It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Mailbox Monday

Welcome to It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Mailbox Monday.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's a great post to organize yourself. It's an opportunity to visit and comment, and er... add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

Welcome back to Monday. I hope you had a nice week. As expected, mine was busy, but I crossed one major task off my list, so I feel rather productive. In addition to real estate, I am working on two editing projects and making my way through three seasons of Anne with an E. I am on the fence about this show, but I want to make it to the end of the three seasons before providing more thoughts about it.

Other than reading editing projects, I started this one.

These are next on the list.

Mailbox Monday is a meme started by Marcia of To Be Continued. Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. It now has a permanent home at the Mailbox Monday blog.

As a belated birthday gift, the family got me this book off my Amazon wish list. I enjoy reading non-fiction from time to time, though I don't do it as often as I used to.

Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results

No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving--every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results.

If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights.

Clear is known for his ability to distill complex topics into simple behaviors that can be easily applied to daily life and work. Here, he draws on the most proven ideas from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to create an easy-to-understand guide for making good habits inevitable and bad habits impossible. Along the way, readers will be inspired and entertained with true stories from Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians who have used the science of small habits to master their craft and vault to the top of their field.

Learn how to:
- make time for new habits (even when life gets crazy);
- overcome a lack of motivation and willpower;
- design your environment to make success easier;
- get back on track when you fall off course;
...and much more.

Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success, and give you the tools and strategies you need to transform your habits--whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or achieve any other goal.

That's it for me this week. Hope you share some of your reading world in the comments.

Book Review: Make Freelancing REALLY Pay by Daisy McCarty

Considering a freelancing career? Looking to take your freelancing career to the next level? Make Freelancing REALLY Pay by Daisy McCarty can help.

A practical guide to helping you "find the best clients, communicate with them effectively, negotiate a profitable price for their services, and build a robust referral network" is what Make Freelancing REALLY Pay is all about. In this no-nonsense book, you'll learn about: the different types of clients and who you should be going after, how to set a respectable minimum rate, why you shouldn't work for free, how to increase the perceived value of your services, how to improve your communication skills, and more.

Because this book isn't niche-specific, any freelancer can apply the guidelines and advice McCarty provides to her career. This quick and easy read with its conversational tone will inspire you to reconsider the value of your work and get the wheels turning in your mind for where you want your career to go next. Make Freelancing REALLY Pay also gets into some of the nitty-gritty of freelancing work like hourly rates, payment terms, and what is considered a rewrite.

Where I feel this book will definitely be helpful is in getting freelancers to stop discounting their work or working for free just to be published. Make Freelancing REALLY Pay shows all freelancers how to value the experience they bring to the table and price their work accordingly.

Book Spotlight: This Is How You Get Your Next Job by Andrea Kay

Even in a bad economy, companies have job openings they can't fill. Considering the millions of people who are out of work or unhappily employed, how can that be? What are job seekers doing to turn off employers? And what is it that employers want but aren't finding? Leading career expert and syndicated columnist Andrea Kay asked employers one simple question: Why didn't you hire the last ten people you interviewed? What it came down to, every time, wasn't a matter of skills or experience, but how applicants seemed based on what they said or did. From lack of preparation, to pushiness, to a subtly defensive attitude, it's the simple behaviors prospective employees exhibit before, during, and after interviews that stand between them and job offers. Based on candid insights from real-life employers, and featuring a foreword by Richard Nelson Bolles, bestselling author of "What Color Is Your Parachute?", this book helps job hunters take control of how they come across to the people in charge of hiring. From "20 Things You Should Never Do" to a "Would You Hire You?" test, "This Is How to Get Your Next Job" helps readers show hiring managers who they are and why they're the perfect fit for the job they seek.

Andrea Kay is a career consultant and syndicated columnist who has helped tens of thousands of people find new jobs and take charge of their careers. She is the author of six books including Life's a Bitch and Then You Change Careers, and her syndicated column, "At Work," appears weekly in more than 80 newspapers and countless websites, including the online edition of USA Today. She's been interviewed in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Forbes, Money, Kiplinger Personal Finance, and Redbook, and on radio and TV across the United States.
