Interview with Sandy Nathan, Author of the Tales From Earth's End Saga

Sandy Nathan writes to amaze and delight, uplift and inspire, as well as thrill and occasionally terrify. She is known for creating unforgettable characters and putting them in do or die situations. She writes in genres ranging from science fiction, fantasy, and visionary fiction to juvenile nonfiction to spirituality and memoir.

“I write for people who like challenging, original work. My reader isn’t satisfied by a worn-out story or predictable plot. I do my best to give my readers what they want.”

Mrs. Nathan’s books have won twenty-two national awards, including multiple awards from oldest, largest, and most prestigious contests for independent publishers. Her books have earned rave critical reviews and customer reviews of close to five-star averages on Amazon. Most are Amazon bestsellers.

Sandy was born in San Francisco, California. She grew up in the hard-driving, achievement orientated corporate culture of Silicon Valley. Sandy holds Master’s Degrees in Economics and Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling. She was a doctoral student at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and has been an economic analyst, businesswoman, and negotiation coach, as well as author.

Mrs. Nathan lives with her husband on their California ranch. They bred Peruvian Paso horses for almost twenty years. She has three grown children and two grandchildren.
Her latest books are The Angel & the Brown-Eyed Boy, Lady Grace: A Thrilling Adventure Wrapped in the Embrace of Epic Love and Sam & Emily: A Love Story from the Underground, which are all part of the Tales from Earth’s End series.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I was born in San Francisco, CA. My family moved down the San Francisco Peninsula when I was eight. Where we lived was later named “Silicon Valley.” It was always a place where very bright, hard-working people lived, but when the computer revolution came, the Peninsula became super-fast and intense, a very different place than it was when I was a kid. The change did give me a chance to observe corporate life and values. I’ve used that experience in some of my writing.

In 1995, my family moved to the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara. We have horses and needed extra room for them. We raised a rare breed of horse, the Peruvian Paso, for twenty years. We bred, birthed, raised, trained, and showed our horses. After twenty years, my husband and I went into retirement mode. We have only six horses now.

My fondest childhood memory was riding my horse––I started riding when I was ten––through the beautiful redwood forests of California’s coastal range. Those rides changed my life and put me in touch with the beauty and mystery of nature, and horses.

When did you begin writing?

I’ve written all along. I’ve participated in some form of the arts as long as I can remember. I had a painting in an exhibit of children’s art at San Francisco’s DeYoung Museum when I was five!

Once I started reading and writing, that was it. I read everything I could get my hands on as a kid. The Tarzan series was my favorite. I read voraciously.

Writing came along. I wrote at school––I’ve been in school a long time, I have two master’s degrees, one in Economics and another in Marriage, Family & Child Counseling. I wrote tons of academic papers and I also wrote at work. I was an economic analyst for years and wrote many pages in that profession. My first publications were in economics.

I stared writing fiction when we moved to Santa Ynez. I had no idea that writing novels, writing as a creative art, was different from what I had done.

Boy! Was that ever a shock. I had to learn to write all over again. I was in a writing group run by a local poet for nine years, then spent two years in a group run by a professor of literature. That was a tough group! Most of the people were published authors and didn’t mind sharing their opinions. I’ve worked with a terrific editor for the last six years. She’s as straight with me about my work as the group was, but can communicate her “slash and burn” of my work graciously.

What is this book about?

The Angel & the Brown-eyed Boy is about the end of the world. An angelic girl appears on the sidewalks of NYC some two hundred years from now. Or is she a girl? She’s a dancer, for sure. She dances better than anyone at the Hermitage Academy, an elite school for the arts, has seen. She’s on a mission to save her planet. The mission requires her to find “the golden boy.” She finds him at the Hermitage.

Eliana finds Earth in a terrible state. The world has degenerated into a police state where people can be dragged out of their homes and off the streets. They’re tortured and killed; put into camps.

Ellie finds the Golden Boy. They are forced to run, with a few friends, for their lives. A nuclear holocaust will destroy all life on the planet the next morning.

The story sounds grim, and it is, but it’s also about love. Ellie and Jeremy, the Golden Boy, a tech genius trying to save the world, are star-crossed lovers. This is a romance as well as dystopian morality play. As Earth’s end nears, people try to save themselves and clear up the personal traumas in their lives. It’s a book about reconciliation and love, in addition to destruction.

What inspired you to write it?

A big question that I discuss more completely in the book’s Author’s Note. Short version is that my younger brother died tragically a few years ago. I was grieving for him, with all sorts of feelings and memories churning inside. I had a dream early one morning where a radiant golden light hovered above me in bed. The light was everything good, everything beneficent, thrilling and calming at once. It settled onto me, merging with me. I got to feel like that angelic light did for several hours.

Very soon after that, the ideas for The Angel came to me. The angel in my dream became Eliana, and the other characters arose from my experience.

I have very large spiritual experiences and have had them since I was a child, usually when something awful happens. This was one of them; my soul’s way of making sense of the senseless. Because of these experiences, I write visionary fiction––a type of fiction that has a moral core and shows at least some people choosing the good road.

Something else was floating around inside me: extreme concern over the state of the economy now. I am an economist, and all the news I’d heard at that time scared me silly. The world of The Angel is dark, and I think it’s entirely possible that something similar could happen. The historical precedent is there with the rise of the Nazis after the economic disintegration of Germany post-WWI. The Angel was my way of saying, “Wake up people and act like grown-ups. Work together for the solution of our economic woes, or what I show could happen here.” A less extreme version, perhaps, but a police state is entirely possible.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My husband!

Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

I have a terrific agent who represents me with the international rights of my books. She found me! That’s what happens if you write your truth and put it out there.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

Does anyone have a smooth journey to publication? I went the “query and reject” route for a while. We ended up forming a small press. I think we’ve done very well. My six books have won twenty-two national awards (and counting). Most have been in visionary fiction, though I’ve won in everything from multi-cultural fiction to juvenile non-fiction.

My primary reason for forming a small press was fear of death. If I’d gone the traditional route, I’d probably be dead before my work was in print. Other reasons for the independent press route concern the psychological system that the traditional publishing world is. I have an MA in counseling. We were trained in systems theory, where an entire family (or any type of organization) is taken as a whole. Who are the major players? How do they operate? Who’s the top dog? The bad kid?

In the traditional publishing world, writers end up psychological children forever. Once I saw that, it made me angry. I refuse to participate in such a system. I’m including a link to an article I wrote that fleshes this out more.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

Amazon is the best place. Here is my author’s page. You can get the print and eBook versions of everything I’ve written.

Do you have a website and/or blog where readers can find out more?

I have a website, Sandy Nathan––Writing Out of the Box. You can find all sorts of stuff there, videos of each of the books, reviews, excerpts. Info about me. I’ve even got articles that I’ve written about horses and dogs and whatever. Sign up for my newsletter, too. I very seldom send one out: just when I’ve got actual news.

Do you have a video trailer to promote your book? If yes, where can readers find it?

My website has videos about each of the books in the Tales from Earth’s End Saga. (The Angel & the Brown-eyed Boy is the first book of a three book series, all of which are out and in print and Kindle formats.) The series has it’s own blog that has all sorts of videos of the characters and about the books. There’s a great one about the whole series on YouTube. And, you can check out my YouTube channel and see vids of my books and our horses!

What is up next for you?

I have so many irons in the fire. The book we’re discussing today, The Angel & the Brown-eyed Boy, is the first book of the Tales from Earth’s End Saga. The following two books in the series, Lady Grace and Sam & Emily, are available in print and eBook forms. Readers can go directly from reading The Angel to the other two books. I’m doing blog tours with them, just like The Angel.

I’m going to write at least one more book in the Tales Saga, but it will be some time until it is completed. That’s because I’ve got two series going, the wild, futuristic sci-fi Tales and the equally imaginative, contemporary Bloodsong Series. A couple of characters from Bloodsong morph into the future and appear in Lady Grace, Tales from Earth’s End Saga II. The two series may merge in the future, or merely continue to flirt.

I need to bring the two series closer together in terms of time before writing the fourth Tales volume. That involves charging ahead with the Bloodsong Series.

Numenon: A Tale of Mysticism & Money, is the first book of the Bloodsong Series. It has been out a few years and tells what happens when the richest man in the world meets a great Native American shaman. One reviewer called it, “Bill Gates meets Don Juan.” Numenon won six national awards and was a phenomenon in its day.

I’m currently rewriting the draft manuscript of Mogollon: A Tale of Mysticism & Mayhem, the sequel to Numenon. It takes place at a Native American spiritual retreat. It’s shaping up very well and should create as much impact as Numenon did. It should be published in 2013. I’m getting ideas for Mogollon’s sequel, an ensemble piece occurring after the retreat participants return to Silicon Valley.

Book Review: The IRA on Film and Television by Mark Connelly

A fascinating look into the history of the Irish Republican Army and how it has been portrayed on film and television awaits you in The IRA on Film and Television by Mark Connelly.

With the IRA appearing in more than eighty motion pictures, it has a unique cinematic presence. Dedicated to unifying its homeland and ending British rule in Northern Ireland, this secret organization has led to the creation of films in a variety of genres starring well-known actors such as Liam Neeson, Robert Mitchum, Brad Pitt, Mickey Rourke, James Cagney, and Anthony Hopkins. Connelly, a multi-published author and teacher of literature and film, shares his wealth of knowledge with an academic style that propels the reader to want to know more.

The IRA on Film and Television is an excellent resource for students, as much as an engaging look into the portrayal of the IRA on film and television for the casual reader. Whether portrayed as a justified political hero-warrior, an evil psychopath, or a lost, lonely wanderer, this medium has given a face to members of the IRA and their struggles. The book delves into how different countries portray the IRA in films. It explores classics such as John Ford's The Informer and Carol Reed's Odd Man Out, but also more recent films such as The Devil's Own and television shows such as HBO's Boardwalk Empire.

What I found most fascinating about the book is its discussion on the history of the IRA. For someone like me with limited knowledge of the organization or the conflict, The IRA on Film and Television provided a wealth of information, in addition to giving me a reason to rethink some of the films I thought I knew so well. There are instances where the organization is not named or the focus truly isn't on the struggle as much as it is on an individual's story, so the connection might not have been clear before.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the book for me was a small portion found on pages 167 and 168, titled "The 9/11 Effect." This looks at the unintended but profound consequences that the attacks on the World Trade Center had for the IRA. The final pages of the book provide a chronology of historical events, filmography, and list of television shows.

I would highly recommend The IRA on Film and Television to anyone looking to know more about the IRA and its history, in addition to those interested in the making of films about this secret organization. The author's website, found at http://www.theiraonfilmandtelevision.com, has information that can help you learn more about the book and decide if it's right for you.

Guest Blogger: Laura Carroll, Author of The Baby Matrix (Kindle Fire Giveaway)

In the movie The Matrix, the character Morpheus offers two pills to Neo—if he takes the blue pill, he will go on with life as he has before, believing what he has always believed. If he takes the red pill, he will find out what the “matrix” really is, and many of his earlier beliefs will be shattered. When it comes to taking a hard look at a specific set of beliefs about parenthood and reproduction that has driven our society for generations, The Baby Matrix is the red pill.

We commonly think our desire to have children boils down to our biological wiring, but author Laura Carroll says it’s much more than that. Unlike other books on parenthood, The Baby Matrix: Why Freeing Our Minds From Outmoded Thinking About Parenthood & Reproduction Will Create a Better World takes a serious look at powerful social and cultural influences that drive the desire for the parenthood experience, and lays out why we need to be very aware of these influences to make the most informed decisions about parenthood.

The Baby Matrix looks at long-held beliefs about parenthood and reproduction, and unravels why we believe what we believe. It lays out:

-the historical origins of beliefs about parenthood and reproduction
-why many of these beliefs no longer work for society or were never true in the first place
-why we continue to believe them anyway
-the prices society pays as a result

The Baby Matrix shows us how we got here, brings to light what is true, which includes knowing about the powerful influence of “pronatalism,” and explains why society can no longer afford to leave pronatalism unquestioned.

“This is not a book about convincing people not to have children,” says Carroll. “I want people to be very aware of the long-held social and cultural pressures, and be able to free themselves from those pressures when making parenthood choices. This will result in more people making the best decisions for themselves, will foster a society in which those who are best suited to become parents are the ones who have children and one that knows what it means to bring a child into the world today.”

This book will make you examine your own intentions and beliefs, will rile you, and might just change your mind. Whether you are already a parent, want to become a parent, are still making up your mind, or know you don’t want children, you’ll never think about parenthood in the same way.

The Baby Matrix is a must-read for anyone interested in psychology, sociology, anthropology, parenting issues, environmentalism, and social justice. But most of all, it’s for anyone, parent or not, who reveres the truth and wants the best for themselves, their families, and our world.

Dispelling the Myths of Only Children by Laura Carroll

Imagine you have a child, and are not sure if you want to have another one. But you think you should because it’s best for a child to have a sibling, right? Wrong, say Bill McKibben and other experts. The bias against only children has an interesting history, and began in the late 1800s with psychologist Stanley Hall. He was the Victorian era’s “Dr. Spock.” He did a study of “peculiar and exceptional children” with 1,045 child subjects. “Peculiar and exceptional” was loosely defined from reasons that were psychological or physical. Forty-six out of the 1,045 (about 4 percent) were only children, which, according to him, was a “number entirely out of proportion to children generally.” He concluded that an only child is very likely to be peculiar and exceptional. Even though his study many that followed did not stand up to the rigors of good research, the idea stuck, and the conventional wisdom to this day has been that it isn’t good to have an only child.

Better studies to date say otherwise. Toni Falbo, a professor at the University of Texas and her colleague Denise Polit looked at past studies more closely. They analyzed 115 studies of only children in the U.S. across class and race from 1925 onward. The studies looked at adjustment, character, sociability, achievement, and intelligence variables. They found that only children “aren’t measurably different from other kids” except that they, “along with firstborns and people who have only one sibling, score higher in measures of intelligence and achievement.” They are no more likely to be lonely, shy, unpopular, selfish, or maladjusted than children with siblings. They also found that the “personalities of only children were indistinguishable from their peers with siblings.”  No published research can demonstrate any truth behind the stereotypes.

This needs to become more well-known so more people will consider having only one biological child. People need to see that it isn’t only all right to have one child, but it is also doing right by that child. As McKibben argues, more single-child families are necessary so that they and their parents will be more likely to live in a sustainable world.

As the book The Baby Matrix argues, parents who want to have more than one biological child need to look harder at why they feel this way. Is it because they didn’t get the gender one or both parents wanted with first one? Now more than ever, it is important for those who think they want more than one child to answer what need are they filling for themselves, and why they would put themselves and what they want first, knowing the impact of bringing another child into the world. It’s also important for them to ask themselves if their need could be filled in a way other than a second biological child. For example, how about filling that need by parenting a child who is already here? The myths about adoption need to be tackled as well.

Interview with Lindy S. Hudis, Author of Crashers (Kindle Fire Giveaway)

Lindy S.Hudis is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied drama. She is a former actress, having appeared on such television shows as “Sunset Beach” and “Married with Children”. Her romantic murder mystery, Weekends, is currently available from Lachesis Press. She is also a filmmaker, her independent short film “The Lesson”, which she wrote, produced and directed, screened at the Seattle Underground Film Festival. She is co-owner of an independent production company called Impact Motion Pictures. She and her husband Steve, a Hollywood stuntman, have just completed the screenplay adaptation of Charmaine Hammond’s best selling book, “On Toby’s Terms.”  She lives in California with her family.

Visit Lindy on the web at www.crashersbook.com.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Well, I am a wife and mother of two and I live in California. I write because I like to create worlds and characters, I guess you could say I base my stories on my life. I also own a business with my husband called Impact Motion Pictures. We have several scripts that we are producing, so I am pretty busy.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Tennessee, but I lived in NYC for a while to attend NYU, then made my way out to Los Angeles in the early 90’s to seek my fortune in the movie biz. I love California though, and have made it my home.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

Traveling with my family. I loved taking family vacations during the summer! Actually, we are getting ready to take our summer family vacation right now. We used to go on road trips to Florida and to all different places. I just remember having fun riding in the car with the family.

When did you begin writing?

I started writing as a child, really. I used to write short stories that were inspired my Judy Blume – who was a huge inspiration to me as a kid. I would also write plays and have family members play certain roles. I loved to make up stories, I just put them on paper. Writing and reading to me was my childhood escape.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

As a mom of a preschooler and a nine year old, I write when I can. Mostly when I get a quiet moment – which is hardly ever in my house, haha!

What is this book about?

Crashers is about a trio of reckless young people who get caught up in the seedy world of auto insurance fraud. They stage auto accidents to collect the insurance money. Basically, an innocent, young couple get lured into the underworld of crime due to hard times and the desperate need for quick and easy money. It is a story of love, temptation and finally, redemption.

What inspired you to write it?

I was in a minor fender bender several years ago. One of the parties involved decided to pretend that she was seriously injured and decided to sue all the drivers involved. It was a very minor accident, no injuries or damage at all. Anyway, I was so mortified that somebody would actually try to pull this kind of a scam that I decided to channel all of that anger into a story. There are dishonest people out there that are ready and willing to do anything for money, people need to be very careful.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My husband is my biggest supporter, he is my cheerleader. I think I will get him a short skirt and some pom-poms, haha!

Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

Never had an agent nor am I looking for one. Personally, I don’t believe they are really necessary. There are so many opportunities for authors to get their stories told now. Agents are no longer the gatekeepers of dreams coming true…thank goodness!

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

Amazon.com, Borders.com, www.bookdepository.com, or any bookstore.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Never, ever, ever give up! This is a game of persistence. Hang in there and never even entertain the thought of giving up! There are so many fresh stories that need to be told. Just keep plugging away, and don’t let the rejection letters get you down.

What is up next for you?

Right now I am pretty busy with our production company, Impact Motion Pictures. My husband has worked in the movie business for many years. We are in the process of producing our own films. That is taking up most of my time, along with the kids and promoting Crashers! I have lots and lots of food on my plate, but I love being busy.

EXtasy Books and Devine Destinies VBT and Kindle Fire Giveaway!

Tina Haveman is the founder and CEO of eXtasy Books and Devine Destinies. Tina was born in Europe, left there at age eight, then traveled to several countries with her parents, to finally settle in Australia for many years. She immigrated to Canada in 1973 where she has lived since.

After raising a family of five as a single mother, she finally found time to concentrate on her writing. In 2000 she started her own publishing house with a partner but became too busy with eXtasy and Devine to continue her involvement and withdrew to focus entirely on eXtasy and Devine.

Tina devotes all her time to her publishing house and authors and is grateful for the success her company is experiencing. “After many years of struggling to keep my head above water while raising five children on my own, I have much to be thankful for,” said Tina. “While the company affords me a comfortable living now and I have quite a staff aboard, I thoroughly enjoy what I do and won’t stop until someone up above tells me it’s time.”

About eXtasy Books

eXtasy Books first opened its doors December 2002 with a small website that was soon revamped into a more business like site. Within a matter of months, eXtasy outgrew that website and had to build another site to accommodate its growing catalog. Since then, the site has been revamped a number of times. Our imprint, Devine Destinies, started in 2008 to accommodate mainstream, YA, inspirational and children's books.

Since eXtasy’s birth, it has seen several upheavals, but with hard work, a loyal staff and a loyal stable of authors, eXtasy managed to survive them, along with the depression that hit our countries hard.
This past years has seen tremendous growth at eXtasy and we have moved our website to our own dedicated server to accommodate its growing readership.

We publish a wide variety of stories ranging from short stories to full books, pricing kept reasonable to accommodate our readers. Prices range from 1.59 to 5.99.

eXtasy Books has always been and is a devout supporter of e-books and e-readers. There are so many print books destroyed every year, it’s unbelievable. Go Green, is our motto. Save our forests! With so many new e-readers on the market, think about the ease of taking books along when traveling, getting rid of dust collecting books in your house, thereby making more room, being able to read a book on your phone or handheld while going to and from work on a bus or train. Think about the many books you can store on your computer. And think about the books you can hide from nosy relatives or children…

We have an attractive reward program in place. Receive 5 dollars on first sign up for an account that can be applied if you spend 20 or more dollars. For every purchase you receive 10% of your total in rewards. These rewards can be saved or you can use them when you come back to buy more books. We're always looking for new ways to make our site a great shopping experience. Come and visit us at http://www.extasybooks.com and/or http://www.devinedestinies.com
