First Story Review: 5 Funny Detective Stories by Benjamin Sobieck

This short story collection, which I think has been updated since I grabbed it as a Kindle freebie in 2014, contains originally five, now appears to be eight, short detective stories.

BLURB: Fans of funny detective stories, meet Maynard Soloman, gal-damn detective. Some would say he's crusty, profane and clueless. But if you ask him, he solves the world's problems one case at time. Once you experience his 1930s-style of doing business in a 21st century world, you just might agree.

COVER: Fairly basic and plain, but the bold and vibrant text draws your attention to the cover. The bonus material mention might help it sell.

FIRST STORY: After a brief introduction from the main character, Maynard Soloman, the reader is dropped into the first story, which finds Maynard sleeping in his Winnebago in the Wal-Mart parking lot when he is disturbed by a horrible racket. He soon finds himself in the middle of the war on drugs.

KEEP READING: If you are into crude talk, satire, and crotchety old men, then this might be a story collection for you. It's really not my thing. Some of the expressions and references may be deemed offensive by modern readers.

I would like to think that the author was going for an older, wisecracking detective that finds himself in the middle of idiotic and, sometimes ironic, situations. I just don't know if he hit the mark as well as he could have.

2016 BEST FICTION-Pacific Book Awards.

FROM THE FUNNY AND NATURALLY BRILLIANT DAVID LAMB, award-winning playwright of the New York Times celebrated play, Platanos Y Collard Greens, comes a modern spin on Dickens' classic tale that perfectly combines humor and romance in a story re-imagined for our digital, consumerist age. This version of Scrooge and Belle is familiar, yet unlike any you've come across before. Scrooge, or rather Scrooje, is music's biggest superstar, with one hundred million albums sold, fifteen million devoted YouTube subscribers, two and a half million Facebook likes, and twenty-five million fanatical Twitter followers known as Scroojites. Belle, is a legal shark who gulps down her opposition voraciously and whose beauty and stunning figure causes traffic accidents as she zips through the sidewalks of Manhattan stylishly adorned and taking no prisoners. They never imagined being music's most powerful couple, but that's exactly what happened when Belle fell head over heels and gave the Coke-bottle glasses wearing, plaid and stripe attired, scrawny, biggest nerd on her college campus the ultimate makeover, turning him into a fashion impresario whose style sets trends from Milan to NY Fashion Week and who can be seen courtside at the NBA Finals sporting a perfectly-fitted cashmere suit. Then it happens. Belle realizes too late that she's created a chart-topping monster as Scrooje's ego explodes and he starts acting a fool. Now, it's been three years since they ve spoken. But tonight at Hollywood s biggest red carpet event, with the whole world watching, they'll be given a second chance. Will Scrooje listen to the ghostly-advice of Marley, his best friend since the fourth grade, who at the time of his untimely drowning at his Brazilian poolside birthday bash was as big a star as Scrooje? Will Scrooje finally do right by his number one artist, Cratchit, a genius comedian, who Scrooje invariably rip offs every chance he gets? And with twenty-five million viewers tuned in will Scrooje finally shed his ego, jeopardize his image and declare his love for Belle, the one he betrayed and let slip away? Second chances don't often come around. Will Belle even give him a chance? Mixing heart, soul, bling and romance in a fresh, original satire about race, class and celebrity worship Lamb establishes himself as one of the most talented and amazing writers today. And leaves no doubt that the Pacific Book Awards chose wisely when they selected On Top Of The World as the year's Best Fiction.

Book Excerpt:

The devil doesnt wear Prada, he wears Sean John and I was the idiot who taught him how to shop.
That was what I got for reading Frankenstein in college. Id been turned into a mad scientist without even realizing it. Just my luck, I was a math major and the one literature course I took had tricked me into creating a monster.
When I first met Scrooʝe, helike most humans with XY chromosomeswas a fashion emergency. Awkwardly walking around campuslost, desperately in need of a haircut, and for some strange reason wearing glasses so big he looked like an owl hunting for prey. He was just plain pitiful.
But I have to confess, from the moment I saw him my heart sang a happy song and I couldnt look away. Something between us was magnetic.
Hey, what can I say, I was always the kind of girl who liked rescue projects. When I was eight years old, I turned my familys garage into a makeshift animal shelter, and damn near gave my father a heart attack when a hungry pack of strays rushed at him as he pulled into the driveway.
So naturally, one look into Scrooʝes sad puppy dog eyes and I felt right awayhe was the one.
Before I knew it, we were college sweethearts and best friends. Of course, I had to clean him up, but after a few months under my tutelage everyone noticed his transformation. They saw that with his gorgeous toffee skin, deliciously full lips and sexy broad shoulders he was the cutest boy on campus.  Pretty soon I had girls telling me I needed to start a makeover service.
That was how it all started. Who could have known that a simple makeover would unleash the devilish genius of the sweetest, shyest, most socially awkward boy Id ever met, and transform him into musics biggest superstar with an ego the size of Texas yet more fragile than an egg yolk? And a whole lot messier! Not me.
Without a doubt weve traveled a long crazy road together. Scrooʝe was the first boy I gave my heart to. Our relationship went from me rescuing him in college, to him rescuing me in law school, to our emergence as musics power couple. He was the artist/entrepreneur, and I was the best lawyer love could buy.
And now, were strangers. Its been three years since weve seen or spoken to each other, and sometimes, against my better judgment, I find myself thinking about him and feel a smile creep across my face.
This morning was one of those times when my thoughts turned to Scrooʝe. Normally Id tell myself off for not letting go, but today I gave myself a break. After all, it isnt every day that you might not just run into your ex, but do it live on television at Hollywoods biggest event.
“Everything’s gonna be fine, girl,” I told myself as I contemplated everything that could go wrong if we ran into each other at The Awards. I was especially dreading an untimely re-emergence of my long-standing klutz curse.
My whole life, Id been jinxed with inopportune clumsiness. As the ring girl at my parentsvow renewal, I stumbled, fell in the grass, and lost the rings. As a tiny ballerina, I was the best in my class, until the day of the recital when I went tumbling down like Humpty Dumpty.
Now with the whole world watching, I simply could not afford such an embarrassing spill.
As I sat in the back of a sleek limousine on my way to the ceremony, gazing up at the L.A. skyline, nervously checking my hair in the mirror for the dozenth time in half a dozen minutes, I tried to push down the queasiness threatening to erupt from the pit of my stomach. The last thing I needed was to step onto the red carpet covered in this afternoons lunch. The paparazzi would surely have a field day with that one.
Well, like I said it was exactly three years to the day that I stomped out of Scrooʝes life, but tonight we were both nominated for Awards. I knew God worked in mysterious ways, but now I was convinced she also had a sense of humor.
I never thought Id be nominated for anything, but life had other plans. After we broke up, I quickly discovered that the best cure for PTRS—post-traumatic-relationship-stress—was writing. By the time I finished hammering those computer keys, I was author of an award-winning, best-selling, drama-filled, tragically comic novel that Hollywood just had to have. Now here I was nominated for an Award as one of the producers of the years biggest movie.
Once word got out that I was nominated, I was immediately blessed (or cursed depending on your view) with a merry-go-round of opinions. From my hair to my makeup to my shoes to my dress, from my eyebrows to my voice, to making sure I didnt have ashy kneeseveryone had an opinion. Normally I was unflappable, but with so many people giving so many conflicting opinions I was suddenly a nervous wreck. Finally, I stopped answering the phone because I couldnt take any more unsolicited advice. If someone did manage to reach me on the phone, before they could even say a word Id say, No, I dont know what Im going to wear, and no, I dont know how Im doing my hair, before abruptly clicking off.
Unbelievable, Russell Simmons can show up without a tie and wearing sneakers, yet still be a style icon. But let a woman have one eyelash out of place and it
ll be the lead on the evening news.
Two nights before The Awards, I tried to veg out with an episode of Soccer Moms From Hell. But before I could lose myself in the drama, my cell phone buzzed with a text. Oh, come on!I yelled, throwing my hands up unnecessarily dramatically. Then I looked at it. It was from my father. He wrote simplyBe you.
At least there was one man in the world I could still count on. Two days later, on my way to The Awards I tried to wrap my head around the idea that Id soon be standing on the stage with millions watching. This was not part of the plan. I was a behind-the-scenes kind of gal, not at all attracted to the limelight. So, as I pulled up to The Awards, my nerves fluttered in my stomach like butterflies. But despite my anxiety, when I last checked the mirror I didnt look too shabby. Thank God, Michelle Obama isn’t the only one who looks perfect in a Carolina Herrera gown.
As I climbed out of the limo and walked the red carpet, waving at the crowd gathered to cheer on their favorite artists, I thought about everything that had led up to this moment and even though I was anxious on the inside, on the outside I smiled as if I werent the least bit concerned all while praying for two thingsplease, dont let me fall in front of all these people, and please, please, dont let me run into Scrooʝe.
  About the Author

David Lamb is a native New Yorker, born and raised, bitten with the writing bug since he was in elementary school and had handwriting nobody could decipher. Like Charles Dickens, David grew up a poor boy in the big city who found that the pen really is mightier than the sword. In middle school Lamb’s hero was David Lampel whose velvet voice could be heard reporting the news over David’s grandmother’s radio. Whenever he heard him on the radio, David would substitute Lamb for Lampel and pretend he was delivering the news. Sure that he was destined to be a famous reporter David was happy to go to a high school with a journalism program. Like most kids, by the time he finished high school he had a whole new career in mind. After high school he went to Hunter College and majored in Economics because he wanted to be cool like that college kid who came to speak at his last year of high school. He was an Economics major, he was dressed sharp and above-all the girls thought he was the man! So like any unreasonable high school boy fueled by overactive hormones David figured if he majored in Economics they’d think he was cool. After finishing college David went on to law school at NYU, but all the time writing was still his heart. While working as a lawyer by day, at night he transformed into a writer and eventually wrote and produced the award-winning hit off-Broadway romantic comedy Platanos Y Collard Greens. Being a writer and having the chance make people laugh out loud while challenging them to think about the world around them, and inspire each of us to believe in the power of love and our own ability to overcome life’s challenges is a great gift that David truly enjoys and thanks you for allowing him to share with you in On Top Of The World (Until The Bell Chimes).

W...W...W...Wednesdays - June 18

This meme was created by MizB at Should Be Reading. To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

As a bright season brings a fresh start to Willow Ridge, Annie Mae Knepp feels she can never make peace with the past. Her disgraced ex-bishop father is furious she has taken her five siblings to live with her. She's never been truly at home in her faith. . .or believing in herself. And Annie Mae fears no man will want to take on the responsibilities she's gladly shouldered. True, her quiet neighbor Adam Wagler has been steadfast and unshakeable helping her through her trials, but he surely couldn't think of someone so lost as more than a friend. Believing she is unworthy because of her doubts, Annie Mae will find in a moment of surprising revelation that God can work impossible miracles--and that love makes all things new.

What did you recently finish reading?

Read me...Read me...Read me and be hypnotized by me. Let your intellectual nipple be open and free so I may tickle it. You may ask yourself in reading this, "Where exactly is my intellectual nipple?" Then you may say to yourself, "Well, if I don't know where my intellectual nipple is then I guess I'm not very intellectual," and you would be right, you aren't. But the intellectual nipple is quite elusive and ironic, and it is just that last thought that may help you to discover your intellectual nipple. Cary Smith will take you on a ride down his life and mind (and it won't be as creepy as it sounds). Along the way you may giggle, you may hate, you may love, and most likely in the amount of time it will take you to read this book, you will fart...this book does not consider itself prestigious or boring enough to deny that fact. Cary Smith will guide you along the way to possibly having your intellectual nipple tickled. Brad Cruise will uninvitingly add stuff to the text and make corrections as a special guest corrector. And most importantly, your intellectual nipple will be tickled, maybe? And according to Brad Cruise, the key to finding out where your intellectual nipple is is to realize that Cary Smith is poop and a writer not worthy of the very worthy literary world which sometimes makes people very sleepy. Once you have this realization your intellectual nipple will bask in tickling pleasure. (That is, if you consider tickling to be pleasurable, because many people don't, and, in fact, many find it torturous.) Just a warning from this summary: if you do find out where your intellectual nipple is (as everyone's intellectual nipple is not in the same place), it is recommended that you not tickle it too much unless you've had a few cocktails. If you just read this summary and said, "What in the hell?" then you are on your way to a discovery of the elusive intellectual nipple. This summary has exhausted itself and is tired of saying, "The elusive intellectual nipple." Please enjoy The Book, hate it very, very much, or go somewhere in the middle with your opinion of it.

The Devil never sleeps, but believers can arm themselves with weapons to guard against his scheming ways. In this guide, Pastor Jermaine Gadson reveals how Satan stops at nothing to keep God's people from reaching their potential in Christ. The Devil will use any tool he can, like temptation, seduction, fear, guilt, and shame to prevent people from walking in victory.

If you have family or friends who are not born again, this resource can help you identify schemes that the enemy may be using to keep them from being saved. It also seeks to answer vital questions you may have:

- What methods are the Enemy using to keep Christians from fulfilling their destiny?

- What are the characteristics of a false prophet or false teacher?

- What strategy is Satan employing today that has subtly crept into the church, unbeknownst to many Christians?

Learn who the enemy is, what he has done, what he is doing, and what he'll keep trying to do in order to steal souls that belong to God. Whether you're a Christian leader, an everyday believer, or someone who wants to move closer to the Lord, you can be inspired to fight back with Tactics, Trends, and Traits of the Enemy.

He is the author of the Stranded In Time series of science fiction novels, including Pirates of the Storm, The Corpornation, and the upcoming third installment, Timeless. He has resided in San Antonio ever since and now lives in sin with his girlfriend and their 4 cats (the sin being strictly with the girlfriend, not the cats).

Connect & Socialize with Fletcher!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Fletcher Best is a pen name composed of my real middle name and my real last name, which I think provides a demonstration of my incredible creativity. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and lived there until age 20 when I went to chiropractic school in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from chiropractic school, I moved to San Antonio to start my practice, and I’ve lived there ever since. I currently maintain a part-time chiropractic practice in addition to administering a website that assists people suffering from sciatica, and of course I write and have published a science fiction series as well as a growing number of humorous fiction books.

Where did you grow up?

I did not grow up.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

Various times boating, fishing, and snorkeling in the Florida Keys.

When did you begin writing?

I believe it was in kindergarten when I first learned to write the letters of the alphabet. It was much later in life when I first started writing books. I’ve written fiction for my own enjoyment off and on from my teen years on, but I have only started publishing my work in the past couple of years.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I usually write during the day, but I have been known to write at night, sometimes into the early morning hours.

What is this book about?

About 200 pages. Kidding… it’s only 194 pages. Actually, The Eight Fingered Fiend of Lake Porker is about the good, the bad, and the ugly people and happenings of a small town inTexas. The title refers to Octavio, a giant freshwater octopus that was secretly bred by Dr. Helga Braun, who runs the local fish breeding facility. Dr. Braun is a brilliant but desperately lonely woman who, through accident more than intent, has taken Octavio as her lover and trained him in the ways of pleasure. The amorous octopus becomes a problem when he periodically escapes into the lake and unleashes his ample sexual skills on unsuspecting swimmers. The reports of the lake monster attract the attention of not only local law enforcement, but also a pair of documentary filmmakers out to make their next hit cable television special. But Octavio is but a thread that winds through the tapestry of secrets that is Lake Porker. There’s illicit affairs, astral projection, methamphetamine distribution, election fraud, a recreational sex dungeon, violence, and even the occasional murder - so there’s something for everyone in The Eight Fingered Fiend of Lake Porker!

What inspired you to write it?

My favorite books to read are absurd works of humorous fiction with outlandish characters and events, such as those of Christopher Moore. I wanted to write something fun and outrageous for people to hopefully enjoy as much as I’ve enjoyed his work.

Who is your biggest supporter?

Probably my father, although my girlfriend has been very supportive as well.

Are you a member of a critique group? If no, who provides feedback on your work?

I am not yet a member of a critique group, but it is something I’ve considered. I get some feedback from friends and family, but to be honest, I actually get most of my feedback from actual readers by doing “soft” releases of my books made available for free on Smashwords and utilizing the free promo periods on KDP select. I know that’s not the recommended way of doing things, but I think getting feedback from strangers is more reliable than getting it from people who know me.

Who is your favorite author?

I mentioned Christopher Moore previously and he’s probably my favorite. Close in the running would be Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry.

Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

I do not have an agent and I haven’t really given any thought to getting one so far.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

I am self-published, so the actual act of publishing was pretty easy (although getting the ebook files to pass all of the Smashwords formatting checks drove me even crazier than I already was!). What has not been easy is getting discovered by readers and learning the ins and outs of marketing and publicity methods that are within my means at this time.

If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

Probably not. I started publishing my work with a long-term view of things. I’m gradually being discovered and each new book is an opportunity to grow both in terms of improving my writing and in terms of building a fan base.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

It’s currently available in print from Amazon and other online retailers. It is scheduled for release on Kindle, Nook, and all other major ebook formats on March 26, 2014 and those formats can be pre-ordered from Smashwords and other large ebook distributors .

What is the best investment you have made in promoting your book?

The best investment has probably been writing a couple of prequel books (Sniffing Out Stink Ape and The Great Chupacabra Kerfuffle) and distributing them as free/inexpensive lead-ins to get people familiar with my work and interested in The Eight Fingered Fiend. I did some Facebook Ads directing people to the prequels when they were on the promo periods for KDP Select so that when the new book comes out, Amazon will supposedly send out email advertisements to everyone who downloaded the prequel books. I’m not sure what the end result will be, but I’ve had a good number of downloads of the prequel books and have received some very favorable reviews, so I’m hoping for a good turnout when The Eight Fingered Fiend of Lake Porker is released on Kindle.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Do the best work you can and when you have done the best work you can, take the next step and get it published. Don’t sit on it and wonder if it’s good enough. Get it out there and let the readers decide – they’ll let you know if it’s good or not!

What is up next for you?

I’m nearing completion of a book tentatively titled, Timeless, which is the third book in my science fiction series, Stranded in Time. It should be ready to be released sometime the middle of this year. I’m also putting together ideas for another humor fiction book that will be a new story, but loosely tied to The Eight Fingered Fiend of Lake Porker. Since I have more fun writing the humorous stuff, I’ll probably stick with that more from here on out, but I’ll probably do the occasional sci-fi as well.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I’d just like to say thank you for the opportunity to expose myself to your readers. I’m going to go put my pants back on now.

Interview with Larry Brill, Author of The Patterer (Giveaway)

Larry Brill spent 25 years as a TV news anchor and reporter, picking up numerous awards along the way. After leaving the business in 2000 to set up a video and marketing consulting business, Larry penned his first novel, Live At Five, a gentle lampooning of the TV news business. His second novel The Patterer, carries the same theme back in time to explore how today’s news clichés might play to an 18th century London theater audience.

Visit the author at www.larrybrill.com

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Born in San Jose, CA, I stayed close to home and got a Journalism degree from San Jose State University before spending the next 25 years as a TV news anchor and reporter in four states. My last stint was at the NBC affiliate in Austin, TX where I decided I liked the town enough to stay here. I left broadcasting to start my own video production and marketing firm.

What made you become a writer?

I can’t think of a time when I wasn’t telling stories or writing in one form or another-- high school newspaper, college, all those years as a journalist. As a kid, I wrote my first long story in a Big Chief tablet. It was a total rip-off of the Hardy Boys.

Can you tell us about your latest book?

The Patterer is a very funny story that imagines what it would be like if a common street performer with uncommonly gifted pattering skills in 1765 London decided to create a “news performance” that anticipates today’s TV newscasts. It’s like Monte Python meets Charles Dickens.

The hero, Leeds Merriweather, wants to be taken seriously as a journalist but doesn’t have the resources to publish his own newspaper. After a chance, drunken encounter with Ben Franklin, he’s inspired to hire a zany cast of characters to create the news performance. becoming history’s first celebrity newscaster.
This is just my way of poking fun at the clichés of today’s TV newscasts using a historical setting.

What inspired you to write it?

I was reading Eric Burns’ book on the history of journalism in America. Early on, when he traces its roots back to Europe, he had one short paragraph that mentioned the existence of these fellows called “Patterers” who would stand on the street corner and deliver bits of news.

With my 25 years experience as a TV news anchor it was a simple leap for me to imagine a character and a storyline that took the concept to absurd extremes. Once I created the hero, Leeds Merriweather, he took over and told the story himself. I just took dictation and published it.

What is one thing you hope readers will take away from this book?

Actually two things. First, news people today, especially on the local level, take themselves way too seriously. At the end of the day, what they do is entertain the audience.

The second thing is that the stuff that professionals call news has not changed one iota over the centuries. Only the technology to deliver it has changed.

Where can readers buy The Patterer?

Amazon or our local independent bookstore in Austin.  I always encourage supporting independent bookstores and the IndieBound network. You may purchase online.

If you could meet any writer (living or dead) who would it be?

There are so many who would be battling it out for a spot on my top ten list. This may seem like too pat of an answer, but I would start with Hemmingway. He isn’t necessarily my favorite author, but his life experiences would make him a natural choice for someone with whom I’d like to sit down, share a bottle of wine and swap stories.

What is one fact about yourself you wish to share with our readers?

Since humor is the engine that drives my stories, I would reveal that I was once the official “Worst” writer in America. Every year the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest holds a tongue-in-cheek competition to intentionally write the worst opening sentence to an imaginary novel. It’s based on the opening line that Snoopy made famous “It was a dark and stormy night…” Bulwer-Lytton gets upwards of ten thousand entries each year and I won the contest more than a decade ago. So my goal as a writer now, with two novels out, is to reach the bestseller list and stake the claim that I went from worst to first.

What is up next for you?

I’m plotting a sequel to The Patterer that brings our hero to America in time to witness and comment in his irreverent way on the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.

In the meantime, I’ve been kidnapped by a story that is trying to write itself. If you could go back to high school and change one thing, would you and what would that be?

That story line has been beaten to death, but always involves some mystical happenstance or encounter with a time machine. My thought is what if someone was obsessed with wanting a “do-over”, but at age 50+ doesn’t have access to time travel? How far would he go to recreate his senior year of high school?

Is there anything you would like to add?

Nope. It’s best not to get me started lest we be here all day.

Enter for a chance to win a copy of The Patterer. Use the Rafflecopter form below. Good luck!

Book Spotlight: It's Nut Cuttin' Time America! By Patrick Dorinson

Sometimes serious, at all times humorous and filled with satire, It’s Nut Cuttin’ Time is written by someone who just doesn’t comment on politics from the bleachers, but who was actually in the arena for over 25 years.

It’s Nut Cuttin’ Time is an insightful look at the last four years in America and sets the stage for the pivotal 2012 election and what is to come afterwards. It takes aim at the preening politicians of both parties and also takes a swing at our self-indulgent celebrity-obsessed pop culture.

PURCHASE AT AMAZON AND BARNES AND NOBLE!

Patrick Dorinson is a modern day Will Rogers with sharp elbows who’s had an insider’s view of the political system having been on both sides of the aisle and as he likes to say, “in the aisle itself”.

He now is a proud independent and paraphrasing the words of Marx-Groucho not Karl-says he will not join any political party that would have someone like him as a member.

His unique political journey has been a search for real leaders, regardless of party, to move America forward but says in frustration, “I have chased more false prophets than the ancient Hebrews in the Old Testament”.

He says he is still searching and doesn’t expect the 2012 election will end his search.

Patrick Dorinson is a veteran of the political wars, radio talk show host and commentator who unlike many so-called pundits, has actually been in the arena and has the battle scars to prove it. He has been on both sides of the aisle and in the aisle itself, having worked over the last 25 year for Republicans and Democrats in both politics and government.

He now is a proud independent and paraphrasing the words of Marx-Groucho not Karl-says he will not join any political party that would have someone like him as a member.

Patrick’s unique political journey has been a search for real leaders, regardless of party, to move America forward but says in frustration, “I have chased more false prophets than the ancient Hebrews in the Old Testament”.

He is still searching and doesn’t expect the 2012 election will end his search no matter who wins.
After all these years, he has returned to where he began his political odyssey at age 12 as a Goldwater Conservative. Like Goldwater, Patrick believes in limited government in all things and the basic right of all Americans to live their lives as they see fit as long as they abide by the laws of the land. Or put another way, government should keep their hands off the public’s wallet and their nose out of folk’s private lives.

Patrick Dorinson is a modern day Will Rogers with sharp elbows who’s had an insider’s view of the political system and tells it like it is.

Patrick’s cowboy wisdom will make you laugh, make you cry, and most of all, it will make you think. If you’ve had enough of the bloviating blowhards who won’t admit how America got into this mess, or explain how we’ll get out of it, this return to simple common sense is needed now more than ever.

Summer Reading: Sunstruck by Mayra Calvani

Daniella is an architecture student living with her narcissistic artist boyfriend in San Juan. Abandoned by her father at an early age, Daniella always falls for the ‘wrong’ type of man. Her most enduring male relationship so far has been with her cat.

Several strange mysteries are threaded through Daniella’s everyday life: her ex-husband, Ismael, has just opened an outlandish hotel for animal lovers that has her distraught; Ismael’s wife, a rich woman Daniella fondly refers to as ‘Lady Dracula’, has some gruesome ways to keep her skin looking young; Daniella’s mother is founding a revolutionary, feminist society called The Praying Mantises; the island’s national forest is being depleted of hallucinogenic mushrooms; meanwhile, young girls are disappearing and there’s a nut loose dressed as Zorro slashing the rear ends of women who wear miniskirts.

Oppressed by all these eccentric characters, Daniella feels herself falling into an abyss. Then something terrible happens, making Daniella wake from her stupor and take charge of her life.

What reviewers are saying…

“Dark and quirky humor coupled with quixotic characters adds to the surprising mix found in Sunstruck… I've never read a book remotely like it. Everything from the humorously weird to the acutely macabre can be found between these covers, and then some.” –Laurel Johnson, Midwest Book Review

"Sunstruck is like a nutty Whodunit with a little twist. Who really is in the Zorro costume? With all the crazy characters I caught myself pointing fingers again and again. A great read that will make you forget where you are, while you giggle yourself to complete oblivion from all the silliness." Autumn Blues Reviews

Guest Blogger: Natalie Wexler, Author of The Mother Daughter Show

At Barton Friends a D.C. prep school so elite its parent body includes the President and First Lady - three mothers have thrown themselves into organizing the annual musical revue. Will its Machiavellian intrigue somehow enable them to reconnect with their graduating daughters, who are fast spinning out of control? By turns hilarious and poignant, The Mother Daughter Show will appeal to anyone who's ever had a daughter - and anyone who's ever been one.

The Fun and Challenges of Writing Satire by Natalie Wexler

There’s no question that writing satire is fun. All those biting observations you’ve kept to yourself about the little foibles and hypocrisies that inevitably surround you, all those jokes you’ve made to your closest friends … now you get the chance to reveal them to the world.

The challenge is in making sure that instead of recoiling in horror, or lashing back out at you, the world will find your jokes and observations as funny as you do. Of course, no matter what you do, there’s no guarantee that everyone is going to be amused. A sense of humor is a very subjective thing.

But I think one rule of thumb is to do your best to ensure that you’re laughing at yourself as much as you’re laughing at anyone else. I certainly tried to do that when writing The Mother Daughter Show. It’s set in a milieu—an elite private school—that I was very much a part of, and of course I was a participant in the actual show that inspired the book (a musical revue written by mothers of graduating senior girls). Like one of my main characters, throughout my kids’ school years I found myself volunteering, or getting drafted for, various roles in the Parents Association, even serving as co-president of the upper school one year. Like another character, I sometimes yearned for control of the rather messy process of planning the show. And like the third, I got so caught up in writing funny song lyrics that I kept churning them out even after it was pretty clear they weren’t going to be performed on stage. Throughout these experiences, I had one eye on the absurdity of the situation, and that’s the eye I relied on in writing the book.

Of course, to make the book funny, I had to exaggerate. Rarely does life hand you ready-made satire. And that’s where things can get tricky. A couple of early readers of the manuscript advised me to make my satire broader, to make my characters more extreme. They thought it would make the book funnier.

But it was always my intention that while my characters would be flawed—after all, there’s no humor without flaws—they would also be three-dimensional and fundamentally sympathetic. I wanted my book to be a satire with a heart, one in which a reader could identify with every character while at the same time finding her amusing.

Maybe some would have found a broader satire funnier, but I don’t think I’m one of them. To my mind, broad satire works best in small doses. It’s very hard to sustain over the length of a novel. And as a writer—and a reader—if I’m going to spend as much time with a character as you do in a novel, it has to be a character who seems human.

I also was aware of the possibility that, even though my characters truly are fictional, there were going to be some people out there who would think they recognized themselves or others in my book, given that it was inspired by an actual event. In fact, that has happened, and some outrage has been expressed over the way I’ve supposedly portrayed real individuals. I can only imagine how much greater the outrage would have been had the characters been rendered with less sympathy in an effort to get a bigger laugh.

Natalie Wexler is the author of The Mother Daughter Show (Fuze Publishing 2011) and an award-winning historical novel, A More Obedient Wife. She is a journalist and essayist whose work has appeared in the Washington Post Magazine, the American Scholar, the Gettysburg Review, and other publications, and she is a reviewer for the Washington Independent Review of Books. She has also worked as a temporary secretary, a newspaper reporter, a Supreme Court law clerk, a legal historian, and (briefly) an actual lawyer. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband.

Sunstruck by Mayra Calvani--Book Review

What do a naive and deeply sensitive college student, a modern-day Zorro who goes around slashing the rear ends of women in mini-skirts, a smug and selfish artist with a love of LSD, an ex-husband with his eye on revenge, a woman who collects torture devices, and a socialist--maybe communist--best friend who is in love with a priest, have in common?

They all live in steamy San Juan, Puerto Rico and they can all be found in Sunstruck, the latest release from talented author Mayra Calvani.

I've read several books by Calvani, but nothing could have prepared me for what I found in Sunstruck. Realizing how difficult satire can be to pull off, Calvani's witty prose captured me right away and kept me turning the pages.

Written in third person present--a challenge in and of itself--Sunstruck tells the story of Daniella, a college student studying architecture, who is trying to find her place in the world while surrounded by the most bizarre individuals.

From Tony, her live-in boyfriend whose obsession with LSD is only equal to his hatred for Daniella's cat, to Daniella's ex-husband who is married to a woman better known as Lady Dracula because of her gothic appearance and strange collection of torture devices, the further into this book you get, the stranger they all become. Just when you think you've got the situation figured out, you discover you're not quite there yet.

Calvani has taken human nature and put it under a microscope--a warped and slightly cracked microscope.

The chapters are short enough that you can read several in one sitting, but you won't be able to put the book down anyway. I was a bit cool on the cover art, but it captured the essence of the book well, and the cat on the back is absolutely gorgeous.

Proving once again that she is a master storyteller in multiple genres, Sunstruck by Mayra Calvani is both witty and brilliant.

Author Spotlight: James Earl McCracken and Rue De la Pompe

About the book: Celebrating his thirtieth birthday alone in Paris, American businessman Michael Whyte realizes that it’s entirely possible to live an unglamorous life in the most glamorous city in the world. But an unexpected gift of formal wear followed by a party invitation from his eccentric neighbors lands him in a curious search for the first French franc—a coin said to be incredibly valuable and wickedly dangerous.

Guided by a deaf-mute and mentored by an epistemologist, Michael careens across the city in his quest for the coin. From the Chateau de Vincennes and the Musée d’Orsay to the sewers of Paris and the base of the Eiffel Tower, he braves the city for an answer to the perplexing question of the franc’s true nature.

Assisting, thwarting, or simply confusing him along the way is a bizarre collection of lunatic personalities, including a Castilian hit man, a Zen Buddhist Swiss jeweler, a flatulent statue of Benjamin Franklin, a foul-mouthed rhinoceros, the Concierge from Hell, and an enigmatic beauty named Chione.

Unforgettable characters and vivacious details make James Earle McCracken’s debut novel sizzle with expectation. Both hilarious and introspective, Rue de la Pompe is a fast-paced ride through the City of Lights with a hapless American who is caught in an exhilarating journey of discovery.
