Book Pack #10 Giveaway Winner
I apologize for being so late in announcing the final winner in The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway. In case you missed it, my first children's picture book, Little Shepherd, was released at the end of August. I've been tied up with book promotion tasks and promoting my current list of wonderful authors on virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book.
Okay, enough about me. Congratulations goes out to scottsgal, the winner of Book Pack #10! The winner now has 72 hours to contact me with her mailing information. If I don't hear from her during that time, I will select another winner.
Thanks to all of you who participated in this year's summer giveaway. I hope you'll be back next year.
We already have another great giveaway running now. This is for a copy of Don't Learn 4 Exams by Laura Lyseight. Click here to find out how to enter.

The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway -- Book Pack #10 (Suspense/Thrillers)
It is hard to believe, but we are coming to the end of The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway. This is the final giveaway of this promotion. I'm not even sure where summer went.
I have not had the chance to read any of these books. Three of the four belong to former clients of Pump Up Your Book. The last one I received through a different promotional event. I had hoped to read it, but alas, new books and new clients keep coming in faster than I can read. All of the copies in Book Pack #10 are ARCs. I can tell you that the three former clients--Battles, Slaughter, and Barclay, received stellar reviews when they toured in August 2009.
Book Pack #10 includes:

The Last Child by John Hart
Thirteen year-old Johnny Merrimon had the perfect life: a warm home and loving parents; a twin sister, Alyssa, with whom he shared an irreplaceable bond. He knew nothing of loss, until the day Alyssa vanished from the side of a lonely street. Now, a year later, Johnny finds himself isolated and alone, failed by the people he'd been taught since birth to trust. No one else believes that Alyssa is still alive, but Johnny is certain that she is---confident in a way that he can never fully explain.
Determined to find his sister, Johnny risks everything to explore the dark side of his hometown. It is a desperate, terrifying search, but Johnny is not as alone as he might think. Detective Clyde Hunt has never stopped looking for Alyssa either, and he has a soft spot for Johnny. He watches over the boy and tries to keep him safe, but when Johnny uncovers a dangerous lead and vows to follow it, Hunt has no choice but to intervene.
Then a second child goes missing . . .
Undeterred by Hunt's threats or his mother's pleas, Johnny enlists the help of his last friend, and together they plunge into the wild, to a forgotten place with a history of violence that goes back more than a hundred years. There, they meet a giant of a man, an escaped convict on his own tragic quest. What they learn from him will shatter every notion Johnny had about the fate of his sister; it will lead them to another far place, to a truth that will test both boys to the limit.

Shadow of Betrayal: A Jonathan Quinn Novel (Jonathan Quinn Novels)
The meeting place was carefully chosen: an abandoned church in rural Ireland just after dark. For Jonathan Quinn—a freelance operative and professional “cleaner”—the job was only to observe. If his cleanup skills were needed, it would mean things had gone horribly wrong. But an assassin hidden in a tree assured just that. And suddenly Quinn had four dead bodies to dispose of and one astounding clue—to a mystery that is about to spin wildly out of control.
Three jobs, no questions. That was the deal Quinn had struck with his client at the Office. Unfortunately for him, Ireland was just the first. Now Quinn, along with his colleague and girlfriend—the lethal Orlando—has a new assignment touched off by the killings in Ireland. Their quarry is a U.N. aide worker named Marion Dupuis who has suddenly disappeared from her assignment in war-torn Africa. When Quinn finally catches a glimpse of her, she quickly flees, frantic and scared. And not alone.
For Quinn the assignment has now changed. Find Marion Dupuis, and the child she is protecting, and keep them from harm. If it were only that easy.
Soon Quinn and Orlando find themselves in a bunker in the California hills, where Quinn will unearth a horrifying plot that is about to reach stage critical for a gathering of world leaders—and an act of terror more cunning, and more insidious, than anyone can guess.

Fear the Worst
Your daughter doesn’t come home one night from her summer job.
You go there looking for her. No one’s seen her. But it’s worse than that.
No one’s ever seen her. So where has she been going every day? And where is she now?
Tim is an average guy. He sells cars. He has an ex-wife. She’s moved in with a man whose moody son spends more time online than he should. His girlfriend is turning out to be a bit of a flake. It’s not a life without hassles, but nothing will prepare Tim for the nightmare that’s about to begin.
Sydney vanishes into thin air. At the hotel where she supposedly worked, no one has ever heard of her. Even her closest friends seem to be at a loss. Now, as the days pass without word, Tim must face the fact that not only is Sydney missing, but that the daughter he’s loved and thought he knew is a virtual stranger.
As he retraces Sydney’s steps, Tim discovers that the suburban Connecticut town he always thought of as idyllic is anything but. What he doesn’t know is that his every move is being watched. There are others who want to find Syd as much as Tim does.
But they’re not planning a Welcome Home party.
The closer Tim comes to the truth, the closer he comes to every parent’s worst nightmare—and the kind of evil only a parent’s love has a chance in hell of stopping.

Undone
In the trauma center of Atlanta's busiest hospital, Sara Linton treats the city's poor, wounded, and unlucky--and finds refuge from the tragedy that rocked her life in rural Grant County. Then, in one instant, Sara is thrust into a frantic police investigation, coming face-to-face with a tall driven detective and his quiet female partner.... In Undone, three unforgettable characters from Karin Slaughter's New York Times bestselling novels Faithless and Fractured collide for the first time, entering an electrifying race against the clock--and a duel with unspeakable human evil.
In the backwoods of suburban Atlanta, where Sara's patient was found, local police have set up their investigation. But Georgia Bureau of Investigation detective Will Trent doesn't wait for the go-ahead from his boss--he plunges through police lines, through the brooding woods, and single-handedly exposes a hidden house of horror buried beneath the earth. Then he finds another victim....
Wresting the case away from the local police chief, Will and his partner, Faith Mitchell--a woman keeping explosive secrets of her own--are called into a related investigation. Another woman--a smart, upscale, independent young mother--has been snatched. For the two cops out on the hunt, for the doctor trying to bring her patient back to life, the truth hits like a hammer: the killer's torture chamber has been found, but the killer is still at work.

The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway -- Book Pack # 9 (Mystery/True-Crime)
This summer has just flown by and we're now down to the final two weeks of The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway. Book Pack # 9 is hard for me to part with. I truly enjoyed these books; three of them are signed by the authors. I just happen to hate clutter more than I love great books. If we ever build another house, I will have one room designed with floor to ceiling bookshelves on at least two sides. Then I might have enough room.
Book Pack # 9 includes:

An autographed copy of Bob Avey's Beneath a Buried House
Tulsa Police Detective Kenny Elliot has a keen sense for the unusual. The death of a John Doe from an overdose seems like an easy case--to everyone except Elliot. He's sure there is more to it than meets the eye. His mission to discover the truth finds him deceived at every turn and makes him the target of an unknown danger.
You can read my full review here.

The second book is an autographed copy of Downsized To Death
When branch manager, Prudence Peters learns the national travel agency where she works is downsizing and she is demoted, you would think that's all the bad news she has to contend with. Put in the position of watching helplessly while news of closing branches circulates, and desperately trying to make sure her branch isn't one of them, Pru also has to worry about vying for her former job against a slew of others. As if matters couldn't get any worse, her former boss, Claudia, turns up dead, and one of Pru's employees, who is now missing, is the prime suspect. Can Pru save her job, the branch, and find a killer?
My full review can be found here.

The Last Jew Standing
This fourth installment of Simon's Detective Dan Reles series finds Dan with a new home, a new wife, a son, and far removed from the life he once had in New York. But there is no way that Dan will ever escape his past...especially when it shows up on his doorstep.
My review can be read here.
Last, but certainly not least, is an autographed copy of the true military crime novel, Murder in Baker Company: How Four American Soldiers Killed One of Their Own
After serving in Bosnia, Army Specialist Richard T. Davis reenlisted in time for the invasion of Iraq. He would make it through the bloody, savage battle known as the Midtown Massacre and return on July 12, 2003 to Fort Benning, Georgia. Richard looked forward to reuniting with his parents soon in St. Charles, Missouri.
That reunion never happened.
My review can be found here.

Delight
In this book women can find a way to celebrate life in a meaningful way. Holstein takes readers along on a journey from her lack of involvement in the Jewish faith to her complete commitment as a member of the Judaic tribe, sharing with readers the delight she discovered in the revelation that we are all connected. And at the end of a story, Holstein draws readers into her discovery by providing them musings, ponderings, and reflections on how they, too, can discover delight.
My complete review appears here.

The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway -- Book Pack #6 (A Mixed Bag)
Lest you think I am chronically late for everything, it's Vacation Bible School week around here. After months of preparation, VBS kicked off on Monday, so I scheduled all my blog posts to run, and didn't post this one. Naughty me.
I also received the galley for my first children's book, Little Shepherd, so I am a bit more strapped for time than usual.
Okay, enough with the excuses. On to this week's giveaway. Hard to believe we've crossed over the halfway point in The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway. Summer is flying by.
Book Pack # 6 includes:

One Foot Outside The Door
When Cyn's high school sweetheart and first love, Bashar Bazzi, returns many years after abruptly ending their four-year relationship, a secret is exposed. Will Cyndarella ride off into the sunset with her Prince Charming or end up back in circulation?
This is a review copy.

An autographed copy of The River, By Moonlight
On a rainy, gloomy night in April 1917, young artist Lily Canning falls to her death, drowning in New York City's Hudson River. The vagrant who jumped in to try and save her tells police he doesn't think it was an accident. As Lily's family and friends try to come to terms with her death, they question why she would consider suicide at a time when her life was finally coming together. Having lived through the loss of her beloved father and a short, but horrific marriage, Lily's first art show was coming up soon. It seems incomprehensible that she would choose to end it all now. But could she have done it? And what would this sudden loss mean to those who were left behind to go on living without her?

An ARC of Beautiful Malice: A Novel
An international sensation that The Wall Street Journal called a “publishing phenomenon,” this layered, poignant, and chilling novel of psychological suspense is the year’s most stunning American fiction debut. From its wrenching opening to its shocking climax, Beautiful Malice unfolds a haunting story in which people, motives, and circumstances are never what they seem.
Who is Katherine Patterson? It is a question she hopes no one can answer. To erase her past, Katherine has moved to a new city, enrolled in a new school, and even changed her name. She’s done the next best thing to disappearing altogether. Now, wary and alone, she seeks nothing more than anonymity. What she finds instead is the last thing she expected: a friend.
Even more unlikely, Katherine’s new friend is the most popular and magnetic girl in school. Extroverted, gorgeous, flirtatious, and unpredictable, she is everything that Katherine is not and doesn’t want to be: the center of attention. Yet Alice’s enthusiasm is infectious, her candor sometimes unsettling, and Katherine, in spite of her guarded caution, finds herself drawn into Alice’s private circle.
But Alice has secrets, too—darker than anyone can begin to imagine. And when she lets her guard down at last, Katherine discovers the darkest of them all. For there will be no escaping the past for Katherine Patterson—only a descent into a trap far more sinister . . . and infinitely more seductive.
I reviewed this one here.

The pet memoir, Dobie, The Canine Saint
Just a few days prior to a visit to his friend, Tom, Dr. Paul Greenbuam had to put to sleep his beloved canine companion. Was it any wonder that when Tom showed him the abused and neglected puppies in their dirty cage, Paul didn't want to talk about them? Tom tries to convince him to take one of the puppies, a female they had named Vicious--who was anything but that. A week later, Paul drove home with Vicious in tow. Renamed Dobie, this lovely book shares the story of her life and death, revealing her own healing process and how through that process, she healed Paul.
