The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway -- Book Pack # 4 (MG/Tween/YA Pack)

The fun continues in The Book Connection's Summer 2010 Book Giveaway. This week we'll have two giveaways, but I'll post about each separately to avoid confusion. Since I'm a date late in getting this posted, the deadline will move from Saturday to Sunday this week.

Good luck!

Book Pack # 4 includes:

Three of these books were some of my favorites that I reviewed this year over at The Children's and Teens' Book Connection (TC&TBC).

Martha and Chip is a fun fantasy adventure novel that involves White Magi, dragons, and magic. Martha and Mabel, are two bored magi because peace has reigned for so long in the kingdom of Crabbapple. Then they discover that all the White Magi have disappeared except them, and they need to save them from the witch Aylis.

This book was written by Katharine Sohler, a 19-year-old homeschooling graduate, who is currently a student at John Paul the Great Catholic University. You can read my review here.

I've read several titles from Chronicle Books, but Noonie's Masterpiece by Lisa Railsback is the best. It tells the story of tells of Noonie Norton, a ten-year-old aspiring artist who is stuck living with her Aunt Sylvia, Uncle Ralph, and annoying Cousin Junior. Her mother died when she was in kindergarten and Noonie’s father is an archaeologist. Rather than take Noonie along on his many digs, the stability of a regular family life is what her father believes is best for Noonie.

Problem is, Aunt Sylvia, Uncle Ralph, and that annoying cousin of hers can’t possibly understand Noonie’s genius. So Noonie wanders through different periods of her life trying to make it the best she can, sure that she’ll be discovered at any moment.

When Noonie hears of her school’s art contest, she’s determined to win first place, even if Sue Ann Pringle wins everything. Maybe then, Noonie’s dad will come home pronto.

I'm really not a big reader of fantasy novels, but sometimes I come across something that sounds interesting and I give it a whirl. Such was the case with The Sapphire Flute by Karen Hoover.

In the midst of a volcanic eruption miles outside of her village, Ember discovers she can see magic and change the appearance of things at will. Knowing her mother’s strong feelings against magic, Ember leaves home against her mother’s wishes so that she can attend the mage trials. Ember is kidnapped before she arrives, and in trying to escape, she discovers she has inherited her father’s secret--a secret that will put her in harm’s way.

At the same time, Kayla is given guardianship of the Sapphire Flute. The evil mage C’Tan has been searching for the flute for decades, and the sound alone is enough to call her. Kayla must find the flute’s birthplace in the mountains high above Javak.

The girls’ paths are set on a collision course…and C’Tan will do whatever it takes to keep them from fulfilling their destiny.

This is an excellent young adult fantasy novel, the first book in The Wolfchild Saga. The copy of this included is an ARC. You can read my full review here.

And finally, here is a book that I haven't read, but which has an award-winning book written by a father and twin daughter team. The Strand Prophecy by J.B. B. Winner is a science fiction epic set in the present day. The book opens on the steps of the White House, but moves through the jungles of Brazil and the deepest regions of Africa.

Strand, a reluctant superhero delivers evidence of an ominous scientific discovery to the president and the world... The very nature of life on earth is about to change and humanities fate hangs in the balance.

Strand must protect the innocent and warn the world about the rapidly evolving predatory creatures, before its too late.

I've held onto this ARC in the hopes that I could make time to read it. I had never read a graphic novel before, and when it came out, graphic novels were picking up speed. I want some wonderful reader who is interested in this type of novel to have the advantage of reading it, so I have agreed to part with it.

The retail value os Book Pack #4 is $61.84!
