First Chapter Review & Giveaway: Shifta by Miles Joyner

Today, I am featuring a First Chapter Review of the technothriller Shifta by Miles Joyner. The author is on tour with Partners in Crime Tours.

BLURB: An act of domestic terrorism during a cultural parade in downtown D.C. inflicts multiple casualties, including the life of a young Congressman, and law enforcement agencies are quick to conclude it was carried out by a mentally ill lone wolf manipulated by a chatbot.

Executive protection specialist Yemi Uzunma survives the attack and suspects it may be connected to an online prediction market widely thought to have been shut down called the Bazaar. He launches his own investigation into a mysterious, ideologically motivated assassination broker not only for the safety of his CEO sister's clientele at Raptor Security but also for the preservation of order in a region facing a sudden spike in violence directed toward the power elite who call it home.

Shifta is the second book in the Bazaar series of novels that follows the security contractor Raptor as it deals with the ramifications the prediction market has on the political celebrities of the capital region.

COVER: Shifta's deep red cover is similar to the black cover for the first book in the series. The background color contrasts nicely against the dark, hooded figure. The OCR-A type font of Joyner's pays homage to the technothriller genre.

FIRST CHAPTER:
After a brief personal interaction that drops the reader right into the action, the chapter shifts to DC's Chinatown, where protestors are disrupting the Lunar New Year parade while Mayor Adams is speaking. Yemi and his team are tasked with keeping everyone safe, and when things swiftly change, Yemi and the team leap into action.

KEEP READING: Like Joyner did with the first novel of this series, he drops the reader right into the action, so that gets a thumbs up from me. I loved the glimpse into this character's world before the plot shifts to Yemi, Karen, and the team. The parade scene is chaotic, at best, which only heightens the tension for the characters and the reader. The first chapter ends strong, encouraging me to continue. Nice job!
