Guest Blogger: Hope Waters, Author of Twelve Days

Zoey Blake is having a perfect holiday season. Finals are over and it's time to head home for Christmas, but when she wins the Hartbreakers True Love contest to join them on their tour, she has a chance to follow her favorite band for twelve days -- and twelve steamy nights.

Mackenzie has been a player since and joining Hartbreakers has only edged up his game, that is until he meets Zoey. She's turned his world upside down and only she can make it right. Now all he has to do is convince her to stay with him forever. For a guy like Mack, that shouldn't be too hard but it's gonna take all he has and twelve days to win her true love.

Character Interview – Mackenzie Hart

Hi! Today, in our virtual studio, we have the creator of the Hartbreakers vocal group, Mackenzie Hart. Let’s all give him a round of applause.

(claps from our virtual studio audience)

Mack: Thank you! I’m happy to stop by…your…virtual studio. Wait, how did I get here?

Me: That’s not important. Let’s get started with the interview. How did you get all the guys of Hartbreakers together?

Mack: Uh, well, I’ve been singing since I could speak and when my high school vocal group went our separate ways after we graduated, I decided to get another one going. I met Gabe at an audition and it just took off from there.

Me: That’s so cool. Oh my God, I love Gabe.

Mack: Yeah, all the girls like him. Hell, I like him too.

Me: (mouth drops open) you’re my hero.

Mack: Thanks, I think. Next question?

Me: Oh (shuffles note cards) how do you come up with your songs?

Mack: We have had the privilege of working with some of the best songwriters and producers in the business. We’ve had some great ideas that have been shaped and molded into the songs you hear on the album.

Me: Do you have any tidbits about new music from Hartbreakers?

Mack: Our next stop after the Twelve Days tour is a small break for the holidays — and this is the first year we’ll be home for Christmas — then we’re headed for Europe. After all that, we’re headed into the studio to record our next album.

Me: That’s so awesome. Change of direction. Favorite place you would like to take a date?

Mack: I’d love to take a girl out to dinner and then…I love walking on the beach so I’d take her there and hold her hand…

Me: (swoons) I’d love that.

Mack: (nods) did you have another question?

Me: Yes…um… (shuffles note cards again) do you get along with the other guys?

Mack: Oh yeah, we’re like brothers, or at least what I imagine having a brother is like because I’m an only child. We fight sometimes, which is understandable because we’re around each other practically 24/7, especially Brad and Gabe. Their fights can be legendary.

Me: Gotcha. Last, but definitely not the least, what do you think about the contest where a group of girls is going to come on tour with you for twelve days…and twelve nights and have the ultimate fan experience?

Mack: We’re pretty excited about it. The concerts are going to be amazing. We love our fans and are looking forward to giving the winners a great ride.

Me: (raises eyebrows) a great ride?

Mack: Uh… yeah, you know, like on the tour bus… like their tour bus. The winners get their own tour bus and we’ll be on our tour bus. (nods) yeah.

Me: (nods with wide eyes) yeah, that sounds really awesome.

Mack: so… are we good?

Me: Yes.

Mack: You’re not going to ask about whether I’m wearing boxers or briefs?

Me: why would I ask about that?

Mack: We always get that question. I don’t know. I don’t make the rules.

Me: No, I don’t want to know about your underwear.

Mack: Great. Now, how do I leave?

Me: We’re in a virtual realm. We can’t leave.

Mack: Oh. Well I guess we’re stuck here then.

Me: Yup. Good times.

Thanks to The Book Connection for asking Mack and I to stop by. Take care and be excellent to each other!

Book Spotlight and Giveaway: Flip the Beat by Roxanne D. Howard

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR

Molly Ivers thought she found Prince Charming, but without a devilishly sexy accent, and six months ago she gave into their undeniable attraction. But the swarm of ever-present groupies was so not part of the fairy tale. As much as it hurt her heart, she shut out rocker Evan Castle.

Now, on the verge of finishing her graduate degree and moving to Paris—she even hires a French life coach—Molly begins to realize Evan, who hasn't given up on her, might be the man of her dreams after all.

Excerpt

“So, you’re going through with it?”

“Going through with what?” They both looked into the living room, where a bemused Evan stood half-naked and barefoot in a pair of black pajama bottoms. Molly licked nectar off the peach on the end of her fork to save it from dropping to the floor. Evan’s jaw tightened, and his eyes gleamed as he zeroed in on her. He cleared his throat and lifted an empty half gallon of milk. “Sorry, you left the door cracked open. I came to borrow milk.”

“Jesus, Evan! Knock next time, or at least text. I’m in my panties!” Nell smacked him on the arm and tugged down her nightshirt as she ran past him into her bedroom.

“Sorry,” he said, but he seemed distracted as he strode toward Molly, eyes glued to her lips. She sucked the rest of her peach slice into her mouth and wiped at a little of the nectar at the corner of her lips. Her cheeks blazed at the hungry longing in his eyes. She turned away to open the fridge to get the milk. It wasn’t uncommon for them to borrow food from one another, and he always watched out for them. He had a comforting, protective nature she’d gotten used to.

She grew painfully aware of her night shorts, which had a tendency to ride up her butt and cut off at midthigh, and her thin white tank top. Could he see her nipples? And jeez, Louise, why did they have to harden every time he came near her?

She pushed hair out of her face and began to pour the milk into his empty half gallon. “Help yourself to the fruit in the bowl there. Nell had leftovers. How much milk do you want?”

“Enough for a bowl of cereal, please. I’ll get some at the store later.” She’d only heard his voice drop as low and husky during sex. She stopped after she poured enough milk, then gave him extra.

Evan reached over her to open a nearby drawer. He took out a fork. He inserted it into the flesh of a peach slice and brought it to his lips.

“Forbidden fruit, hmm?”

He teased the fruit around his lips with a wicked smirk. He winked at her and sank his teeth into half the peach as he watched her, licking it. Her mouth went dry. Oh, he knew what he was doing. He chewed, licked his bottom lip, and held out the fork.

“Want some?”

Before she could gain common sense and say no, she closed her eyes and parted her lips. He slid the remaining slice in. Molly closed her mouth around it. He withdrew the fork tines slowly from her closed lips, and his finger grazed her lower lip.

“You’ve got a bit on your…”

She opened her eyes and sharply inhaled. He’d moved closer, right there, and was about to kiss her. She turned away, burning.

Book Spotlight: The Rehabilitation of Master Dillon by P. Nelson

The Rehabilitation of Master Dillon is another prequel novella to my debut novel Take My Hand. It would probably be beneficial to read Take My Hand first, but honestly, I think you can enjoy it as a stand alone.

Master Dillon is the resident porn star of the cage and at one time was the most famous Dom in the industry. Unfortunately, accusations of abuse by his former full time submissive and fellow adult performer threaten to ruin his career. More than this, Dillon is deeply affected by the idea he might have been abusing his former sub during their Dom/sub relationship and goes through a crisis of conscious.

Luckily for Master Dillon, his friends at The Cage, the most exclusive BDSM club in Vancouver, are more than willing to get Dillon back into his leather pants and spanking subs asses. The newly hired shrink of The Cage, Calla Jones guides Master Dillon through the steps he needs to get his confidence as a dominant partner back.

He is well on his way to recovery when his former submissive and accuser comes back into his life and threatens to take everything from Dillon once and for all.

The Rehabilitation of Master Dillon is available at Amazon.

EXCERPT

“Donnie, what do you think would have happened if you’d made contact with an actual person?” Dillon stood staring at one of the men he was supposed to be training to use a three-foot whip.
“I don’t know,” Donnie said sheepishly as he looked between the mannequin he was practicing on and Dillon. Shaking his head and trying to gain control of his temper, Dillon stalked forward and put one arm around the shoulders of the training mannequin.
“Let me explain it to you because you obviously didn’t read the material I sent home with you last week.” Dillon’s throat was tight as he did his best not to yell at his student. “You would have fucking opened up her skin.” He enunciated each word for impact. Donnie flinched. “Your poor sub would have needed stitches to sew her flesh back together. Is that what you want to do to some poor sub who has placed her trust in you?”
“No, Master Dillon,” the other man replied immediately. He appeared to be remorseful, but Dillon was not in the mood to ease the other man’s fears.
“Are you sure? Because we’ve been meeting for the past four weeks, and every time it comes to a demonstration, you’re sloppy and ill-prepared.” Dillon stepped away from the mannequin and pointed a finger at Donnie. “I wouldn’t let you near my worst enemy’s sister. As it is, I think the mannequin has taken enough of your abuse. If you don’t start taking this seriously, don’t bother coming back next week.”
“You’re going to kick me out of the class?” Donnie looked shocked. “Come on, Master Dillon, you can’t kick me out. My girlfriend really wants this.”
Dillon’s jaw clenched tight for a second before he barked out, “What did we discuss here on the first day, Paul?”
“We had to discuss the reasons why we were here and whether or not they were the right reasons,” Paul, one of Dillon’s best students automatically replied. Donnie’s shoulders slumped, and Dillon sighed. It wasn’t this guy’s fault. The recent popularity of alternative lifestyles, not to mention a hugely successful book series, had made kink cool. Unfortunately, not everyone who wanted to be a Dom could actually get there. The door to the room where he was holding his evening BDSM training class opened, and a familiar woman stepped inside. He ignored the newcomer and focused on Donnie.
“Donnie, everyone has been where you are right now.” He tried to make his voice seem sympathetic and soothing. “But the fact of the matter is that if you don’t take this training seriously, there’s no way in hell I’m going to sign you off to play with a real, living, breathing person. You’re going to have to make a decision as to whether BDSM is for you regardless of your girlfriend’s feelings.”
“But she’ll dump me if you kick me out of this class.” Donnie’s shoulders slumped, and Dillon’s empathy button clicked on. “Listen, man, she has to understand that maybe being a Dom isn’t for you. Why don’t you talk to Miss Jones about other options in the BDSM world.” Dillon was not about to outright suggest that Donnie was a sub and should let his girlfriend tie him up and beat his ass. After all, they were in the middle of a group of dudes, and that was Calla’s job.
“We can discuss this with your girlfriend at the next couples meeting, Donnie,” Calla Jones spoke from where she stood by the door. Dillon glanced in her direction with a look of relief. The psychologist for The Cage, the most exclusive BDSM club in Vancouver merely nodded in return.
“All right, gentlemen.” Dillon focused on everyone else in the class. “We’re done for the evening. Keep practicing with your single tails. I want to see some marked improvement and read the chapters on flogging and blood circulation for next week. See you then.” Dillon spoke to a couple of men with questions as he packed up his black kit bag.
“It looked like you were having fun.” Calla approached once all the men left the room.
“You have to do something about Donnie. He’s not a Dom,” Dillon said to Calla. “Why in hell did you let him into this class?”
“He wanted to try.” Calla shrugged a shoulder. “I told him he was more on the submissive side, but he really wanted to give the whole Dom experience thing a go. As I said in the beginning, I will bow to your experience on the matter. If you say Donnie is out, I will talk to him about joining the male submissive class.”
“Fine. I don’t want him here. He doesn’t do the work, and he could really hurt someone,” Dillon said before bending down to start taking apart the stand for the mannequin. “For that matter, I don’t think training junior Doms is really my thing.”
“Really? From where I was standing I thought you were doing a great job,” Calla voice sounded as if she were smiling.
“What’s the point anyway, none of these guys will be playing at The Cage,” Dillon grumbled.
“We’re doing community outreach, remember. Teaching responsible and safe practices in the BDSM community so people don’t get hurt. Just think of all the subs’ asses you saved tonight.” Calla beamed down at Dillon as he looked up.
“That’s ten swats for swearing, sub,” he growled at her.
“I’m not your training sub anymore,” Calla pointed out.
“Nope, but I’m still going to spank your ass if you get lippy,” Dillon’s smile was genuine as he took in the look of horror on Calla’s face when she realised he was serious. “Besides, are you going to play with any of the big bad Doms who are slobbering to get their hands on that backside of yours?” he asked even though he knew the answer.
“I’m not ready.” Calla’s voice had grown tight, and Dillon turned his attention back to dismantling the stand. “Besides, I’m here to talk with you.”
“Our session isn’t until Thursday,” Dillon replied absently. He had been seeing Calla as a shrink for a month or so now. She was helping him get past his issues with an ex-sub who accused him of abuse in the Dom/sub relationship.
“I realise that,” Calla responded and moved out of the way as Dillon stood up and held the mannequin under one arm and the stand in the other hand. “But you’ve made such good progress over the last few weeks, I think it’s time you took your first steps towards being an actual Dom again.”
“Like having sex?” Dillon said with a hopeful voice. “When I agreed to not to have sex until you thought I was ready, I had no idea it would take so long to be ready. I mean, I haven’t had such a long dry spell since I was….” He thought about it for a minute. “Well, never actually. I’m a porn star, and before I was a porn star, I liked to have lots of sex.”
Calla smiled broadly at him, and her response made Dillon feel good. He was slowly learning to joke around again. “Yes, I think you’re ready to get back out there and have sex.”
A mixture of trepidation and excitement went through Dillon at the prospect of having a submissive under his care. Working her body for his pleasure and hers. He placed a false smile on his face. “Great, I can’t wait to tie up some poor sub and spank her ass.”
“That’s going to have to wait.” Calla’s expression grew serious.
“What do you mean? You said I could get back into the saddle again?” Dillon’s eyes narrowed on her face. “Don’t tease me, woman.”
“Yeah, I said you could have sex again, Dillon. Vanilla sex.” Calla went over to where he had left his kit bag and winter jacket and picked them up. “I’ll help you to your car.” She walked to the door. Dillon was still dumbstruck as he followed her movements, his mind spinning over all the possibilities of this calamity. Calla opened the door and held it.
“I can’t.” Dillon finally said before shaking himself out of his stupor.
“You were rather excited by the prospect a moment ago,” Calla pointed out.
Dillon readjusted the mannequin under his arm and walked towards the door. “I was excited about the prospect of having normal sex with a woman or two. Not to, you know, go missionary on some chick.” He stepped into the corridor of the community centre, and he watched as Calla flicked the lights off. She turned and handed him his jacket. He carefully balanced the mannequin against the wall and laid the stand on the ground before he shrugged into the warm garment quickly before picking up the mannequin and stand again.
“No bondage, no spankings.” Calla let the door fall shut behind her. “Anything else is up for negotiation with whoever takes your fancy. There’s more to vanilla than just the missionary position.”
“But that’s the point.” Dillon felt his panic rising at the thought of just having sex with some woman. “There’s no contract, there’s no negotiation. How the hell am I supposed to know what she likes and doesn’t like?”
Calla laughed as they walked past the reception desk of the community centre and a woman waved them off. “You’re going to have to do what all the rest of the men in the world do.”
“But they’re idiots,” Dillon announced as the fresh night air hit him. It was full winter in Vancouver, and he could see frost already blanketed the ground. He stopped at the trunk of his Benz and fumbled around in the pocket of his jeans for his key fob. “Where the hell am I going to find someone to have vanilla sex with me? I haven’t even had vanilla sex since way before I started doing scenes on film.”
“I’m sure there are innumerable women who would be willing to have vanilla sex with you, Dillon.” Calla’s tone was less reassuring and more exasperated. “Just use that famous charm on some poor girl, and I’m sure you’ll be into her pants in no time.”
Dillon finally pulled the fob out and pressed the button for the trunk to open. “Women have certain expectations when they fuck me, Calla.” Dillon wrestled the mannequin into the trunk of his car and was thankful it was only a torso. “They want the whole Master Dillon experience, not some vanilla rip-off.” He reached over and plucked his kit bag out of Calla’s hands and set it in the trunk before shutting it.
“That’s exactly why you need to have some vanilla sex. Just once. You need to go back to the beginning and remember what you loved about fucking in the first place.” Calla stood with her shoulders up around her ears to keep warm, and puffs of white cloud came out of her mouth as she spoke.
“Twenty smacks,” Dillon said automatically. He thought over everything she said. Maybe she had a point. Besides, the thought of doing a scene at the moment still gave him cold sweats. “I’ll walk you to your car.” They were silent as they crossed the parking lot, and Calla unlocked the door to her car.
Dillon wanted to tell her she was crazy, and he still had loads of misgivings about trying to find a girl who would have vanilla sex with him, but Calla had really helped him during the past few weeks. She helped him even though he knew she was still hurting over his friend’s rejection of her submission. She was a great lady, and he owed it to her to see her therapy through.
“Yeah, ok, I’ll do it vanilla.” Dillon said as he heard her door lock disengage, and he opened her car door for her. “Assuming I can find someone to go missionary with me.”
Calla smiled and hugged him tightly. “You don’t have to go into details. I just want to know you did it.” She got into her seat. “I’ll see you at the club tomorrow night?”
“Yeah, I’ll be there with my vanilla on.” Dillon joked before shutting the door. He waited until Calla had started her car and driven out of the lot before he went over to his own vehicle. He got behind the wheel, locked the doors, and took his phone out of his jacket pocket. He held his breath as he looked at the screen. Eight text messages, one from his agent who was beyond eager to have him back working again and seven from Tiffany Moretz, aka. Holly Go Lightly, the architect of his current nightmare. Dillon threw the phone onto the passenger seat and started the car’s engine. He needed to get back to his loft in Yaletown, have a drink, and think about who the hell he was going to have some vanilla sex with.

Book Review & Giveaway: Love on the Menu by Ellen March

Funny and sexy, Love on the Menu by Ellen March is one wild ride.

When loner Jago Tanner requests the agency find him an assistant, he has no idea what he's getting into. Not only was he expecting a man, Riley--a woman--dresses like a trollop and curses like a sailor. She's the sexiest woman he has ever seen. She's also the most frustrating woman he's ever known.

Jago has trouble trusting his feelings for Riley. He's also not sure anyone who dresses and talks that way could still be so naive. When her brother's shady friends come to harass her, Jago is not sure what to believe. Are they really meant to be together?

What a great book! I couldn't put it down. Riley and Jago are such opposites: he's introverted and gruff  while she's outspoken and bubbly. Riley is almost comical in her behavior. Her strong sense of right and wrong, however, give her a more serious side. Jago was tough to like, but I found myself rooting for him to win Riley's heart in the end. The author also created a group of secondary characters I loved--even Riley's mixed up brother, Rob.

Love on the Menu has its share of steamy love scenes, but it's really the characters and the fabulous plot that make this book an enjoyable read. I would like to meet these characters again one day. That this happens to be a cowboy romance means I was already partial to it; but it is the great characters that made it impossible for me to walk away until I turned the last page.

Interview with Gianna Day, Author of Sylvie and the Spark

Gianna Day writes erotica and erotic comedies. She lives in the pacific northwest where she enjoys running, flying kites, exploring museums, and eating late-night desserts in all-night diners. She believes that with a healthy sense of humor, everything will be just fine. She's the author of the Hot Secrets Collection, which includes five erotic, lesbian short stories, and The Sylvie Series, a collection of hetero-novellas full of both comedy and naughty bits (sometimes at the same time). Sylvie & the Spark and Sylvie Says Yes are available now on Amazon. Sylvie on Strike is soon to follow. Visit her at www.GiannaDay.blogspot.com.

Connect & Socialize with Gianna!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a bit of a health nut, generally happy, and for most the part, drama free. I think life is too short to waste on all that’s negative in this world, unless you are actively and earnestly trying to change it. Happiness begets happiness.

I count any day when I can read, write, and move as a good day. I have a pretty eclectic reading list. In addition to humor and erotica, I’ve been known to write some really abominable poetry. As far as movement, I love running and yoga.

When did you begin writing?

When I was very young. I wish I had dated some of my early stories, so I knew for sure. By the handwriting, I guess I was about 8 or 9, but I still have them and keep them in a binder. They are short stories that show a bit of an obsession with the macabre, which I must have eventually grown out of because there’s nothing dark about the adult me or my writing.

I continued writing through adolescence and into adulthood. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was really trying out different genres and styles to find where I fit. That’s a question many young writers face and I think trial-and-error is the best way to go about finding the answer. When you experiment with different content and form, eventually you find your place.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I used to try to train myself to be able to write anywhere at any time. Waiting rooms, parking lots, and other places where you sometimes find yourself stuck with a few minutes to spare. Eventually I surrendered to the fact that without a chunk of time, I’m pretty much useless. Two to four hours is ideal. I find that getting up early in the morning (earlier than my body wants to) works well for this.

What is this book about?

Sylvie realizes that while her relationship with her boyfriend might be momentarily satisfying in the bedroom, she is neither excited about it nor in love with him outside of the bedroom. What follows are a series of relationship misfires in the quest for Mister Right. The novella is equal parts erotica and comedy; chapter one combines both of those elements and readers usually know right away if the book is for them. Much of the comedy comes from the characters in Sylvie’s life, her quirky mother, humping dog, and the grossly inappropriate but entertaining and gorgeous twins with whom she works at a diner.

What inspired you to write it?

I self-published a collection of erotic short stories. A publisher read them and approached me about doing a series that incorporated comedy. I’d written humor before, but never put the two together. As soon as he presented me with the idea, I knew that I could pull it off and that it would be a lot of fun.

Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

I don’t have an agent, but I’m fairly content at the moment without one. I know how to produce work on my own and I’m also happy with the arrangement I have with my publisher. If my work gains a much greater following, I may give more thought to looking for an agent, but I’m not quite there yet.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

Because of the publishing industry today, I think the road to publication is extremely smooth, but that doesn’t guarantee success. In the case of Sylvie and the Spark, a publisher read some of my self-published work and approached me about writing this series. I hadn’t worked with a publisher before but I’m game for just about anything. So far, so good.

If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

No, which doesn’t mean I’ve done everything right, but I’m constantly looking forward and moving forward. Every time you put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, or engage in an aspect related to writing, you learn more about the process. Writing is constant improvement. Publishing and marketing involve continual education. I wouldn’t change a thing about the past and I think it helps improve the future.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

The series is currently available only on Amazon. Sylvie and the Spark and Sylvie Says Yes are up now. The third novella, Sylvie on Strike has been written for some time and the publisher assures me it will be up soon.

What is the best investment you have made in promoting your book?

Hiring someone to help put together a blog tour. I used Pump Up Your Book and definitely will again. Depending on how technically savvy you are, you may or may not need to hire someone to help you set up your presence online. Beyond that, one investment many writers are surprised about is how much time they will need to devote to getting the word out.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

You can talk about writing, you can buy books on writing, and you can fret about writing. Or you can sit down and write.

What is up next for you?

I’m not sure. Like I said, I’m game for just about anything. The twins in the Sylvie books were such a blast to write, I’ve considered a series focused on them. Outlining a book can be so much fun but also very revealing. Sometimes you think you have the general flow of a book in your head, but when you start to put it in print, it takes an entirely different direction.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a stay at home author with years of experience in marketing and public relations under my belt. I also wore many hats ranging from fashion model, interior designer and office manager to art gallery owner, which has given me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and all walks of life.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Torrance, California, moved with my family to Seattle, Washington at the age of twelve, met my husband in college and moved to Beaverton, Oregon before eventually settling in Troutdale. Torrance and Seattle were both great places go grow up. In California, I was a sun-kissed baby and spent every weekend camping and waterskiing with my family and about six other families who would travel with us. There were always about a dozen kids to play and grow up with. Seattle was more about living and getting around in the city – riding the ferries, picking strawberries on Vashon Island, hanging out in Pike’s Place market and walking dogs on Alki Beach.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

I have lots of great memories but my favorite is my dad standing on the tarmac at LAX with me sitting on his shoulders watching planes take off. He was a mechanic and plant maintenance supervisor and began working at United Airlines when they still had prop engine planes and Chiclets gum.

When did you begin writing?

I’ve always loved to write stories and started showing a real interest in 6th grade. My teacher at the time realized I had a real active imagination and encouraged me to keep journals and write on a regular basis. As a result, Miss Tuttle will always be my hero.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I’m a chronic writer – typing away every opportunity I get. But mostly I follow a schedule writing from 12pm – 4pm unless I’m on roll and then it can be until 2 in the morning.

What is this book about?

Buried Threads picks up where Severed Threads left off but this book also stands alone. Rachel Lyons and Chase Cohen have joined forces in a treasure hunting company and have been recruited to recover a priceless emerald from a ship in the Sea of Japan. However, unbeknownst to them, they have signed on for an Indiana Jones-style adventure taking them through shark-invested waters and a death-defying cave and ancient hidden tomb, while contending with Yakuza and school girl gang members, in order to recover three cursed samurai swords and save Japan from a monk’s frightening prediction.

What inspired you to write it?

Buried Threads is the second book in my Threads series and is one I always wanted to write since I’ve had the opportunity to meet and interact with numerous geishas and maikos in Japan. My husband’s uncle was a member of the yakuza (Japanese mafia), which fascinated me, and a good friend is a Buddhist monk with a gift of prophecy who has a large international following. They make up the heart of this story and made telling it so much more fun.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My husband will always be my greatest supporter but my children are my greatest fans.

Are you a member of a critique group? If no, who provides feedback on your work?

Yes – I’m in a group with five authors who exchange ideas and share their manuscripts for feedback.

Who is your favorite author?

I have many but find myself reading a lot of Jodi Picoult, Gillian Flynn and Lisa Gardner books.

Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

I don’t have an agent at this time and am not actively seeking one.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

At the beginning, my journey was extremely rough since I was completely focused on getting an agent and went through 20 rejections before being picked up by a firm in New York. My agent absolutely loved my first book but when it came to marketing it, my incorporation of mixed genres made it a difficult sell and she wanted me to totally rewrite it, eliminating the main character and plot line. I wasn’t willing to do so and we parted ways. This book was eventually picked up by a small publisher and did extremely well. I have since elected to self publish all my books and like the idea of being in charge of my own destiny.

If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

I guess mixing genres isn’t a wise move, but Flaherty’s Crossing came from my heart and I wasn’t willing to compromise my story or beliefs to fit a mold or find a place on the shelf. So I guess I would honestly have to say no.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Powell’s Book Store, Creative Edge Publishing LLC, independent book stores and distributors, and my website.

Do you have a website and/or blog where readers can find out more?

Information and details about my books can be found at: www.kaylinmcfarren.com; suggestions on how to publish and market your books are available on my publishing site: www.creativeedgepublishing.com.

Do you have a video trailer to promote your book? If yes, where can readers find it?

Currently in the works with Pump Up Your Book Promotion. (The link might be finished before this interview goes to print.)

What is the best investment you have made in promoting your book?

Definitely Pump Up Your Book virtual book tours. Dorothy’s a real gem and she definitely gets the word out on new book releases. Hiring a great promoter is by far the best dollars spent.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

You know your story better than anyone. Don’t compromise, learn how to market yourself and above all…stay true to their beliefs.

What is up next for you?

The last book in the Threads series – Banished Threads, which will take my treasure hunting crew to England and drop them into a twisted web of art thieves, broken promises and an ancient secret society.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Never stop reading or writing. Imagination sets the mind free!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m from Pennsylvania, but I love Las Vegas, and you’ll definitely see that reflected in my work.

When did you begin writing?

After I saw the movie "Reservoir Dogs" Quentin Tarantino was just such a huge inspiration. I know he’s a screenwriter and not technically an author, but in his work and his writing, it was so obvious that he was going full guns for what HE loved onscreen, and he was doing his own twists on it and making it fresh and seemingly original. That sort of passion and talent and disregard for what the mainstream would purchase was entirely energizing and inspiring. I figured if he could write with that one thing in mind, so could I, and then hope my tastes matched up with a set of readers. But even if the audience didn’t come, at least I’d be writing what I loved.

What is this book about?

It’s a very sexy romantic comedy set primarily in Las Vegas. Here’s the pitch:

Meet Izzy Santillo. She's a charming-but-lonely thirty-four year old woman who loves poker and harbors a secret crush on the reigning king of Hold 'em. Meet Nick Nolan, the reigning king of Hold 'em. On the tables, he's fast and loose and almost always wins. But when it comes to women, playboy Nick holds his cards too close and always loses. When Izzy and Nick meet in embarrassing fashion at a Las Vegas poker tournament, Izzy's secret dreams turn into a public nightmare. But despite her humiliation, she may have finally sparked Nick's interest in something other than cards. Before long, Nick takes a gamble on Izzy and raises the stakes when he offers to help her sharpen her game. But Izzy's convinced that Nick is bluffing and will fold his hand after he's had her on the flop. But a string of outrageous proposition bets and steamy trips on the poker tour, from Los Angeles to Miami, make these two fierce competitors realize that it may be time to put all their chips on the table. Will Izzy and Nick pair up? Or will they lose it all if they go all-in for each other? Sit down, ante up, and hang on, as Nick and Izzy get ready to Shuffle Up and Deal.

What inspired you to write it?

Paul Newman. Both "The Hustler" and "The Color of Money" specifically. They got me thinking about mentoring someone with talent and the whole idea of teaching someone tricks of trades. With him, it was pool, but poker has exploded on the scene and it carries a lot of the same dynamics – even more so – when it comes to learning about playing people. And I thought it could be really fun to explore that dynamic between two people who are obviously attracted to each other, but are going to have basic trust issues because their profession is to literally lie, bluff and beat the other one.

Are you a member of a critique group? If no, who provides feedback on your work?

I have some wonderful writer friends who read and help tremendously. Mostly, Don Capone. He’s very talented and busy, but his input in invaluable.

Who is your favorite author?

I do not have just one. I love Anthony Bourdain, Chuck Palahniuk, Jackie Collins. In fact, I wanted to be Jackie Collins. Tom Robbins, Chris Moore, Elmore Leonard, Charles Bukowski. And, as you can tell, I love movies, so there are a lot of screenwriters I really admire. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore will forever have me jealous of what they wrote together. I know, you may not know their names, but I bet you’ve seen, and loved the movie they wrote.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Just sit down and start typing. Thinking about it won’t make it happen. Ass in seat gets it done.

What is up next for you?

After Shuffle Up, I have one more book in my Vegas series titled Lady Luck. Though these books are all technically a series, readers can pick up any one and read them individually and not be lost. Lady Luck is one I’m also proud of, because it’s a comic version of Hamlet that centers around a Vegas showgirl who gets conked on the head and believes she’s the human incarnation of luck. Much like Shuffle Up was my take on “The Color of Money,” I would say Lady Luck is a love letter to both Shakespeare and Tom Robbins, another writer I adore. I wanted to try something fantastical.

Thank you so much for having me!

Book Spotlight: Shelton's Homecoming by Dianne Hartsock

Shelton’s coming home, but after seven months of living apart, can he and Nevil pick up from where they’d left off?

Shelton’s grown tired of living a life separate from Nevil. So when Nevil is hurt in an accident at work, Shelton comes home for good. Feeling closer than ever to his lover, Shelton’s ready to make a lasting commitment to their relationship. But is that what Nevil wants? Nevil is less than enthusiastic when an old flame marries, leaving Shelton wondering if he’ll have to keep his dreams on hold indefinitely.

Arthur Bedwyr's review

4.5 stars

Shelton and Nevile is one of my favorite couples. After Shelton's Choice, I was a bit hesitant to read this book out of concern that the chaos in the third book was repeated here. Fortunately, it didn't happen.

This book starts with Nevile was hospitalized after an accident in his working site. Shelton, who still lived in CO, came home fast and was struck seeing his boyfriend laying on hospital bed. That made him realized how bad his decision in last book was. The next day, when Shelton came to bring Nevile home, he was surprised to see Nevile's ex was there. But, Percy actually came to visit and brought a news: He was getting married in New York. He asked Nevile to be his best man and invited everyone to be in his wedding, this weekend. The trip to New York brought joy and sadness. Joy for Percy (and his fiance Brandon). Sadness for Shelton as he longed to have what the other couple had. But he knew Nevile had never been one to bother to say, "I do..."

I really enjoyed reading this book. It returns to the style and feeling of the first two books: romantic, fun, and sexy. The writing is clear, the plots fit the length of the book. The issue is also interesting, not self-fabricated like in the previous one. With more and more states recognize gay marriage, the issue whether the boyfriends (or girlfriends) want to get married or not become a serious question for some couples. The only reason it lost half star is that the book could use less sex scenes. Still, it really didn't take much from my enjoyment (and relief) of this fourth installment of Shelton and Nevile's story.

Looking forward to the fifth book.

Mandy's review

I love Nevill and Shelton, and this was a really sweet continuation of their story!
Can't wait to see what the next one brings, although with how this one ended, I know what I'd like to see! :)

My only niggle was this one was maybe a bit heavy on the sex for such a short, but I managed somehow! LOL

Sadonna's review

I liked this follow-up story for Shelton and Nevil. It's contemporary and really reflects the kinds of decisions all couples have to make regarding life choice that will affect their relationships.

There were a few too many filler sex scenes in this one for my taste, but I really like this couple and I look forward to the next episode in their story.

Dianne grew up in a large, boisterous and loving family in California, spent ten years in the rocky mountains of Colorado, and now lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon.
She says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to do her writing. There’s something about being cooped up in the house while it pours rain outside and a fire crackles on the hearth inside that kindles her imagination.

Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which she says is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

Author Spotlight: The Cowboy and the Hellcat by Sherry James

Gun toting Ellie Merrick prefers buckskin and boots to satin and lace. Adam Ford doesn't want to take a bride, especially one who knows nothing about being a proper wife. But when Adam learns he must marry Ellie or lose his share of the 4 Aces Ranch, he also discovers the Hellcat has captured his heart.

The Cowboy And The Hellcat is Book #1 of The Cowboys of the Four Aces series by Sherry James.

Read an excerpt!

Nebraska, November 1876

Adam Ford’s father was dead.

Shot in the back by a thief for a measly fifty dollars and a Colt 45, Jack Ford’s body had been left to rot in the buffalo grass like some mangy, worthless coyote. And now he was buried deep in an unforgiving hole, the ancient prairie sod on top disturbed and left in clumps thickening into mud from the autumn rain pounding mercilessly from gray skies.

It was all such a mockery—the senseless killing, the abandonment, the abrupt decline of the weather—to the strong, proud man his father had once been. At least justice for Jack Ford had been swift. The sheriff had told Adam just hours before his father’s funeral, thanks to vigilantes; the thief had faced his punishment for the crime at the end of a rope that very morning at dawn. The residents of the county taking the law into their own hands probably wasn’t the right way to handle the situation, but Adam felt a sense of relief anyway. Frontier justice had offered a quick remedy, putting an end to the weeks of waiting for the circuit judge and a trial.

Feeling more exhausted after the long day of the funeral proceedings then he did after a day spent on the range rounding up strays, Adam stripped off his black suit coat and tossed it over the back of a chair. He yanked on the end of his tie and opened the stiff collar of his best Sunday shirt, ready to shut out the events of the last few days.

Filling a glass with a tall draw of whiskey, he took the bottle and slumped into the hard cushions of one of his mother’s matching chairs flanking the fireplace. He stretched his legs toward the flames in another useless attempt to banish the chill encompassing his body, but the stiffness of the chair only accentuated the cold and intensified the ache in his muscles.

After sitting quietly for a few moments, the plink, plink, plink of rain hitting against the windows registered in the back of his brain, rivaling the tick of the mantel clock and the snap of the flames in the grate for the most annoying sound in the room.

His fingers tightened around the glass as he brought the crystal to his lips again. Downing a long draw he swallowed slow, letting the liquid burn his throat, hoping the fire of the whiskey would mask the pain squeezing his chest.

It didn’t work.

Solemnly, he watched as the fire’s flames leaped along the logs, casting long shadows on the study walls. He dropped his gaze to the amber liquid left in the glass and realized neither the fire nor the whiskey would take away this chill. This emptiness.

Time would warm his soul again. Or so his mother had proclaimed in her strong, compassionate way. But Adam wasn’t convinced.

And time sure as hell couldn’t take away the injustice of his father’s murder.

A knock sounded on the door behind him. Adam cursed, in no mood to accept any more condolences today. The knock came again, this time louder, more insistent.

“Come in,” he growled, not bothering to get up from his seat. Instead he grabbed the bottle off the side table and refilled his glass. He heard the door open and shut with a soft click. Heavy, shuffling footsteps followed, telling him his visitor was a man. The steps stopped short. Not a word was spoken. Knowing he couldn’t avoid his guest forever, Adam rose and turned toward the source of the intrusion.
