Book Review and Giveaway: The Ambitious Barrister and the Maid by Marianna Green

If you like your historical romance on the steamy side, then The Ambitious Barrister and the Maid by Marianna Green might be what you're looking for.

Having lost everything, Sarah-Ann must find work to support herself and her brother Jim. She ends up as a junior housemaid for an ambitious barrister named Alfred Grand.

Though her work is tough under the critical eye of Mrs. Carr, she catches Mr. Grand's eye. Sarah-Ann and Alfred enter into a practical arrangement where he pays her to be his mistress while he searches for a rich widow to marry and save his house from financial ruin. It's not long, however, before they develop deeper feelings for one another. So, when Alfred begins suffering from a mysterious illness, Sarah-Ann is eager to investigate.

The Ambitious Barrister and the Maid is a quick and easy read. It's the typical formula of two people getting together for a physical relationship, but then falling in love. It's a popular theme in romance, and it's always interesting to see each author's take on it. Especially in the beginning, there is a lot of bedroom time, but it does lessen up some as Alfred's mysterious illness evolves.

At fewer than 100 pages, there's not a ton of room for plot development, which is probably why the mystery was a bit lacking for me. I would have liked to see a couple more twists and turns before the culprit and reason came to light. My preference also would have been to end the story once Sarah-Ann and Alfred settled the status of their relationship instead of wrapping up all the character's lives at the end and giving the reader a glimpse into the future. Dragging it on weakened what was a satisfying ending.

That said, this was a fun read and I'm glad to have indulged myself in this steamy historical novella.

EXCERPT

The man’s eye fell on me. I would have liked to think that he was wholly moved by pity at the sight of the tears welling in the eyes of the scrawny creature that I then was. There was indeed a spark of sympathy in his, but also some calculation.

That might seem to be a long word for a housemaid, but I had been educated to be a young lady.

Mr Grand was a man who thought ahead. He saw something in me that interested him. It wouldn’t do for now, for though sixteen, I had much filling out to do. He was ready to wait, just as he was prepared to wait for the right chance to further his career. He was a man who saw potentials closed to those with a less penetrating gaze. In pursuing his goals, he was patient.

“She will do very well, Mrs Carr,” he gave that cold smile he sometimes used. “That solves your little problem. Now, as to mine –”

The housekeeper was indignant enough to do what servants, even the higher ones, should never do. She cut him off, which was bad enough, and then she contradicted him. “Hardly, Sir. I have no time to train her, and -”

He drew back. She could not have done more to ensure I got the post. He looked down his well shaped nose at her and cut her off in turn. “I just hired the girl, Mrs. Carr. That makes an end to the matter. See about her box and the rest.”

Later on, I was willing to bet, he would see about my box himself.

Book Review: Finding Lord Farlisle by Cassandra Dean

Finding Lord Farlisle by Cassandra Dean is a passionate and touching story of past friends reuniting after years apart.

Lord Maxim Farlisle was shipwrecked and presumed dead more than a decade ago. Many of his memories lost, he always recalled a girl with golden hair. As his memories returned, he made his way back to his childhood home to find Waithe Hall shut and deserted.

Lady Alexandra Torrence mourned the loss of her childhood friend Maxim, but her fascination with spirits leads her back to Waithe Hall to investigate mysterious activities seen by the villagers. Long since shuttered, she is surprised to discover a ghost of a different kind...Maxim in the flesh.

Both scared by their time apart, they begin to reconnect and fill in the years that they lost, realizing that all along, they have only wanted to be together.

What a fascinating novella. Dean writes an intriguing story of two people unexpectedly brought back together again. The characters are well-developed considering the short length, and you can't help but root for them to find a way of getting beyond those miserable years where Maxim was assumed dead; when he struggled with finding his way in a world where he didn't belong, with many of his memories gone.

Alexandra is likable from the start. You admire her spunk and her uniqueness. She brings out something in Maxim he thought lost. She makes him see his truth worth.

Absolutely love how the author worked Maxim's disability into the story line and kept it real.

I'm eager to see what the next book is all about.

EXCERPT

It was eleven years ago. The pain had faded, but had never truly left. Alexandra had thought
she’d learned to live with it. But now…now Maxim was here?

A thunderous scowl on his face, he made a noise of impatience. “I do not have the inclination for this, girl. Tell me why you have come.”

His voice crashed over her. That, too, had deepened with age, but it was him. It was him.

“It is you.” Joy filled her, so big it felt her skin couldn’t contain it. Throwing herself at him, she enveloped him in a hug.

He stiffened.

Embarrassment coursed through her. What was she thinking? Immediately, she untangled herself from him. “I beg your pardon,” she stammered. Always before they’d been exuberant in their affections. They’d always found ways to touch one another, even though that last summer, the one before he’d gone away, she’d begun to feel...more....

Clasping her hands before her, she brought herself to the present. Much had changed, now they were grown and he, apparently, had not died.

Maxim had not died.

A wave of emotion swept her, a mix of relief, joy, incredulity…. It buckled her knees and burned her eyes. He was alive. Maxim was alive.

Book Review: Appointment in Prague by Michael & Kathleen McMenamin

A thrilling historical novel with a non-nonsense heroine is what you'll find in Appointment in Prague by Michael & Kathleen McMenamin.

Mattie McGary has a grudge. Though she has promised her husband not to volunteer for any other dangerous assignments, she decides to assist in her godfather Winston Churchill's operation to execute SS General Reinhard Heydrich. Her godfather would never have approved of her involvement either. She now has six-year-old twins to consider. When the operation fails, Mattie conceives her own plan to kill Heydrich, putting herself in greater danger than even she realizes.

Wow! This is an action-packed, intense story that brings the reader right into the world of WWII espionage. Well-developed characters, a tough heroine, and great attention to historical detail fills these pages. The cliffhanger ending lets you know that Mattie's story is far from over and that new dangers lurk behind the corner.

My only gripe is the omniscient narrator telling me things that will happen in the future. It's a personal bias of mine, so I can't fault the authors. I just find it draws me out of the story and away from the present happenings.

That aside, this is a superb read and I would want to go back and check out previous Mattie adventures.
