What Lies We Keep by Janet Roberts is a contemporary domestic suspense novel. The author is on tour with Partners in Crime Tours.
BLURB: Cyber security expert, Ted McCord, has been fired. He risked everything in a game far beyond his control.
Charlotte McCord never understood her husband’s addiction to the trappings of corporate life - the titles, the money, the promise of visible success he sees as opposite his Montana upbringing. Ted uncovered an embezzlement scheme, did something unthinkable to gain a promotion, and hid his actions from his wife. Then the guilty co-conspirators turned the tables on him. Charlotte leaves, taking their daughter. As Ted works to clear his name, Charlotte leans on her friends. But one friend’s secret shocks Charlotte, upending everything she believes about Ted. Unsure who to trust, she jettisons from hurt and anger to the tempting promise of solace in the arms of a handsome River Rescue officer.
Stretching from Pittsburgh’s urban skyline to the beautiful ranch country of Montana, What Lies We Keep is a moving story of corporate ambition that shakes the very foundations of a marriage and asks: What happens when we embrace the life we think we should have rather than the life we have?
FIRST CHAPTER: After another restless night, Ted awakens early and gets to work. Charlotte rises, and the tension quickly escalates. She wants to be on the ranch in Montana. Ted wants to stay where he can make a good living. Tonight is marriage counseling night, so he can't be late coming home from work. Another one-sided affair where Ted feels outnumbered, he's losing track of the lies he's told to keep his life together.
KEEP READING: Roberts drops the reader right into the middle of the McCords' daily life, quickly showing the reader that this marriage is holding on by mere threads. While we are not sure what Ted has gotten himself into or the true reason why Charlotte is so eager to move back to Montana, it is clear they have different dreams for the future. The backstory hints that Ted didn't have an easy life before taking this job in Pittsburgh, and at this point, the reader has to decide how much she is going to like or trust Ted as she makes her way forward. This first chapter has whetted my appetite, making me want to know how we got to the present day. I'm not a fan of Ted right now, but that could change as his story unfolds.
