Imagine my glee when I realized I didn't book myself into any reviews for the month of February. Tee-hee!!! So, I decide to open this short cozy up and get started.

Sarah Garland, a retired homicide detective who’s gone through a painful divorce, seems to have found her peace at last, as a coffeeshop owner, in the sleepy (and freezing) small town of Snow Falls, Alaska. What she didn’t expect, was for her past life to catch up with her. Or, for her new life as a mystery writer to inspire a deadly killer to target her.

Yet, when the killer leaves a frightening clue-a creepy snowman, donning a leather jacket and eating a peppermint candy cane, left in front of her cabin-Sarah begins to suspect Conrad Spencer, the new detective in town, who is pursuing a murderer of his own. Soon, it becomes obvious that the sleuths would have to join forces, in order to catch the killer.

Sarah and Conrad must put their tragic pasts behind them and find out who’s after her…before the trail becomes frozen.

"Oh, dear," Amanda said, terrified. Scrambling to her feet, she looked around, saw a broom, grabbed it and then hurried out into the snow to protect her friend. "I'll protect you!" she yelled at Sarah over the screaming wind, holding the broom in her hands like a baseball bat.

I closed the door behind me, eliminating the only light in the vast entryway. Every blind in the house seemed to be closed, with the curtains tightly shut. It was an eerie reminder of how I started the day by breaking into Zeke Wallace's house.

I'm not very hungry, but I don't want to hurt Pete's feelings. He went to all the trouble of ordering Chinese food--even my favorite sweet-and-sour chicken--so the least I can do is sit down here and have some with him. I don't know why we can't eat at the kitchen table, though. I really don't like listening to the news while we eat. It's never good news, and it gives me a headache.

Contemporary culture focuses so much on the need to have a great sex life. They say sex sells, and it certainly is used to sell everything from hamburgers and cars to vacations and electronics. Yet when it comes to the way media represents sex--from TV to Oscar-winning films to porn--the pleasure of women is presented as secondary, if presented at all.

It's been a while since I participated in this meme. Hopefully I can keep it going at least through the summer. My first choice is from one of my favorite authors of southern fiction. This is a continuation of her series set in Chattahoochee, Florida. I reviewed the first and second books. I own two other of the author's books set in the same place but they have different main characters.

Jake swung open the paneled door. A squat woman waited on the other side of the screened door. Genevieve Presley Alcott. No need to second guess the name. Her initials were monogrammed on her paisley red Vera Bradley handbag. First thought: she looks like someone's somewhat overdressed grandmother.  Second thought: Red Riding Hood had mistaken the big bad wolf for her kindly grandmother.
