Book Review: Is Truth Stranger Than Fiction? You Decide ... By JB Miller

Looking for a collection of short stories that explore families, relationships, career changes, deceit, and more? Is Truth Stranger Than Fiction? You Decide ... by JB Miller could be a good choice.

In the first story, "Is P,L My Half Brother?," life is upended when the father of a pre-teen leaves their mother for another woman. In "Tweeker," a young woman's desire for control displays how truly out of control her life has been. Finally, with "The Recruiter," the reader learns about a top sales person that suddenly finds himself fired. Always hoping to join his father's firm, Bill has no idea why his father won't hire him. Then he meets a recruiter, and that's when things really get weird.

Miller's Is Truth Stranger Than Fiction? You Decide ... isn't my typical read. Honestly, the cryptic book blurb is what encouraged me to request it for review. I enjoyed the first story, wasn't a fan of the second story, and thought the last one was okay. "The Recruiter" was the most intriguing and suspenseful.

These are all emotion-packed stories of humans being humans and doing messy things. They dive into harsh realities. They explore hurt and betrayal and lies. As a reader who enjoys the psychology of characters, it sounds right up my alley. I guess what it comes down to is that the narrator was overly strong in all of these. "The Tweeker" had the strongest and most unique voice. Though the story was my least favorite, the author created a character whose personality shined through and stayed consistent throughout. It's just that the point of views in all of these were shallow. I wanted less telling and more showing. I wanted to ache for the characters and what they were going through, but I didn't know them well enough.

I'm not sure what was fact or what was fiction. That's okay, because what Miller did well is show that life is a messy thing. We make choices. Sometimes they are good. Sometimes they are not so good. Sometimes we are victims of other people's choices. Sometimes there are things going on that we have no clue about, and those things impact many more people than we could ever imagine.

Explore this collection for yourself and see if you find truth to be stranger than fiction.
