and a fun film shoot in Iceland. It’s a total feel-good for readers who enjoy Hollywood love stories with heart. I loved writing it.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Shooting Stars Above has held my hand and wrapped me in the warmest embrace for quite some time. I hope it does the same for readers. I hope it brings a sense of hope and love, and a reminder that kindness matters. Including be kind to ourselves.

Legendary actor Finn Forrester and his wife philosopher Ella Sinclair Forrester met on the location shoot for Jean Mercier’s film Celebration. Free-spirited Georgia, her mother’s spitting image and an actress following in her father’s footsteps, has been cast in Jean Mercier’s final film, mysteriously titled Beauty. When she arrives on set in Iceland and meets her costar, sparks fly. Is history repeating itself? How has growing up in the shadow of the world’s most iconic love story affected each of the Forrester children?

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a suburb of New York called Monsey. I was brought up to say what you mean and to mean what you say.

When did you begin writing?

I started writing poems, songs, and books at the ripe old age of 12. That being said, my first book was published in 2010, so I was clearly much older.

What is this book about? Unorganized Crime:

As Jazz finds herself falling from a helicopter, Gage St. Claire comes to her rescue. Organized crime is once again the culprit of her parents’ situation, and as usual, she is caught in the crossfire. Gage pulls her out of the water and helps her escape to safety. The love between them is undiscovered as he tries to leave her behind in an attempt to keep her safe and move forward with his black ops pursuit. Jazz becomes an undercover cop with wiping out organized crime forever as her goal. After Jazz exposes one of the largest crime families in the country, quite by accident, she is hired to expose crime syndicate leader Michael Giambetti Jr., otherwise known as Achilles. Achilles earned his nickname because he has no weaknesses. He has no weaknesses, that is until he meets Jazz. Achilles has been untouchable, and if she were to break this case, she could finally prove herself as a serious undercover officer. Her job is not an easy one, and people around her are not who they appear to be. Will Gage come back for Jazz, or will he be lost to her forever? Will she crack the case on her own? Read as this courageous upstart stumbles through another adventure.

Unorganized Secrets:

With Achilles still on the run, Gage and Hawk do what they can to protect their own. Gage and Jazz make their relationship official, while Hawk decides it's time to do the same. When Hawk shows up at Elizabeth's doorstep, she is gone, and his son, whom he has never met, is also missing. The mystery surrounding Elizabeth takes Hawk to a dark place. When he opens the door to Elizabeth's past, who will he find behind it?

What inspired you to write them?

Sometimes I will have a dream about a new storyline and just run with it. I think that is how I initially got the idea. I will admit that quite a few characters came from Easter’s Lilly, my first series. I think sometimes I get too attached to my characters.

How are they similar to other books in their genre? How are they different?

They are similar due to the POV. Most of the books I have seen in this particular genre are in the first person. The books are different because no matter how tough and unstoppable my heroes are, they are as gentle as a lamb with their women. I don’t always see that in what I read.

What is the most important thing readers can learn from your book?

Readers will learn from my books that good always triumphs over evil.

Where can readers purchase a copy?

http://www.JudySerrano.com

http://amazon.com

What is up next for you?

I am working on a new book. I haven’t decided if I am going to make it crime fiction or supernatural yet. It depends on how my characters are feeling when I start typing.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today. If any of your readers pick up one of my books, I promise, they won’t be able to put it down.

Top Ten Things I Like/Dislike When It Comes To Romances In Books

We have an option this week: all likes, all dislikes, or a mixture of both. I am going with a mix, and I will start with my likes because positive first makes the negative a bit easier to swallow...just ask Mary Poppins.

Likes

  1. Flawed heroes and heroines. No one is perfect. In my opinion, perfect is boring. I want my characters to be flawed. It's okay for the main characters in a romance novel not to like every single thing about each other too.
  2. Characters with history. One of the best romantic suspense novels I ever read was Beyond the Code of Conduct by K. M. Daughters. The main characters are Homicide Detective Joe Sullivan and FBI Special Agent Bobbie Leighton. An incident in their past tore them apart, but when Joe's brother is murdered, they are forced to pose as a married couple to catch the culprit. Sparks were definitely flying.
  3. Cowboys. I can't help. I love me a good cowboy romance. Ranches, horses, muscles bulging underneath flannel shirts...they get me every time.
  4. Historical settings. Since I read a lot of historical fiction, this is probably a no-brainer. I'm partial to the mid- to late 1800s.
  5. Sarcastic heroines. They really should crown me the Queen of Sarcasm. I love it. I use it. Sarcastic female characters are my friends.
Dislikes
  1. Love at first sight. My teenage daughter is so into this right now. I'm guessing it might exist somewhere, but I believe true love takes time to develop. It's okay when characters are instantly attracted to each other, but even then, it can't go overboard.
  2. Raunchy sex scenes. Overly graphic sex scenes with tons of raunchy dialogue do nothing for me; except maybe make me want to close the book.
  3. Love triangles. I know they are popular, but I feel there can be enough conflict and tension between two main characters without a third person involved.
  4. Needy characters. Whether it is the hero or the heroine, if a character is too needy I feel like slapping them offside the head.
  5. Romance as the entire plot. I'm sure I am more drawn to romantic suspense than traditional romances simply because there is an engaging side story to balance out all that drippy love stuff.
What are your likes and dislikes when it comes to romance in books?

First Chapter Review: The Cowboy's Christmas Miracle by RaeAnne Thayne

This is one of the first e-books I sampled after Santa brought my first Kindle. I happen to be a sucker for cowboy stories. I enjoyed the sample and purchased the book a few months later. I've tried to make room in my schedule to read it, but it seems I always have other requests ahead of it. Now that I've read the first chapter, I really want to make time to continue this story.

TITLE:  The Cowboy's Christmas Miracle

AUTHOR: RaeAnne Thayne

BLURB: Christmas was tough for widow Jenna Wheeler and her four children. But even though she'd sold part of her family's land to make ends meet, she was determined to spin the holiday into the stuff of magic--no matter what it took. Now if she could only find a job....

Maybe her new landlord could oblige--gorgeous, child-averse Carson McRaven. He needed a chef, and he knew the lovely Jenna could do a bang-up job--if only she could keep her brood out of his hair. But as he found himself catapulted into the cheerful chaos of her family...not to mention Jenna's arms... he learned more about the spirit of Christmas than he'd ever dreamed.

COVER:  Nice. Definitely a cover one would expect to see on a romance novel: man and woman in each other's arms, the background appropriate to the story. I'm not sure, however, which house this is supposed to be. I'm guessing Jenna's, since Carson is a bit of a Scrooge, but the first chapter led me to believe things are tight financially and that Jenna is overwhelmed. That house on the cover is rather elegant looking; not quite what one would expect from a struggling mom.

FIRST CHAPTER:  This story opens with Carson McRaven coming upon the widow Wheeler's "brats" who are up to no good again. One of the three boys is walking along the rail fence on his property. It seems after the death of her husband, Jenna sold the majority of the land to Carson, but kept a small corner of it for her family to live.

The boy falls off the fence and hits his head, so Carson drives the boys up to their house, where Jenna and Carson have a tense discussion over her ability to keep her children off his land. Neither, however, can deny their secret attraction to each other.

KEEPING READING:  Oh yes! This first chapter is the perfect set up for Carson and Jenna to get more involved in each other's lives. Her kids are thorns in Carson's side. Jenna is overwhelmed with caring for her family all alone and trying to start up her catering business, so she can support her brood. Her youngest child, the only girl, is still a toddler. You know by this chapter that Carson and Jenna have had this "keep your kids off my property" conversation more than once, and he's not too happy that her stupid kid got hurt and he got stuck bringing the boys home. You also get a glimpse into how one of her sons feels about Carson when he accuses him of stealing their land. Definitely a story you want to read well into the night.

The Fairy Tale Bride (Once Upon a Wedding) by Kelly McClymer

Miranda Fenster was known as the Fairy Tale Miss during the one disastrous London season that convinced her she would never have a happily-ever-after. But when her brother's love match is thwarted by the impossibly proper Duke of Kerstone, Miranda sets off to convince the duke to champion her brother's cause for love. Kelly McClymer started out writing plays for her sister to perform for their parents. She branched out to writing for her high school newspaper, and then began a futile attempt to write science fiction. At last, with her historical romance novels, she achieved the goal of published author. And then, in a leap of faith, she left romance for the Young Adult world of fantasy and witchcraft. She may be secretly working her way back to science fiction, but mum’s the word on that one.

Author Spotlight: Daniella by JoAnn Carter (Encouraging faith though fiction)

When Harrison Beckman meets his father’s secretary, Daniella Duncan, she’s shy and self-conscious. Harrison, however, is determined to get to know her better. Before he gets to do that a rival comes along to steal Dani’s heart as quickly and thoroughly as the company’s contracts, which have been disappearing.

As the mystery unfolds, Harrison has to fight for the woman he loves, even though this means crossing swords with his father and his determined adversary. Will Harrison be able to find the love that could await them or will it be too late?

Author's note:  While in the middle of writing this story, I heard the song MIRROR MIRROR by Barlow Girl on the radio. As I listened to the lyrics, it hit me how many women like Dani, (the heroine in DANIELLA) struggles with self-image.

As the plot develops, and Dani comes to the realization God loves her the way he made her. I had to be honest and ask myself, "Do I believe that?" It’s easy for me to nod my head while I’m writing this, but it’s another story when I’m standing in one of those dinky changing rooms try to find a bathing suit for the summer!

Accepting myself is sometimes is a daily struggle. In the same way this story has challenged me, as you experience Dani growth reading this book, it’s my prayer that it will draw you closer to God as well. (If you’d like to hear Mirror Mirror, click onto this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZgq8pA-ipY&feature=related )

Read the excerpt!

Harrison took the folder from her extended hand. Her hand seemed so small, and he had the strangest desire to protect her from whatever inner battle she was fighting. "I’m sorry. I know you’ve been with our advertising firm for quite a while now, but until today, I’ve never met you." He added with a smile, "Forgive me, I’m horrible with names. What’s yours again?"

Her eyes grew wide. With a nervous catch, she said, "Daniella Duncan."

"I like that name. May I call you Daniella?"

She shrugged. "Everybody calls me Dani."

"I think I prefer Daniella." Still studying her face, Harrison added, "Somehow, Dani doesn’t seem to fit you."

"Oh, Dani fits me all right. It sounds short and fat." Her hand clamped over her mouth, and her eyes grew even wider. Harrison’s heart nearly broke when she asked, "Did I really say that out loud?"

It had been drilled into his head since he was a boy never to talk to women about two things: their age and their weight. Now, what should he do with this hanging hot potato? Ignore it. "I didn’t hear anything if you didn’t." He tried to continue with the previous introductions. "Everyone calls my father Mr. Beckman, so I go by Harrison."

"Okay. I’ll try to remember that." Daniella seemed to have reached her limit; she looked like a cat being chased by a mouse, desperate for escape.
"Um, I really need to get back now, so..."

"Sure. Thanks again." Harrison didn’t even know if she heard him as she turned and left with quick steps.

He stood quietly by his door and listened to the clickety-clack sound Daniella’s shoes made on the linoleum fade into a soft pitter-patter as she retreated down the hallway. He shut his door while contemplating the strange woman who was just in his office. Pretty but strange...yes, definitely strange. Finally, he shrugged his shoulders and went back to the tasks at hand.

By Heart and Compass by Danielle Thorne - Author Interview and Giveaway at Linda Weaver Clarke's Blog

Check out this great author interview and giveaway over at Linda Weaver Clarke's blog.

Danielle Thorne freelanced for online and print magazines from 1998 through 2001, adding reviewing and editing to her resume. She is the author of The Privateer, a 1729 historical about British privateering in the Caribbean and Turtle Soup, a sweet contemporary romance set between Atlanta and St. Thomas.

Danielle currently writes from south of Atlanta, Georgia. She lives with four sons and her husband, who is an air traffic controller.

So, what's By Heart and Compass all about?

When Lacey Whitman buys a restored Victorian home, she never dreams discovering an antique diary will lead her back to sea and into the arms of the dive bum she’d rather forget. Her habit of living in the past comes to a screeching halt as diver Max Bertrand and the diary of his ancestor take Lacey on the quest of a lifetime: To discover and raise the privateer ship, Specter, and bring the treasure and legacy of a true hero home again. But will finding it cost her heart?

Read an excerpt!

Sitting outside, one of the divers looked busy replacing the o-ring on a scuba tank.

"I'm looking for Max?"

The long haired employee didn't bother to stand, much less look up.

"So?"

"I'm Lacey Whitman, and I'm looking for the Max that owns the museum."

"You call that worthless shack a museum?"

Dumbfounded, Lacey couldn't think of any reply.

"What do you want?"

"I'm looking for Max," she repeated, feeling a flash of impatience. "I have some papers for him."

"Warrant, restraining order, or paternity test?"

After a pause in which she realized he was serious, she replied in frustration, "I have some research for the Bertrand family and someone at the museum told me to come down here."

Lacey caught herself biting her lip.

Finally, the man of absolutely no assistance put down the tank and stood up. Short and compact, he had amazing turquoise eyes that glowed from a dark, tanned complexion. Loose strands of sun-kissed brown hair blew about his face in the breeze.

"Max doesn't need anymore paperwork. He doesn't want to see your research, and he is not giving dive lessons."

"I didn't ask for a dive lesson."

The diver sat back down again, crossing thick tattooed arms over himself. They stared one another down until he won. It was cheating to look her over as if she was a sweet little morsel, but it worked.

"I just want to talk to Max," she demanded.

He stared back with no expression. "You just did. Now get off my beach."

Lacey's cheeks were already flushed from getting the once over by this beach bum. His insult made her red all over.

"I'll be sure to let them know at the Bertrand Museum," she threatened, as if it mattered.

She turned on her heel and stalked off but he called after her, "Lady, I am the Bertrand Museum!"

Interview with Romance Author Marcia Lynn McClure and Giveaway at Linda Weaver Clarke's Blog

I know you're impatient to hear about the next Book Pack in The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Giveaway, but I didn't want you to miss out on this one.

Linda Weaver Clarke has another international giveaway going on right now, this time with romance author Marcia Lynn McClure. Up for grabs is a copy of Weathered Too Young.

When Lark appears on the Evans’ porch, Tom instantly hires her to keep house and cook for himself and his cantankerous elder brother, Slater. It doesn’t take long for Slater Evans to unknowingly capture her heart. Lark’s true age is not the only truth she has kept from Slater and Tom Evans. Darker secrets lay imprisoned deep within her heart. However, secrets are made to be found out. Would Lark discover the love she’d never dared to hope for?

Now, this sounds like a romance novel I can certainly get into. McClure has this to say about one of the Evans brothers, "Slater Evans is delicious! Masculine, brooding, and hiding secrets…yet with a clever wit and sense of humor!"

Who doesn't like delicious, masculine, brooding, and secretive men who are witty and have a sense of humor?

How can you win a copy of Weathered Too Young? Follow this link to Linda's blog and leave a comment that includes your email address.

This giveaway ends on July 2nd, so you better do it right now while you're thinking about it. Go ahead, you know you want a copy of this book!

Marcia Lynn McClure is surrounded by the gorgeous and captivating desert land of New Mexico, creating the perfect mood to write her romance novels. She grew up hearing “tales of runaway buckboards, mule-drawn plows; stories of hardship and tragedy, love and loss.” These family legends led Marcia to writing novels. Author Spotlight: Promises Kept by Cindy Bradford (Comment for your chance to win)

Promises Kept is Faith’s story, an unforgettable young woman whose life’s journey has been filled with uncertainty, of searching for people and answers that others take for granted. Compassionate and courageous, she never gives up, showing strength and character beyond her years. It is also the story about the power of the human spirit, of family, friends and love.

The book is a sequel to Cindy Bradford’s first novel, Keeping Faith, but can also stand alone as an independent book. Avid readers of the romance genre will fall in love with Faith O’Brien’s gritty determination. After finding the father she never knew until adulthood, and graduating law school, she is focused on bringing down the priest who abused her father as a child. She wants the cunning, deceitful cleric put behind bars long enough that no other young boy will ever have to fear his touch. To do this, she takes on a veteran, highly experienced and shrewd Boston lawyer who will go to any means to win a case. But, he underestimates her passion for justice, her fight for right against a wrong.

The story transforms from the legal battle on behalf of her father into a beautiful love story as she falls madly in love with her colleague, Tyler England. Soon, her fighting instincts are called on like never before. Only this time her intelligence, perseverance and resolve may not be enough.
Excerpt:

He knew that several years earlier she might have finished her sentence and gone a step further, but during the last few years, she had become more refined, softer around the edges. In law school she had learned cases, canons and codes, and she had acquired sophistication as well. Both made her more confident, determined, and firmer in her resolve. The refinement made her delivery poised and articulate, although she could still be brash and blunt with a comment. Undoubtedly, she was tough, but sensitive, a fighter with a heart. She cut no slack, yet she was generous in her compassion. It is the total package of complexity and contrasts that makes her a good lawyer already, before her first case, Patrick thought.

“When can you come to Maine?” Patrick asked.

“As soon as I get a ticket and pack. Where should I fly into?”

“Why don’t you see if you can get a ticket to Bangor? If not, then Portland. We’ll probably want a couple of days here to talk and plan.”

“Okay. I’ll call you back as soon as I know times and which airport.”

“Faith, hang on. How’s your mother?”

“Good,” she said. “She wants to come as soon as things begin.”

“Really? She really wants to do that?”

“Yes, she has a lot of vacation coming and she can stay with me.”

“Tell her that would be good and that I asked about her, will you?”

“Sure, Dad, but you could tell her yourself, you know.”

“Yes, maybe I will. We’ll see.”

But Faith knew he wouldn’t call Sue nor could she figure out why. She had asked him several times why he wouldn’t make the first move to mend the scars of their past, but he never had an answer. She wasn’t sure he knew.

Cindy Bradford, Ph.D., is also the author of Keeping Faith and Promises Kept. She lives at South Padre Island, Texas, and spends several months a year in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Love is in the Air -- The Book Connection's Romance Picks

Believe it or not, I used to shy away from romance novels. I'm not a very romantic person, and the romance novels from twenty years ago did not seem to have as much umph as the ones I've read over the past few years.

This is another reading lesson learned: never swear off a genre just because at some point you read a few books that you didn't care for.

As we get ready to celebrate Valentine's Day, here's a short list of some of our favorite romantic reads:

I have to thank Vicki M. Taylor for turning me back on to romance novels. I think this is the first book I reviewed for Pump Up Your Book Promotion in 2007, before I was even staff member.

Trust in the Wind tells the story of a young, single mother named Joanne, and Roy, the country sheriff who is still hurting from the loss of his wife and child during a burglary gone wrong. Superb writing made this a winner, and made me reconsider reading more of the genre.

I must also include Mistress of the Revolution: A Novel by Catherine Delors. While I love historical fiction, historical romance really wasn't too much on my radar--and I certainly wasn't thinking to read about anything set during the French Revolution. Excellent book that I would happily read again.

Her Warrior King (Harlequin Historical Series) is a book I won from a giveaway. A Harlequin Historical, this is another book I probably wouldn't have thought to pick up. Not typically a time period I would read about, but I was totally captivated by the story. The guy on the cover isn't bad either.

KILLER CAREER by Morgan Mandel was a book I requested to read. The unique premise of this book, the suspense, and the relationship between Julie and Dade made sure I couldn't put this book down.

Both Against Doctor's Orders and Beyond the Code of Conduct have made me a huge fan of K.M. Daughters. I have the third book of the Sullivan Boys series on my Kindle and can't wait to read it.

Cowboy Fling by Sherry James is sure to get your blood pumping. I've loved all of Sherry's books that I've read. I know she's got some other books in the works, so hopefully we'll see a new release from her soon!

Corrigans' Pool was a huge hit with me this year. The Civil War era is my favorite time period, so that is always a plus. But add to that the interesting characters, the engaging storyline, and the determination of Ella Corrigan, and you've definitely got a winner.

And last, but certainly not least, Wind of the Spirit (American Patriot) by J.M. Hochstetler captivated me from the very beginning. This is the third book of Hochstetler's American Patriot series. We will review the first two books in this series later in the year.

Books are the perfect gift any time of year. We hope you'll consider these fabulous romance novels the next time you're shopping.
