First Chapter Review: Staged by Caitlin Rother

Caitlin Rother sent me a digital copy of Staged, the second book in her Katrina & Goode series, for review. Since reading time has been little to none this summer, here is my review of the first chapter.

BLURB: In this thrilling sequel to Hooked, the secret leaders of a deadly cabal prove to be a veritable match for the determined reporter and the insightful surfing detective who double down to expose them.

Investigative reporter Katrina Chopin is back home in San Diego on a mission (or two). The first is personal: reheating the cold case of her parents’ murder and investigating her brother’s reported suicide. The second involves a new spate of deaths with alleged causes that just don’t smell right. She and Detective Ken Goode need each other’s help for both. But she has to keep the sexy surfer at arm’s length, because dating him is off limits. For now.

Teaming up, they make coordinated progress down each path. Digging deeper into La Jolla’s corrupt network of elites, they uncover a pattern of lies, depravity, and greed. And with every new discovery, Katrina is pulled closer to danger…and to Goode.

Sharing sexy phone calls and sunset drinks isn’t exactly following the rules, but fully crossing that line could jeopardize the case. As they start to connect the dots, they realize they must risk everything to bring down the shadowy cabal that kills to keep its secrets.

COVER: The cover for Staged is similar in style and format to the first book in the series, making it easily identifiable. I love the colors of this one.

FIRST CHAPTER: The book opens with a healthy-sized prologue whose events take place five and a half years before the first chapter. In the present day, Goode is reviewing investigative reports regarding a murder case and feeling pretty down. His relationship with Katrina is on hold while the investigation is underway. Rusty Stone, his good friend and boss, receives a troubling phone call, which ensures Goode isn't getting to the beach to unwind anytime soon.

KEEP READING: I enjoyed these characters in Hooked, so I will definitely keep reading. While the prologue is longer than usual, I'm glad I chose not to ignore it, because you will get a hint of how the past and present collide in this novel. Stone is a fun character, and I think he will remain a favorite of mine. The first chapter is a bit heavy on backstory, which slows the pace of the current-day happenings down. I still think it works nicely,  and the chapter wraps up well.

When did you begin writing?

I started keeping a journal as a teenager, but I didn’t start doing any creative writing until college.

Do you write every day or when you can sneak in time?

After typing at a computer for nearly 35 years, my body has taken a beating and doesn’t let me write as much as my brain would like, so I have to pace myself. Some days I write as much as 6,000 words, other days I don’t write at all so that my body can rest. But I am a full-time author, so even when I can’t type, I am always thinking and plotting and planning. A lot of the work I have to do to remain relevant and to be successful as an author—marketing, promotions, public speaking, podcasts, book signings--have nothing to do with writing, but they are part of the job as well.

What is this book about?

STAGED is Book 2 in the “Katrina & Goode” thriller series, which started with HOOKED. The series features surfing detective Ken Goode and investigative reporter Katrina Chopin, who work together and independently to investigate a series of murders in the beautiful, wealthy coastal community of La Jolla, starting with the deaths of two biotech executives who are developing a groundbreaking sexual enhancement drug. In this book, the investigative duo battle the romantic tensions between them as they dig into the cold-case murders of Katrina’s parents, two federal judges who were gunned down in their driveway, as well as her brother’s fatal overdose. The deeper they get into the investigation, they realize that the current string of suspicious deaths is related to the murders of Katrina’s family, and a cabal of rich white men who are up to no good.

What inspired you to write it?

I’ve been working on this series for half of my life, rewriting Book 1 countless times, although Books 2, 3, and 4 (the latter two are still under submission) came must faster. The plots are pulled from stories, people, and cases I’ve covered my 20 years as an investigative reporter and the next 20 years as a true crime author, during which I’ve been drawn to stories involving suicide, addiction, and staged murder scenes, thus the title.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

The road to publication was extremely bumpy and involved a LOT of rewriting, approaching new agents and new publishers until I finally found the right fit. During all the years that I was rewriting my novels, I wrote a dozen true crime books, which have helped inform my thrillers.

If you knew then what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

You don’t know what you don’t know until you learn what you don’t know. And because I don’t live with regrets, I wouldn’t have done anything differently because then I wouldn’t have learned what I needed to learn and I wouldn’t be who I am today. But after writing all of those true crime books, I now know my material, so the writing is coming much easier. I just hope the publishing will come easier and faster too. Time will tell.

What is up next for you?

While I wait for my publisher to decide if it is going to publish Books 3 and 4, I’ve been working on a new suspense novel that is also set in La Jolla.

Coming February 1: Hooked by Caitlin Rother

You know Caitlin Rother as an investigative journalist and true crime expert who has brought you books that I've reviewed here (Death on Ocean Boulevard, Dead Reckoning, Body Parts, and Down to the Bone). Now, experience her fiction writing as she releases the first in her Katrina & Goode thriller series, Hooked

Returning from a recent surfing trip, homicide detective Ken Goode steps into a bar and sits down next to an attractive young woman named Katrina. Their getting-to-know-you conversation is promptly interrupted by a call, and Ken learns two bodies have been discovered at the affluent La Jolla Farms neighborhood. Vacation over.

The next time they meet,  Katrina Chopin has been assigned to report on Ken's case: the mysterious deaths of a well-known doctor and his daughter for the Sun-Dispatch. As they work this case, their attraction grows, and they quickly discover that powerful people don't want this case solved.

Hooked is a superb title for this thrilling and relentless pursuit through the city's underbelly, where wealth and power lead to murder. Rother's police procedural will have you turning page after page as Katrina and Goode deliver the story from their distinct points of view. Sharing a common past, these two are unexpectedly drawn together into a world where all is not as it seems.

I can see a lot of Rother's riveting style from her true crime stories within the pages of Hooked. The main difference is that the reader must follow along with the investigation, watching it unfold piece by piece to an explosive conclusion, rather than knowing who the culprit is upfront.

If you're looking for a high-stakes detective thriller with a hint of romance, order your copy of Hooked today!

Book Review: Down to the Bone by Caitlin Rother

Lovers of true crime stories need to grab a copy of Caitlin Rother's latest, Down to the Bone

In February 2010, the McStay family--Joseph, Summer, and their two boys--disappeared without a trace from their San Diego home. With no blood and no signs of a struggle, they left behind no clues to their whereabouts.

Nearly four years passed before a motorcyclist discovered the family's remains in the Mojave Desert. Authorities focus their investigation on Charles "Chase" Merritt, Joseph's friend and a subcontractor for his business.  In June 2019, Merritt was convicted and subsequently sentenced to death. Lack of physical evidence and numerous unanswered questions left some wondering if another person got away with murder.

Rother has been one of my favorite authors for the last ten years. Her writing style, in-depth research, and balanced reporting consistently offer a look into some of our country's most riveting cases. Down to the Bone is the heartbreaking story of the McStay family, who disappeared without a trace. Originally considered a missing person's case, the detectives find their hands tied in the process. Upon discovery of their remains nearly four years later, the passing of time, controversial decisions on the part of investigators, and challenges during the judicial process make it appear possible that the wrong man might have been convicted of murdering the McStays.

The author spends time in the courtroom. She interviews as many people involved in the case as will agree to take part in her research. She pours over case documents. At the end of Down to the Bone, the reader will come to their own conclusions, which is what I truly appreciate about Rother's work. She provides the facts of a case and leaves the reader to decide.

I highly recommend Down to the Bone by Caitlin Rother to those interested in true crime stories and investigative journalism, those curious about the McStay family case, and anyone interested in an engaging account of how the justice system played out for those involved.

Book Review: Body Parts by Caitlin Rother

New York Times bestselling author and award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother returns with an updated version of her book Body Parts, now titled, Body Parts: A Serial Killer's Deadly Compulsions, more than ten years after the publication of the story of Wayne Adam Ford. This upcoming release includes shocking new details about the identity of Ford's first victim.

When Ford contacts his brother Rodney and asks him to meet him at the rustic cabin where he is staying, Rodney has no idea what is about to unfold. Wayne tells him that he "hurt some people," and begs for his brother's help. They walk into the local sheriff's office where Wayne explains to the sergeant that he doesn't want to hurt anyone anymore. The gruesome contents of his jacket pocket lead to his arrest and an investigation involving four California counties where Ford ends up being tried and convicted for the torture and murder of four women, including his first victim, who would remain unidentified for 25 years.

With Body Parts, Rother has done another impressive job of diving into a chilling true crime story. This deep dive into the mind of serial killer Wayne Adam Ford brings readers up close and personal and lets you get to know Ford's family, his victims, the victims' families and the fallout from Ford's actions, all about the detectives working the case and the attorneys involved, puts you inside the jury deliberation room, and provides new information about how an arrest in an unrelated case opened the doors for the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office to finally identify Ford's first victim.

Rother provides an unbiased account of Ford's killing spree and how the investigation unfolded from the moment Rodney and Wayne stepped into the sheriff's office. She investigates the psychology of a killer who might never have been caught if he hadn't turned himself in, and how an earlier head injury and past emotional trauma evolved into dark sexual impulses he seemed unable to control.

Body Parts is a riveting page turner from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

Book Review: Death on Ocean Boulevard by Caitlin Rother

Caitlin Rother has done it again. This Pulitzer-nominated former investigative reporter has written another gripping true crime story that will have you turning page after page.

Death on Ocean Boulevard investigates the shocking and lurid death of Rebecca Zahau, girlfriend of pharmaceutical tycoon Jonah Shacknai. Two days before Rebecca 's naked body is found with her ankles tied and her wrists bound behind her, Jonah's six-year-old son, Max, took a devastating fall while in Rebecca's care.

Though the authorities deemed her death a suicide, Rebecca's family believed she was murdered amid speculations of foul play and influence.

Rother brings the reader through new details and multiple perspectives in a sensational case that shook the Coronado community.

Wow! Rother has outdone herself this time. Drawn to this case because of its parallels to her own life, as she learned more about Rebecca's murder at the historic Spreckels Mansion, the more it haunted her. The author's attention to detail, her determination to investigate the murder from every angle, and her ability to take all that work and turn it into a fascinating narrative are all reasons I enjoy Rother's books.

There are no clear cut answers as to what happened to Rebecca Zahau, but Rother provides the reader with a fair and balanced account that allows them to make their own decision. If you like true crime stories, Death on Ocean Boulevard is a must read.

Highly recommended!

First Chapter Review: Death on Ocean Boulevard by Caitlin Rother

Investigative reporter Caitlin Rother sent me a copy of Death on Ocean Boulevard to review. I have fallen behind in my reading due to unexpected health issues, but wanted to be sure I posted something about this book as soon as I could.

BLURB: "I got a girl, hung herself in the guest house."

The call came on the morning of July 13, 2011, from the historic Spreckels Mansion, a lavish beachfront property in Coronado, California, owned by pharmaceutical tycoon and multimillionaire Jonah Shacknai. When authorities arrived, they found the naked body of Jonah's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, gagged, her ankles tied and her wrists bound behind her. Jonah's brother, Adam, claimed to have found Rebecca hanging by a rope from the second-floor balcony. On a bedroom door in black paint were the cryptic words: SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER.

Was this scrawled message a suicide note or a killer's taunt? Rebecca's death came two days after Jonah's six-year-old son, Max, took a devastating fall while in Rebecca's care. Authorities deemed Rebecca's death a suicide resulting from her guilt. But who would stage either a suicide or a murder in such a bizarre, elaborate way?

Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother weaves stunning new details into a personal yet objective examination of the sensational case. She explores its many layers-including the civil suit in which a jury found Adam Shacknai responsible for Rebecca's death, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department bombshell decision to reconfirm its original findings. As compelling as it is troubling, this controversial real-life mystery is a classic American tragedy that evokes the same haunting fascination as the JonBenet Ramsey and O.J. Simpson cases.

COVER: Love this cover. Picture of the mansion with the orange font and dark colors is perfect for the genre.

FIRST CHAPTER: Details the 911 call that lead the police to the Coronado Mansion in July 2011.

KEEP READING: Definitely. Rother has a talent for drawing the reader in. After a moving prologue, the reader is captivated by the details of the 911 call placed to the Coronado Police Department at 6:48 that summer morning, and ends with numerous questions officers must have had upon the discovery of Rebecca Zahau's body.

Book Review: Dead Reckoning by Caitlin Rother

In this updated version of Dead Reckoning, award-winning author Caitlin Rother invites the reader in to a story of a former child star struggling with gender dysphoria and his accomplices as they plot and kill a retired couple and steal their yacht. No less disturbing the second go around, Dead Reckoning remains a must read for true crime fans. You can read my 2015 review by clicking here.

Two newer issues get a fair amount of attention in the updated version: gender dysphoria and the ongoing argument over the eligibility of transgender inmates to receive surgery to alter their biological sex, and the impact of Governor Gavin Newsom's moratorium on executions in California.

Skylar Deleon's desire for gender reassignment surgery is what led him (at the time) to murder three people. Sentenced to death row, Skylar transitioned to a woman and legally changed her gender to female, potentially to obtain taxpayer-subsidized gender confirmation surgery and transfer to a women’s prison. For the victims' families, such an act coupled with delayed justice for their loved ones seems unconscionable.

Just as Rother did with the original story, she presents both sides without bias. This is a thoroughly researched story of unspeakable acts that changed the lives of many. If you are fascinated by true crime stories, you'll want to grab the latest version of Dead Reckoning.

Book Review: Dead Reckoning by Caitlin Rother

A frightening, yet fascinating story of greed, deceit, and murder can be found in Dead Reckoning.

This is a true crime investigative account by Pulitzer Prize nominee Caitlin Rother. She lays out the story of Skylar Deleon, a former child star, who along with his wife and others plots to kill a retired couple and steal their yacht.

Dead Reckoning is a chilling story. It reveals the horrible evil this world can contain. It leaves the reader wondering: are killers born or are they made? A life of abuse was all that Skylar Deleon knew. Did that turn him into the greedy, immoral person who could hatch a plot to steal the Hawkses' yacht and throw them overboard while they were still alive?

Or was it the influence of his wife, Jennifer? Was Skylar willing to do anything to please her--even murder?

I've been fascinated by true crime stories for decades, and this is one of the best told books I've ever read. Rother covers all sides to this story. The reader learns about the Hawks family; Skylar and Jennifer and their families; the detectives on the case; the attorneys on both sides of the case; the family of Jon Jarvi--another of Skylar's victims, and Skylar's co-conspirators. The end of the book includes an interview Rother had with Skylar in prison.

If you enjoy true crime, Dead Reckoning by Caitlin Rother is one book you shouldn't miss.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Do you prefer Hardcover, Trade Paperback, or Mass Market Paperback? Why?

I'm finally at a point where I am working toward catching up. Though my blogging hasn't been consistent and my time is limited, I am reading Dead Reckoning by Caitlin Rother. This was the second book from 2011 that an author had requested I review, but it never happened. Thankfully, my pile of overdue book reviews is not overwhelming, but there are still more books on it than I am comfortable with.

How many books are in your TBR pile? Are you behind on reviews?

First Chapter Review: Dead Reckoning by Caitlin Rother

The author got me a copy of this book last year because I had heard so many wonderful things about it. True crime has always fascinated me. Perhaps because I am interested in what motivates people to act as they do. I had planned to read it right away, but then my life got more chaotic than a cat dropped into the middle of a dog show.

BLURB:  Happy and retired, Tom and Jackie Hawks lived a charmed life in sunny Southern California. They were delighted when former child star Skylar Deleon and his pregnant wife Jennifer offered cash to purchase their 55-ft yacht The Well Deserved. But a trial voyage turned into a nightmare. Out at sea, the Hawkses begged for their lives as they were forced to sign everything over to Skylar. In return, they were tied to the ship's anchor and thrown overboard - alive...Skylar and Jennifer's twisted story became even more shocking when Skylar's unusual sexual motivations were revealed in court. After killing a man while out of jail on work furlough, he hired hits from prison on four witnesses, including his father...For this former child actor, the answer to "where are they now?" is Death Row.

COVER:  Spot on. A ripped from the headlines story, this cover gives the appearance of a ripped newspaper. The suspects' faces behind blood red splashed across the front and the entire back cover is just what I would expect.

FIRST CHAPTER: Dead Reckoning opens with family and friends of the Hawkses believing something must be wrong. The happy retired couple who were selling their boat so they could spend more time with their family, had not been in touch. Phone calls went right to voice mail. Emails remained unanswered. By November 23rd, family and friends began investigating.

Elsewhere, Betty Jarvi ponders her son's murder. She had not heard about the disappearance of Tom and Jackie Hawks, but her family's lives were on a collision course with the Hawkses' that she could never have imagined.

KEEP READING:  Definitely. As I said in the beginning, I am fascinated by true crimes. Rother opens with a prologue that introduces some of the people the reader will learn about in the rest of the book. It breaks my one-page prologue rule, but I have to admit I couldn't stop reading it. By the time I got to Chapter One, I had a glimpse into what would unfold later.

Rother made a wise choice in starting the book out with the family and friends who are impacted by the deaths of the Hawkses and JP Jarvi. This makes the story very personal and encourages sympathy from the reader. You get a basic amount of information on other members of the Hawkses' family and friends. The reader is also privy to how JP Jarvi was killed--not all the details, but enough to get you invested in the story.

I hope I can make room for this one in my schedule soon. I have 20 printed books I have agreed to review, so I am going in order as to how they came in. In between those are 31 books on my Kindle that need to be read. I'm not taking on any more titles until I am under 10 books total. Wish me luck!
