Getting Ready: My Vacation Books

We are heading to the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Saturday. So thrilled to be finalizing all the work details, making packing lists, and figuring out what books to bring. Well, that last part was easy.

Here is what will be coming with me either on my Kindle or as a softcover.

Looks like a whole lot of mystery with a tiny bit of fantasy. What do you think of my beach reads? What do you enjoy reading while you are on vacation?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Mailbox Monday - May 24

Welcome to It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Mailbox Monday.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's a great post to organize yourself. It's an opportunity to visit and comment, and er... add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

Welcome back to Monday. The month of May is flying by. My professional world is so busy right now. I missed posting last week because I had too much going on. I hope you read a lot of great books.

As you can imagine, I haven't been reading as much as I would like.

My review of this one appeared on Wednesday.

I am almost done with this one.

I am in the middle of these three as well.

After this, I'm not sure. I want to give some thought to this year's vacation reads. Our annual visit to North Carolina can't come soon enough.

Nothing in my mailbox this week, but I still have plenty to read. Hope you have a great week.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Mailbox Monday - Mar 15

Monday is almost over while I am typing this. I spent last night putting together written testimony in the hopes of gaining support for a bill that would allow for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to apply for a federal grant to build a new Soldiers' Home in Holyoke.

As we come up on the one-year anniversary of the pandemic that left 77 veterans--including my father-in-law--dead at the Home, I pray the bill is approved and that this outdated facility is finally replaced so that veterans can be safe.

In my reading world, I have been trudging along with the little time I have.

I reviewed this book at my children's book blog today.

My review of this historical novel appeared here last week.

Look for my review of this thriller on March 19.

I am currently reading these two.

My hope is to have the review of this next book done by March 31 at The Children's and Teens' Book Connection.

Then I need to read this one.

Nothing new in my mailbox this week, which is fine since I am falling behind.

That's it from my neck of the woods. Hope you have a great week.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Mailbox Monday - March 8

Welcome to It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Mailbox Monday.

Welcome back to Monday! I hope you had a great weekend. I worked most of the weekend, but I will have some neat new listings coming up. Temperatures this week will be in the 50's, and one day we might hit 60. I am sure it won't last, but I will take it as long as it does.

Other than working a lot, I've edited a couple of manuscripts and read when I had a few moments. We are also looking into colleges for the Lil' Princess. I am excited about it, but it also make me sad since this is the last time we will go through the process. All my babies have grown up.

In my reading world, I reviewed this book at my children's book blog.

My review of this novel is due on March 10. I love historical fiction.

I am also reading this one. The review will appear on March 29.

My hope is to have the review of this next book done by March 31 at The Children's and Teens' Book Connection.

Then I need to read these two.

I decided to change out my winter mailbox. Maybe that will keep us from getting any more snow. I am truly ready for spring.

My physical mailbox held one new treat. I received a copy of a true crime story that I am eager to review. I've read some of the author's other books.

Bestselling author Caitlin Rother explores the mysterious death of 32-year-old Rebecca Zahau, who was found hanging from a second-story balcony of her multimillionaire boyfriend's San Diego mansion in 2011. She was naked and gagged, with her ankles tied and hands bound behind her. On the door to her bedroom investigators found a hand-written message: "SHE SAVED HIM, CAN YOU SAVE HER." The death was deemed a suicide, but Rother reveals there's more to the story...

"I got a girl, hung herself in the guest house."

The call came on the morning of July 13, 2011, from the historic Spreckels Mansion, a lavish beachfront property in Coronado, California, owned by pharmaceutical tycoon and multimillionaire Jonah Shacknai. When authorities arrived, they found the naked body of Jonah's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, gagged, her ankles tied and her wrists bound behind her. Jonah's brother, Adam, claimed to have found Rebecca hanging by a rope from the second-floor balcony. On a bedroom door in black paint were the cryptic words: SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER.

Was this scrawled message a suicide note or a killer's taunt? Rebecca's death came two days after Jonah's six-year-old son, Max, took a devastating fall while in Rebecca's care. Authorities deemed Rebecca's death a suicide resulting from her guilt. But who would stage either a suicide or a murder in such a bizarre, elaborate way?

Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother weaves stunning new details into a personal yet objective examination of the sensational case. She explores its many layers-including the civil suit in which a jury found Adam Shacknai responsible for Rebecca's death, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department bombshell decision to reconfirm its original findings. As compelling as it is troubling, this controversial real-life mystery is a classic American tragedy that evokes the same haunting fascination as the JonBenet Ramsey and O.J. Simpson cases.

Have you heard of this story? I don't remember it, but I am interested in reading about it. I've always enjoyed true crime. How about you?
