Interview with Eden Robins, Author of Gold: Heart of a Warrior

Eden Robins believes in second chances. She’s been lucky enough to have a few in her life and knows there’s a magic in seizing the moment to try again. As a mentor and founder of A Wholehearted ME, her heart’s purpose is to guide people into living as their full, innate, creative potential. As a writer, her heart leads her to inspire joy and hope in her readers through her tales. Creating stories about people courageously living, loving, and experiencing life true to themselves, no matter how messy it gets, are the ones Eden wants to write and will keep writing for you…and for her. Connect with Eden at https://linktr.ee/edenrobins and check out her blog https://awholeheartedme.com/blog

Thank you for interviewing me on The Book Connection! I’m excited to share more about my writing and myself.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and lived in the Boston area when I was very young. I also spent some time in Guam when my dad was stationed there while in the Navy, before heading back to the Boston area again, and then on to a short stint in Colorado before settling in Arizona. My family moved to Phoenix when I was eight, and I spent the remainder of my childhood and teenage years there. I went to college in South Africa for a couple of years, then returned to Arizona and completed my college education there.

When did you begin writing?

I’ve written informally since I was in grade school. Diaries and journals, then some articles for my high school newspaper. It was only after writing my first novel that I realized I wanted to make writing a career.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

Yes. All of the above. I write whenever I can, for as long as I can. I’m committed to writing Monday through Friday of each week, but if I can get more in, I do.

What is this book about?

Gold: Heart of A Warrior is a story of second chances, and the first book in a series about a modern day shero’s journey into Greek mythology.

Dora Alexander learns on her twenty-fifth birthday she’s Pandora reborn, reincarnated from the woman responsible for opening the Jug of Woes and releasing misery into the world. This time around, The Fates want her to team up with a cranky, know-it-all ancient warrior to fight demons, or be sent back to Tartarus, forever, her memory wiped from the mind of any who knew her. Her goal as an empathic healer is to help people, not hurt them. Creating The Healing Garden wellness center was her plan to do just that. But as they say, when woman plans, the Gods laugh. Boy, were they laughing.

What inspired you to write it?

Retelling the myth of Pandora in Gold: Heart of a Warrior arose from a process I call “relatable remembering” because this young woman’s story is truly a universal tale. Who doesn’t make mistakes? Who doesn’t live according to the consequences of those mistakes, including sometimes being defined by them in a way that’s neither fair nor accurate?

Pandora was destined to open the Jug of Woes. Zeus wanted to punish mankind and used a woman without much power as his pawn to do just that. And yet, when he got what wanted; the King of Gods still penalized the one who helped him get it. So not fair!

I began thinking about the way this myth related to life, and how its truths spilled into not only the stories of people I knew, but also my own. How many of us have made mistakes in our lives and had to endure living bound by the constraints of that mistake because others put us in a box of their making, and we allowed it to become our reality?

Pandora’s story made me angry. I felt compelled to tear open the box she’d been forced into and give her a second chance. That led to me writing Gold: Heart of a Warrior. Instead of forever being known as the evil, disgraced woman who ruined the world, I decided to write a story where Pandora was offered redemption, and the chance to create a new life for herself, on her own terms.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

My writing journey has been a learning experience, both in terms of developing my craft as a writer, and my own personal evolution. It’s also been a trek of getting lost for a while and then, eventually, finding my way back.

My first book, a sci-fi futuristic romance entitled, Never Until Tomorrow, was published in 2000. Writing “The End” on the last page of that story was the act that made me decide to take writing seriously. While growing up, creativity had been my close and consistent companion, but up until finishing that first book, I had only considered writing a hobby to indulge in when I wasn’t working at my “real job”. I thought getting a business degree, opening a bakery with my husband, and raising three children was the real life I was supposed to be living, while writing was just for fun.

Never Until Tomorrow came about when I lost my paternal grandfather. After he died, I kept wishing I could go back to a time before he passed away and spend more time getting to know him. That thought stayed with me for months and the urge to write about it grew inside me until one night I sat down at my computer and started typing. Being able to translate what was in my heart to paper in this way was not just cathartic, it was also an epiphany. I realized not only how much I loved the writing process, but also that I wanted to do it for the rest of my life.

Once that decision was made, I found publishers interested in my work and had the privilege of sharing my stories with others. Nine novels later, my husband and I separated, then divorced and I simply stopped writing. I just couldn’t seem to put the words together, except for sporadic, distracted scribblings that didn’t amount to much. It was like my creativity had suddenly dried up and disappeared. It was incredibly frightening to think that the one thing which had been my constant companion and guide since I was little had suddenly deserted me. A decade later and lots of lessons learned, my creative spark returned, and I began to write in earnest again. I realize now that my creativity had never left me, it had just shifted to a different part of my life that needed my attention. But that’s another story for another time.

If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

Yes. I would have trusted myself and my creativity more, letting both be my lifeline and guide in whatever form they needed to take.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

You can find Gold: Heart of a Warrior at: Champagne Book Group, Amazon, BarnesandNoble, Kobo or my website.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Write. Keep writing. In my opinion, when one is just starting out, it’s so important to focus on putting the words on the page rather than trying to create a perfect masterpiece. There’s a magic that comes from simply getting the story out of your head and on paper. And the more you write, the stronger the magic. Know what that magic produces? Better writing. Know what else it does? Creates more ideas. Simply put, writing begets writing, which begets better writing, which begets more creative writing, which begets better, more creative writing, which leads to the masterpiece one wanted to write in the first place. It’s definitely important to begin with the end in mind, but only to the extent that one doesn’t back themselves into a corner. Knowing what one wants without worrying about how one will get it is key. Focus on one step at a time and trust that the magic of writing will get you there.

What is up next for you?

Thank you for asking! Since the release of Gold: Heart of a Warrior last April, I've completed book two in the Gold series, entitled, A Warrior’s Peace, and recently started the formal editing process. I’m excited to share Dora’s continuing shero’s journey with all of you! And watch for the paperback version of Gold: Heart of A Warrior heading your way in March 2024!

Because I love the holidays so much, I’ve created a modern-day fairytale anthology entitled Happily Ever After Holidays that’s now available on Amazon. Need a little myth to remind you of the magic of the season? These three retellings will definitely put you in the mood!

Is there anything you would like to add?

As the founder of A Wholehearted ME, a movement dedicated to deepening self-awareness and creative, authentic living, I developed a blog called Living the Path. It's about my exploration of wholehearted living and the many twists and turns I find along the way. My more than twenty-year journey of creative exploration, self-development and growing awareness led me to start an effort dedicated to coming home to the creative self and the powerful possibilities in discovering who and how one can choose to be in the world.

Through A Wholehearted ME, I now get to not only write stories about characters courageously living, loving, and experiencing life true to themselves, no matter how messy it gets, I’m also lucky enough to have the opportunity to help guide women on their own real life shero’s journey back to their authentic destiny. Author Interview and Giveaway: Smoke in Her Eyes by Anna Blefrage

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests: history and writing. Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga, set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy which is set in 14th century England.  She has recently released Smoke in Her Eyes, the second in a new series, The Wanderer, a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense with paranormal and time-slip ingredients.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in South America which has left me trilingual and with a permanent fondness for spicy food and salsa rhythms.

When did you begin writing?

I have always written. Deep down in one of my various boxes I have kept the notebooks in which I wrote my first stories. From madly paced adventure stories featuring lady knights (me) to a very melodramatic love story set in the 17th century (I was sixteen…) they will never, ever see the light of the day. But I can’t throw them away, and some of the various plot lines have popped up in my recent books, albeit severely revamped.

What is this book about?

Undying love. I sort of like writing about that…Of course, I make things complicated: Smoke in Her Eyes is about two people who first met and loved 3 000 years ago. Things didn’t end well that time round, mainly due to a powerful prince who wanted the girl for himself. Since then, they have fallen through time, Jason desperately trying to find his Helle in one fruitless life after the other. And then, finally, thet end up in the same time frame. Unfortunately, that ancient prince is here as well, just as determined to ensure they never get to the Happily Ever After…

What inspired you to write it?

Not sure, really. I’ve always had a fascination with the fall of Troy, and Jason’s and Helle’s first life plays out when the fall of Troy is as yet a memory, not a legend. I also love Greek myths, hence Jason being named Jason after that most famous of Argonauts, and Helle named after the princess who fell off the golden ram just over the Hellespont, because she was so entranced by the song of the mermaids below.

Greek myths are usually very much about fate, about the futility of attempting to avoid your destiny. I think Jason recognizes himself in that, what with all those lives he has spent looking for Helle.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

It’s available on Amazon, both in pb and as an e-book. http://myBook.to/SmIHE
The paperback version is also available through other channels and can also be ordered from my publisher, Troubador. https://www.troubador.co.uk/bookshop/romance/smoke-in-her-eyes/

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

One piece of advice? Ha! I have a whole booklet… But right at the top of my list are three things:
1: Write the book you want to read, not the book you think the market wants.
2: Invest in a professional edit. To not do so is to short-change all your future readers/buyers and it is a MYTH that you can edit your own work, no matter how good you are at spelling and grammar
3: Invest in a professional cover. It doesn’t cost that much, but makes a lot of difference when it comes to making your book visible to potential readers.
Obviously, 2 and 3 above are mainly directed at Indie writers 😊

What is up next for you?

Well, the final instalment in my series about Jason and Helle is due out this autumn, so I need to do a final polish. I am also working on a new series set in 13th century Wales and Spain as well as like five other WIPs. I like multi-tasking, I guess 😊

Hermetica: Myths, Legend, Poems by Paul Kiritsis--Author spotlight

About the book:

Hermetica: Myths, Legends, Poems is a homeric journey into the night where the world of dreams and symbols has sculpted our mythological past.

Using the language of alchemy, astrology and magic this tome seeks to reconstruct the lost bonds between old myths contained in the oral folklore of Ancient Egypt; stories which once served as the backbone of a religion centred around Osirian ritual - the cosmic cycles of death, dismemberment and resurrection.

It also contains a sequel to the popular Middle Egyptian tale, The Story of the Shipwrecked Sailor; a visual and dramatic interpretation of the passion of Osiris; an astrological allegory of the war between the heavenly bodies and a hermetic saga between a white witch and her mirror. The accompanying collection of poetry is a homage to the alchemy of love.

Read the Reviews:

Kiritsis is a very creative and talented writer. He obviously is wonderfully educated in the subjects he writes of and this definitely shines through in his stories. Not unlike ancient oral and written literature, Kiritsis’ stories also have lessons to teach. His words will whisk you back to a time long ago and keep you there until the last page is turned. - Rebecca Reads

Experienced author & poet Paul Kiritsis is back with "Hermetica: Myths, Legends, Poems". A look at the ancient world, filled with the history and legends of how these ancient traditions came into being, and the mourning that due to certain circumstances, some of these ancient traditions and literature are lost. A deftly composed and compiled collection, "Hermetica: Myths, Legends, Poems" is a top pick for literature readers in general, and for community library collections catering to them. Teardrop: I hid your essence, that small bundle of boy, As the vowel in a harmonic minor, And floated it along the scale/ of my silent consonants-//Seducing midnight/with folk songs/Of love found/And love lost.//Warming her heart/with bittersweet words/That delivered us/As a teardrop/From her eye. - Midwest Book Reviews

About the author:

On the 15th July 1979, under the protective lap of the Cancerian sky, Paul Chris Kiritsis was born in the jewel called Melbourne, Terra Australis. At the age of 26, he can say that only now does he feel that he has started to come into his own. With a background in the behavioural sciences and arts, the cosmos within the human mind and the ways by which it defines itself are what interest him the most.

There is nothing in this universe more interesting than us humans; period. Through the ever-changing ebbs and flows of his life, many things have come and gone though one thing has remained constant - his writing. This love affair between pen, paper and soul comes as naturally to him as what swimming might to our intellectual counterparts in the ocean, dolphins. The introverted nature of most poets, songwriters and authors is balanced by the written form, a vehicle of external expression through which psychic equilibrium is maintained. Writing is an outlet by which they express themselves silently to audiences who at that creative moment do not exist. Despite that it is an ongoing process of personal and spiritual development, in itself it is evolutionary and marks important events in the life of the individual.

On the top left-hand corner of the website’s home page you will see his logo, Isidus Entertainment. It is quite simply a symbolic representation of his own nature; in other words, it is he. In the centre of the logo is a scarab or dung beetle representing two concepts. The first of these is the astronomical constellation of Cancer, as in the ancient world it was envisioned as a beetle and not a crab. The second is rebirth, stemming from the Ancient Egyptian conception of the sun's daily renewal as the morning child-god and depicted as a scarab with outstretched wings. Dung beetles were seen to emerge during the Nile inundation, a time when ‘life’ came back to Egypt after the drought and that is why they came to be so closely associated with rebirth.

Protecting the spirit of Cancer is the circle or round of life symbolic of eternity. On each side of the circle there are two lions. They are both metaphors of the solar force and the double horizon. On the left stands the lion of the past and on the right the future. Underneath their torsos the moon is depicted in its two extreme phases. Why the moon? It is his planetary ruler and the heavenly body which most represents his life. He have written many pieces on the moon. Why these two phases in particular? Humanity, at the individual and collective level, is in constant evolution. The full moon shines with the visual expression of cosmogenesis and the dark moon with the unseen forces at work that have brought it into being.

Underneath are the Greek letters, ‘ISIDUS’, referring directly to the cult of the Egyptian Goddess Isis – why Isis? His soul is Egyptian. Isis is not only a feminine representation of providence, she is the creative principle in the universe personified. Why in Greek letters? His blood is Hellenistic. The whole logo is guarded by the serpents of eternity. A serpent sheds its skin and re-emerges anew. This is exactly the way ideas change through time, altering in form but never in essence.

The whole logo looks exactly like a set of scales that could tip either towards yesterday or tomorrow – history repeats itself.

Within academic study, his favourite areas are mythology, theosophy, history, philosophy and English literature. He has completed degrees in the behavioural sciences and professional writing. He hopes to continue onto a Phd in English in the not too distant future.

Many of his poems have appeared in periodic anthologies. Origin: Poems from the crack of dawn is his first collection of poetry. Hermetica: Myths, Legends, Poems marks his first literary collection. The upcoming Shades of Aphrodite due out in late 2008 is a memoir/autobiography. His interests outside of the academic arena are plentiful and include fitness instruction, body sculpting, music, thrillseeking, travelling and meeting seductive people from all walksoflife.
