Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Reasons Why I Love Reading

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Well, it's been a while. I think the last time I participated in a Top Ten Tuesday was back in April. This week's topic talks about a blogger's love of reading. As an avid reader since childhood, this topic is a perfect way to explore my love of the written word.

Top Ten Reasons Why I Love Reading

  1. To learn about new places - whether it be through fiction or non-fiction, reading teaches me about places I never heard of or only have a passing knowledge of.
  2. To discover different perspectives - books that make me consider a different perspective appeal to me.
  3. To appreciate the skill of other authors - as a writer, I enjoy seeing how other authors approach their art; how they weave together all the pieces to create an engaging story.
  4. To see if I can figure out the clues - I love mysteries of all kinds, and I hope I discover the villain before the end of the story.
  5. To laugh or be inspired when I am blue - life can be challenging, but if I read something light and funny or a book that inspires me, then I feel better.
  6. To improve my craft - while I don't read a ton of writing craft books, I do browse the internet for articles and skim through references to further develop my writing.
  7. To discover new to me or debut authors - thanks to blogging, I have discovered several new to me authors that have become favorites or debut authors whose books encourage me to look for future books.
  8. For market research - knowing what is popular in the market or what a publisher or agent represents is the first step in figuring out where to submit my work.
  9. To read more about historical events and people - I've always been a huge non-fiction fan and lover of history; books allow me to read more about people and events that interest me.
  10. It gives me a hobby that connects me to others - when I started blogging in 2007, I had no idea how it would explode into a whole community of bloggers and influencers who share my love of the written word.
