Who Says Americans Don't Read?

According to Book Business Magazine, a recent survey performed by the National Endowment for the Arts indicates there has been an increase in the overall rate of adult readers of literature. The 2008 National Endowment for the Arts Survey of Public Participation in the Arts shows a seven percent increase in the overall rate of adult readers since 2002. This survey began in 1982 and is taken every five years.

Doumented findings show that the young adults category (18- to 24-year-olds) experienced the most significant increase at nine percent and that for the first time in the survey's history literary reading increased among men and women.

Publishers are taking advantage of the increase in Young Adult readers by gearing even more books toward them. Can't blame them.

I think it's great that someone is finally publishing something positive about the industry for once. I wonder how much the increase has to do with the quality of the books being produced these days - and the cost of other forms of entertainment? It's pretty sad when it's much cheaper to wait and buy the dvd at full price than see the movie in the theater.

Oh, well, whatever the case may be, I'm encouraged by the findings. Literacy rocks.

I wish I could find this newspaper article I read the other day but it says the nationwide average of readers had gone up this past year. I was so happy to read that. And according to what you have reported, young adult is alive and thriving. Really happy to hear that! More people reading is a great thing!

I agree, Dorothy. Especially when it starts from the lower level, age-wise. I like the idea that in the age of Wii and Guitar Hero, our kids are actually spending quality times with books. Somebody needs to high-five their parents. Good job!
