THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Do you read more than one book at once? Why, or why not?

Hard to believe another week has passed. I've been breezing my way through Touches of Time by LoRee Peery. In addition, I pre-ordered a copy of Heroines of Mercy Street, which I am eagerly awaiting. Should be here in two days.

My only frustration remains my lack of reading time. With work and home life, little time is left to read. I find myself tired often, so I fall asleep without getting a chance to read. Are any of you experiencing the same thing?

I truly long for the days when I was a stay-at-home mom who could read for a couple of hours each night.

As for what I think I will read next, I'm hoping for An Amish Market, a short story collection with a story by Vannetta Chapman.

And do I read more than one book at once? Not usually, but lately I am because I have an audio book in the car and am reading one at home.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What would you say is the best children’s book you’ve ever read?

Hope you all had a nice week. We had our first major snowstorm of the season. The kids were glad for an extra day off from school. We are due for more snow tonight, so they might end up with an extended weekend. 

Right now, I am in the middle of reading Touches of Time by LoRee Peery. Doesn't it sound wonderful?

A decades-old unsolved homicide.

A grieving single mother-to-be.

A cold-case investigator.

Sarah Bishop goes through her deceased mother’s belongings and becomes immersed in the details of her grandfather’s unsolved homicide. Determined to find who was responsible, for the sake of her unborn baby, Sarah vows to seek out the answers her mother had failed to find.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Do you have any particular “quirks” when it comes to reading (eg. taking notes while reading, etc)?

I'm trying to keep up with the blog memes I enjoy.

Right now I am reading, The Last Dinner Party by Carly M. Duncan. I was supposed to review it this month, but my reading time is a lot less than it used to be a couple of years ago. I'm hoping to increase it a bit this year.

Welcome to the first Musing Mondays post of 2016! I hope you all had a great new year. My plan is to blog at least three times a week. It all depends on how many houses I want to sell. :)  I'll definitely never run out of reading material to talk about.

Staying in line with my writing goals, I bought some resources for children's writers last week. They arrived swiftly from Amazon and I already skimmed through them. One I will probably return, but these two are staying.

As to the answer to this week's question, it really depends. If I have reviews due, then I start a new book the minute I'm done with the last one. If the reviews are not time sensitive, then I usually wait a day or two so I can consider what I've read. I try to write up the book review while it's still fresh in my mind.

Just another thing to love about this time of year is the books we're hoping to get from someone or the ones we can gift to ourselves. Usually, I won't spend a lot on myself this time of year because our focus is on the kids. So, that means used book sales for me. I don't mind.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION:What makes a book really enjoyable for you? And, conversely, what would turn you off about a book?

It's been a lounge around the house in my slippers time since the church bazaar on Saturday. I am reading and blogging more than I was before and it's been a nice respite from working so hard all year.

Wow! Great question this week. What makes a book really enjoyable to me? Characters I adore or at least can care about; sympathetic characters--especially villains whose life circumstances turned them into the people they are presently in the book; stories where the main character experiences substantial growth and coming of age novels; a satisfying end--even if it's a sad one.

What turns me off? Inconsistencies in characters--unless there is a good reason for it; surprise endings that make no sense; repetition, poor editing and a writing style that doesn't engage me.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Why do you read?

Thanksgiving is almost here, so I've decided after a year of working tremendously hard to grow my real estate business, it is time for a break. Though I have a couple of things to wrap up, for the most part I plan to stick around the homestead and focus on what I love to do: cook, decorate (I'm not really good at it), and read. 

So, why do I read? Like I can imagine many book lovers saying, reading is my favorite pastime. I rarely watch TV, so when I have time to myself I am either reading or writing. Though I stick mostly to genres I've enjoyed for decades, I'm not opposed to reaching outside of my comfort zone to read other genres. Right now, my office is covered in books I've yet to read--some of which I will save and others of which will be donated afterwards. 

My love of reading is something I am truly thankful for this time of year. 

Do you remember the book that first grabbed you and turned you into a lifelong reader? I wish I could, but the only books from my childhood I recall are The Poky Little Puppy and The Little Engine That Could. My Nancy Drew books were probably the first ones I can identify as creating in me an urge to keep moving book to book through a series.

Here's looking forward to many more years of reading for all of us.

Hard to believe we are halfway through November. Time sure is flying.

This has been a tough blogging year for me. I truly haven't read as much as I would have liked and I'm really missing it. My hope is that 2016 is a bit slower. I'm pulling back a bit on my volunteering so that I don't feel like I am rushing around so much.

And now, here's one of the overdue reviews that needed to be written.

A riveting, emotional story can be found in Taken Away by Patricia Yager Delagrange.

When Jessee Bradford, a respected veterinarian, comes home to find his wife and infant daughter missing, he's not sure what to think. Did someone kidnap Serena and Sofia? Did they just disappear?

After months of fruitless searching, Jessee relocates to his grandparents' home in Iowa to take over his grandfather's veterinary practice. Here he meets Laura, an equestrian. Laura has a sad story all her own, but she opens up to Jessee and they fall in love.

Their romance is suddenly up in the air when Jessee sees a painting at a gallery opening by an artist known only as She that reminds him of Serena's work. He knows he must find out is Serena and Sofia are still alive if he and Laura are every going to be truly happy.

If there were ever a book that is filled with emotions, this one is it. We meet Jessee and Serena in college, but things swiftly move to their courtship and marriage. The reader is drawn into what they think will be a wonderful romance, but suddenly, Serena and Sofia are gone and Jessee is left to pick up what is left of his life. He rebuilds his life--though hoping one day he will learn what happened to his wife and daughter--all to have his life totally turned upside down again by falling in love and then thinking he might have found Serena.

What the author did so well here is make Jessee, Laura, and the other characters so realistic. I have to say that some characters did not attract sympathy at all, which is fine. While not necessarily a unique plot, the author made this idea her own by the elements she put into it. The sub-stories that ran alongside Jessee's added a great deal of depth to the book.

As a mom, one part of the ending didn't satisfy me (I can't share more without giving away too much), but the lover of romance in me definitely thought the ending was superb. I will be sure to check out more of Delagrange's novels.

Readers of this blog will know the answer to this week's question: I definitely review books. While I have to admit that was never my intention when I started blogging, I quickly learned that reviewing books is fun and has helped me discover authors I might never have heard about otherwise.

In the early days of Pump Up Your Book, I began hosting their authors. That's how I got into reviewing books. Then I realized how much I enjoyed it. Eight years later, I am still here. I guess when I make it to ten years I will have to throw a huge blogiversary party.

What a fun question for this week. Can't say I've read a lot of horror lately. When I was younger I read Stephen King occasionally, but I prefer less gore these days.

My favorite book of all time remains The Stand by Stephen King, so maybe some horror is in my future. I didn't think I would ever read dystopian fiction after high school, but The Hunger Games, changed all that.

My answer to this week's question is an easy one: Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables. I've always seen a bit of myself in this curious, imaginative orphan who had an imaginary friend to make up for the lack of any real friends.

Watching Anne blossom from girl to young woman always tugged at my heart. She got into more than her fair share of scrapes thanks to her impulsive behavior and loose tongue. We definitely share that in common.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Is a rainy day likely to inspire you to read?

Happy Monday, everyone. Hope you all had a nice weekend. I took some well-deserved time off from real estate to enjoy my family. Did a bit of gardening too.

I'm currently reading this middle grade novel that is both exciting and funny.

It's about kids trying to outwit a villain who has developed a machine that sucks the goodness out of people's brains in an attempt to wipe out goodness around the world.

I'm also listening to the fifth book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix. 

Like I said last week, I am really enjoying this series. Occasionally my daughter ruins the plot for me, but I am okay with it. Not sure I want to see all the death that is to come, though. 

As for this week's question, rainy days don't necessarily inspire me to read. Having available time does. I'm doing my best to get back into the habit of reading every night, but I've been falling asleep early because I've been working a lot.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Have you ever decorated your house around your love of books? Would you?

I simply have to admit it out loud--I love the Harry Potter series! I only starting listening to it a few months ago because the library had the first book on CD. I've now listened to the first four books in the series and have a hold on the fifth book (waiting impatiently for it to arrive from the library.)

It went without saying that reading this series would happen some day. I just knew it wouldn't be during the craze of it all because I don't read popular books; something about being one of the crowd that goes against my grain. Instead, I waited for the entire series to come out and be made into movies, for the e-books to be released, and two of my three kids to read the them before I even attempted it.

Fantasy not being my favorite genre, it wasn't that hard to avoid the books. Now that I have read a few, however, I can see what all the hype is about. I wrote about my epiphany in this post. Perhaps the thing I admire most about Rowling is her ability to increase the danger and tension with each book. It is also amazing to realize how little backstory is included in subsequent books: the author gives you a few glimpses into Harry's past and previous events, but doesn't bog the reader down with it. The series is worth reading to help me learn how to do that, never mind the sheer enjoyment I am getting out of them.

In answer to this week's question, that is a no. I actually wanted to do a book lover's theme here and my hubby gave me an emphatic no in response. I guess I will have to live with just having a reading room one day.

This is a tough toss up between library and museum, but ultimately I would need to go with library because there is no way I could ever get bored. There would always be something new to look at, read, or do. While museums do their best to keep things fresh for their patrons, they have mainstay exhibits, and I fear over time I would get weary of seeing the same things.

Favorite book? There are so many. I guess if I had to pick one it would be The Stand by Stephen King. Ultimate good versus ultimate evil, faith, the supernatural, and the rebuilding of society. Pretty neat stuff.

I recently finished reading The White Knight, the Lost Kingdom, and the Sea Princess by Judy Carlson. Like young adult fantasy has been influenced by the popularity of Harry Potter, Christian fantasy has been influenced by The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis for decades.

After the brutal murder of the royal family a decade earlier, Prince Lael fights for the freedom of the Lost Kingdom. Along his journey, he meets a mysterious Sea Princess who quickly captivates him. Two cousins from Minnesota are dropped into the mystical realm and join the fight to free the Sea Princess while searching for their way back home.

This is a thrilling Christian adventure story sure to appeal to many. The battle against the dark forces will thrill and the romantic element will touch hearts. Eloquently written, Carlson has developed a story with numerous plot points seamlessly woven to create a fascinating tale. Lovers of mythical fantasy will appreciate this one.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Do you read in the water (bathtub, pool, etc)? Why, or why not?


Today is definitely a whining post day. I miss reading. There is absolutely no time lately. Right now, it's 2:20 a.m. and I know I have to get up at 7:00. That means I better go to bed and catch a few hours of rest before the work day starts.

My review of Guilt Free Motherhood: A 5-Step Guide to Reclaiming Your Time, Health & Well-Being is overdue and I have to read four more books before the end of October. How am I going to manage that? Sigh! I love my job, but man, the real estate market is crazy right now. People are buying.

So, now that I have cried a bit, I hope you are reading some great books and enjoying them.

Updated: In answer to this week's question, I most definitely read in the tub. I would never get reading accomplished otherwise--which is part of the problem I mention from above. I used to bath every night to relax. Right now, I am staying up so late I plop into bed right away and take a shower in the morning.

In anticipation of Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchman, I decided to borrow an audiobook of To Kill a Mockingbird. Between the dialect of the reader making it hard to understand and the fact that barely anything happens for six tracks, I'm a bit disappointed. Scout is in school and has just gotten her hands whacked with the ruler for trying to explain about Walter Cunningham. Dill seems to be a fun character, but again, I am waiting for some action to start. Is it because I'm not reading the printed version? Help me understand.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION:Are you able to read while in a vehicle (in motion)? Have you always been this way?

This is a neat questions and I am curious of others are the same as me. When I was younger, and even probably into my early twenties--I couldn't read in the car without feeling sick and getting a headache. Now, it doesn't bother me at all. How is that possible?
