She squinted at the sudden glare of sunlight.

Her gaze traveled up the barrel of the pistol to the burning coal black eyes of the gunman. The staccato drumming in her chest told her to scream, but the scream never vocalized, instead her lips parted in a welcoming smile. She knew those haunted eyes.

The man took one look at her face and groaned. “What are you doing here?”

River’s long hair had been braided and pulled back, but the black eyes over the bandanna were unmistakable.

She put a hand to her chest. “Me? What are you doing? I thought you were joking about robbing a stage, Ri...”

He put a gloved finger to her lips with a caress. “Uh-uh, no names.”

All through their exchange Mrs. Hazelwood shrieked like a banshee behind her.

“Put the gun away. You’re scaring her.” Abby tilted her head and gave him a faint pleading smile.

River’s eyes narrowed. “I’m robbing this stage. I really don’t think your request is possible.” He shook his head. Almost scolding he said, “I thought you were going home. I thought you’d be safe. How are you going to protect yourself? What if someone...”

She raised her brows. “Robbed my stage?”

“You know this man? You knew he was robbing this stage, and you said nothing?” Mr. Hazelwood accused.

“I hardly thought he was serious. And certainly didn’t know he’d pick this one.”

“Then you’re an accomplice.” The man rudely pointed his finger at her.

“Just because I happen to know the perpetrator does not mean I am part and parcel to this stick up!"
