FIRST CHAPTER: It is the opening day of the Wiggle Butt Manor Agility Course and festival featuring all kinds of fun things. Charlie is glad to be back in Orca Cove for good, but she needs to find a place to live, and there is that odd maybe yes, maybe no thing going on with Nick. When Bentley and his annoying owner arrive, there is sure to be trouble. 

KEEP READING: That is affirmative! What a cute story. I'm not always drawn to mysteries featuring animals. Here, they blend right into the storyline nicely. Told from Charlie's first-person point of view, you get a glimpse into what she is dealing with and a hint of romance with Nick. It is plain to see that Bentley's owner is going to stir things up. I look forward to reading more.

First Chapter Review: Staged by Caitlin Rother

 

Caitlin Rother sent me a digital copy of Staged, the second book in her Katrina & Goode series, for review. Since reading time has been little to none this summer, here is my review of the first chapter.

But she has to keep the sexy surfer at arm’s length, because dating him is off limits. For now.

Teaming up, they make coordinated progress down each path. Digging deeper into La Jolla’s corrupt network of elites, they uncover a pattern of lies, depravity, and greed. And with every new discovery, Katrina is pulled closer to danger…and to Goode.

Sharing sexy phone calls and sunset drinks isn’t exactly following the rules, but fully crossing that line could jeopardize the case. As they start to connect the dots, they realize they must risk everything to bring down the shadowy cabal that kills to keep its secrets.

COVER: The cover for Staged is similar in style and format to the first book in the series, making it easily identifiable. I love the colors of this one. 

FIRST CHAPTER: The book opens with a healthy-sized prologue whose events take place five and a half years before the first chapter. In the present day, Goode is reviewing investigative reports regarding a murder case and feeling pretty down. His relationship with Katrina is on hold while the investigation is underway. Rusty Stone, his good friend and boss, receives a troubling phone call, which ensures Goode isn't getting to the beach to unwind anytime soon.

KEEP READING: I enjoyed these characters in Hooked, so I will definitely keep reading. While the prologue is longer than usual, I'm glad I chose not to ignore it, because you will get a hint of how the past and present collide in this novel. Stone is a fun character, and I think he will remain a favorite of mine. The first chapter is a bit heavy on backstory, which slows the pace of the current-day happenings down. I still think it works nicely,  and the chapter wraps up well.

COVER: All the covers for this series are amazing. You get that old-style New England feel, and the colors are muted, yet stunning. 

FIRST CHAPTER: It is 1861. Lincoln has been elected President of the United States, but has not yet taken office. Rumblings of war are stirring, and states have seceded from the Union. Despite Elcira and Felix yearning to keep the family safe, even the Cranberrys may be pulled into the conflict no one thought would come. 

KEEP READING: The Sparrow and The Crow has a strong opening, which draws the reader in. It is 1861, and Elcira is now a grandmother. Felix is destined to inherit the family property one day. However, what seems like a distant or not even likely war threatens the family's peace and prosperity. Cusano does an excellent job of setting the scene,  creating quick tension, and ends well so that the reader is eager to continue.  Out of all three books, this might end up being my favorite. The descriptive details are fewer. The first chapter tighter. Though there is backstory tying to the first book, it is not so abundant as to overwhelm the current storyline. Looking forward to reading more.

On opening night, Lucy and Stormie are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their other co-star, Van, who should have been there two hours earlier. But Lucy knows Van wouldn't miss this night for the world. What has happened to her?

KEEP READING: With tight writing, unique characters, and its cliffhanger ending, the opening chapter of ZigZag Girl is definitely one that makes me want to continue. The prologue has me a bit disturbed about how dark this story is going to get. Still, Lucy is a strong narrator and intriguing. I plan to keep going.

FIRST CHAPTER: Since this is a story collection, I read the entire first story. Sgt. Winston Windflower and his growing family have relocated to St. John's thanks to a new job opportunity. Having taken in young Stella after her mother passed away, in this story, she takes a liking to a new activity, which leads to a special request from Santa Claus. 

KEEP READING: I've already read a couple of books in this series, so I knew what to expect. Martin delivers a charming, relatable tale of the season with "Waiting for Santa." The third-person narrator maintains a lively tone as they guide the reader through the story of a girl who is confident that her wish will be granted. Such a special story. I look forward to reading more from this collection.

COVER: Isn't this a fabulous cover? Love the colors. You know right away what genre this is. The lit trees in the background are a nice addition. And Sir Wolfgang (the cat) flashes some attitude, which lets you know he is a force to be reckoned with. 

FIRST CHAPTER: Nash is coming off the practice field when a trainer says the coach wants to see him. That's when he learns his time with the Rams is over. He's been traded to Buffalo. 

KEEP READING: Will I keep reading? Absolutely! West wisely kept the opening chapter short to ramp up the tension. By the end of the second chapter, Nash's life has changed in more than one major way. The whimsical interior artwork is a nice touch. Though the reader doesn't meet Eden in the first two chapters, we know with Nash's quick departure from Los Angeles that it won't be long until she is on the scene.

No, but my work schedule has been a word that starts with B, ends with H, and rhymes with witch. This funny contemporary novel is one that I've been eagerly anticipating for weeks. COVER: This is not the typical cover I expect on a book by Sheila Roberts, but it is a perfect fit for the plot and reminds us of the movie that inspired the novel. 

FIRST CHAPTER: A disgruntled Zona is eating lunch with her friend and real estate agent, Gracie. Forced to sell her home and now penniless, Zona isn't thrilled about moving in with her mother. But her ex-husband's gambling addiction left her without another option. 

Louise knows her daughter needs time to get back on her feet, and she can't help but wonder if the new neighbor might be a new chance at love for Zona. Meanwhile, Louise is excited about a singles cruise she has been planning for months. 

KEEP READING: It's Sheila Roberts. Of course, I will keep reading. After an intriguing prologue whose theory I totally agree with, the reader moves swiftly to Zona and Gracie at lunch with a smattering of Zona's backstory worked in, followed by the introduction of Louise and her ideas of how the new neighbor might be good for her daughter. In many ways, I feel like I am in familiar territory. The cover and the back cover blurb, however, give me a sign that we are charting new paths. Looking forward to finishing this one.

COVER: Set in a mountainous forest in Idaho, this cover captures the setting and the ominous plot perfectly, with the glimmer of sun providing a feeling of hope in the darkness. The bold yellow font catches the eye. 

FIRST CHAPTER: Dot is joined by the ghost that has accompanied her for the last two months. At odds with her mother, she can't seem to pull herself away from the ranch. When the barking dogs shoot past her, Dot is alarmed by an approaching stranger. 

KEEP READING: This short chapter is filled with just the right amount of backstory to fill you in on where Dot is in her life without bogging you down and interrupting the present-day happenings. The author sprinkles in setting details, so you can picture where Dot is, and the characters introduced in the first chapter are definitely intriguing. Considering the cliffhanger, one will eagerly continue along to see what happens. Nicely done!

FIRST CHAPTER: After an intense prologue, the reader is drawn into two days in March--one where the challenges of this case against Benuzzi and his associates are discussed, and the other where Detective Kit Hanover is brought onto the team to bring Benuzzi down. 

KEEP READING: Though I doubt I'll ever be a fan of present-day storytelling, Whatever It Takes by Alan Brenham is an engaging, fast-paced thriller destined to captivate readers who enjoy the seedy side of Vegas, where rich people play for keeps and will do anything to protect their territory. I love that the chapters are on the shorter side, which gives you an easy stopping point and propels the action forward. Definitely want to see where this novel is headed.
