Interview: Alexandrea Weis, Author of Recovery

Joining us today is Alexandrea Weis, author of Recovery.  In college she studied nursing and went on to teach at a local university. After several years in the medical field, she decided to pick up the pen again and began her first novel To My Senses. Since that time she has writen several novels and sold two screenplays (White River and Blood Will Tell). Blood Will Tell is currently in pre-production with Buyer Group International. Her work has been critically acclaimed and is continually growing in popularity.

Her most recent book is Recovery, the second novel in the Nicci Beauvoir series.

Welcome to The Book Connection, Alexandrea. It's a joy to have you with us. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a registered nurse and a permitted wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries. My nursing experience helps me to care for orphaned and injured wildlife. My favorites are baby squirrels. As I am speaking to you now, I have one running around on my lap and attempting to eat my keyboard. I have a large menagerie of pets, including one very well tamed husband. I love animals and when I am not caring for wildlife, I try to get in a little writing on the side.  
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised New Orleans. I grew up in the French Quarter, Uptown, and then my family moved to a section of the city called Lakeview when I was about nine. I think growing up in such an eclectic town influenced my writing. So much history, and so many eccentric characters in one place, can only nurture an individual’s innate creativity.        
What is your fondest childhood memory?
I rode horses as a kid at a stable inside of City Park. It’s a huge park complex within New Orleans. My fondest memories are of heading out on my horse on a beautiful spring day and running him along the shores of the vast lagoon complex located within the park. There is nothing better than running an ex-race horse flat out on a beautiful spring day!
When did you begin writing?
I started writing at eight. I began with poetry and was always fascinated by how the right words on paper could evoke such emotion from people. I studied creative writing throughout high school and was really encouraged by my English teacher, June Wells. She always believed I was a writer, even when I thought I should become something a bit more practical.
Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?
I write a little n the mornings, but the bulk of my writing is at night. I like the quiet of the house after everyone has gone to bed and I can work uninterrupted.
What is this book about?

Recovery is the sequel to my first book, To My Senses. It takes place two years after the main character, Nicci, has suffered the loss of her love, David Alexander. Nicci learns David was killed because of her. Someone from her past in New Orleans murdered David out of jealousy over Nicci. She teams up with a corporate spy, and former friend of David’s, to hunt down the killer in ravages of post-Katrina New Orleans.  
What inspired you to write it?
The success of the first book and the love so many readers had for the characters, prompted me to continue the story. There was no sequel to my first book, but I really enjoyed writing the characters so much, I wanted the fun to continue. So I sat down and wrote Recovery. 
Who is your biggest supporter?
I can’t choose just one. I have been blessed with some really great friends, and a tolerant husband, who have encouraged me. I would not be here today with you if it were not for my amazing support group.   
Are you a member of a critique group? If no, who provides feedback on your work?
I am not a member of any critique groups, but I have one or two good friends who provide me with wonderful feedback on my books.
Who is your favorite author?

I don’t have an all time favorite, but I love Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming, Mary Renault, and Edgar Allen Poe.  
Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?
I don’t have an agent but I am always on the lookout for one!
Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?
Definitely bumpy. But I don’t think anything that is truly worthwhile is not without a few bumps. If you know this is something you have to do, then you will suffer through every pothole until you get to where you want to be. 
If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?
I don’t think any of the knowledge that I have gained would have changed any of my decisions. This path has been the most educational and the most fulfilling for me.

The movie rights for Recovery have been picked up by an independent production company out of Dallas, so up next for me will probably be the script for Recovery. And I am in the process of getting book III in the Nicci Beauvoir series ready. It is called Sacrifice and will be out in Spring 2012.

From Suffragettes to Snickering Witches to Jaguar Addams

For many years I had a storytelling trio, The Snickering Witches, and we three women got up on stage together to tell the old stories and make up the new ones. Our specific mandate was to tell stories of strange and/or powerful women, stories that often went untold, stories that were lost and needed to be found. We told goddess mythologies like Innana, Celtic tales like Dame Ragnell, Innuit stories of Skeleton Women, La Befana, the Christmas Witch and more. One of my favourites was the Spider Grandmother story of The Squash-Blossom women, who had the unfortunate disadvantage of having teeth in their vagina. Fortunately, Spider Grandmother helped them out of their dilemma in the best possible way.   

Moving from telling such stories into writing the stories of Jaguar Addams in The Fear Principle and the novels that follow was a natural transition. She’s a powerful and strange woman, a character who lives just this side of the spirit world. Primal and powerful, she deals with the criminals she’s assigned to by using her considerable psi capacities, and she does so in spite of the fact that such capacities are still both feared and ridiculed. More than once she’s called a witch. More than once she’s called much worse.

So Jaguar is in many ways an inevitable outgrowth of the old stories, and my interest in such characters is an inevitable outcome of the strong women I grew up with. My Italian immigrant grandmother bobbed her hair and marched with the Suffragettes, and bobbing her hair was considered the most scandalous of the two acts. She also snuck in to see the Pope when she went back to visit Italy, and stole a rosary for him to bless. My mother tells me every Hail Mary is worth four, but I’m not sure if that’s because it’s stolen, or because it’s blessed. 
Knowing my mother, it’s because the rosary is stolen. When I started the Snickering Witches she approved what I did, but said to me, “Just remember – I’m the real witch in the family.”

So whenever anyone gets twitchy around the strong women who people my books, I refer them to her and my grandmother, who will have , I’m sure, some interesting responses to give. 

Barbara Chepaitis is the author of 8 published books, including The Fear Principle featuring Jaguar Addams (Wildside Press), and the critically acclaimed Feeding Christine and These Dreams. Her first nonfiction book, Feathers of Hope, is about Berkshire Bird Paradise and the human connection with birds. Nine hours before the police arrived, Anthony Winter stood, barefooted and wild, on the narrow front porch of the house he shared with his mother. The painted wooden planks were damp and cool beneath his feet, but he hardly noticed. In his right hand he held a fallen maple leaf up to a sun that was just breaking the horizon. In his left he held his phone. He squinted at the leaf, marveling at its deep blood-orange color, amazed and happy that nature could make such a thing from what had, only a few weeks earlier, been emerald green, and before that, deep lime, and before that, a tight, tiny bundle of a bud on a spindly limb, waving in a North Carolina spring breeze. Amelia’s voice, when she answered his call, was lazy with sleep. It was a Monday, her day to sleep a little later than she could the rest of the week. Interview: J.J. Hebert, Author of Unconventional

Joining us today is J.J. Hebert, author of the Christian novel, Unconventional. I usually write up a short bio at the beginning of each interview, but I really liked his, so I'm stepping out of the way.

J. J. Hebert is a writer. Surprising, huh? He has written fifty-two novels, including the immensely successful, award-winning Willard’s Heart. J. J.’s also an archaeologist, and he recently unearthed an ancient religious scroll in Jerusalem that, in time, will prove absolutely nothing about anything important. He presently resides in Yemen, where he enjoys being the richest man in the land.

Where did you grow up?

In the backwoods of NH, right in front of a mountain where my friends and I used to play lots of wiffle ball, football (and other sports), and we even created movies with an old VHS camcorder. Those were good times!

When did you begin writing?

Long ago in elementary school. Ha... I started writing with publishing in mind somewhere around 2003, while I was working on my first novel, Defiance Rising, which hasn’t been published.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I seem to be more creative at night but I can write any time.

What is this book about?

Unconventional focuses on James Frost, a young janitor who decides to pursue his dream of becoming a published author. His journey from mopping floors to finding love, God, and literary stardom is inspirational and quite entertaining.

I wanted to inspire others.

Interview: Hermina Krista Pettiford, Author of Surrendered Balance

Joining us today is Hermina Krista Pettiford, author of Surrendered Balance Daily Living for the Modern Christian Woman. She is the women’s ministry leader in her local church – New Covenant Tabernacle located San Diego, CA where she lives with her family. She has a B. A. in Biblical Studies from Southern California Seminary.

Welcome to The Book Connection, Hermina. We are thrilled to have you with us.
What is your fondest childhood memory?

I have many but one that stands out is my first trip to Disneyland. We have a large family. There were nine of us growing up, six girls and three boys. I am the youngest girl. We all took a train ride from San Diego to Orange County where Disneyland is located - dad, mom, and all of us. It was great. I remember the train ride more than being at Disneyland. It was wonderful looking at all the beautiful scenery as we went by. I love trains.

When did you begin writing?
I began writing after I became and adult, about the age of 21. It was like therapy to write what I was feeling. After I became a Christian I really began to write, this is how I pour out my heart to God and how I make a record of personal promises for Him and prayer requests to Him. Reading was my first love. I began to really enjoy reading at about the age of ten after I read The Diary of Anne Frank. It was a real story about a real person that ended in a real tragedy. This touched me in a way that caused me to love reading. After becoming a Christian I found myself writing more than I read.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

I write when I can sneak a few moments. I’m always busy.
What is this book about?

The book is about balancing life for busy women, however, I’ve come to realize that this is a universal message. Men and children need it too. So many people have reached out and asked me to write a version of Surrendered Balance for everyone. People are balancing so much these days - home, work /career, staying fit, ministry, friendships, family, and our most important our relationship with God, and time for ourselves, all of this with the distractions of the modern world today. Surrendered Balance was written to give new insight and new strategies for fitting everything in without getting overwhelmed by anything. The things I discuss are not new; they are the basic principles of living a balanced life shared in a simple way. The strategies I share to fit all these valuable things into our lives without getting lost in the maze of modern life are, I believe, written with a fresh perspective.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My children are my biggest supporters.

Are you a member of a critique group? If no, who provides feedback on your work?

I am a member of the San Diego Christian Writers Guild and they have critique groups. Unfortunately I don’t get a chance to attend them as often as I’d like to so I asks friends and use a professional editor to look at my work.
Who is your favorite author?

I love the Bible, but other than that Francine Rivers.
Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

I don’t have an agent but I’m open to the possibility.
Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

It was interesting and educational. I self-published, opening my own small publishing house. I had everything done by professionals within the industry. I handled the business side of things including copyrights, Library of Congress, ISBN, finding a printer and a distributor, as well as setting a price for the book for wholesale and resale, marketing, and negotiating with bookstores to carry the book. 
If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

Yes, I would have priced the book differently. I love the business of books.

What is the best investment you have made in promoting your book?

Pump Up Your Book because it is doing a lot more for a lot less. The links and the articles can always be referred back to and re-promoted.
What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Write the book before you take the journey of trying to get published. Also, for self publishers have a professional edit done, you’ll be glad you did and a professional cover. Interior book design for consistency of page layout is just as important.
What is up next for you?

Next for me is more books - a devotional and a Surrendered Balance series. But above all that I am planning on transition into fulltime ministry. There is no greater joy for me than sharing the Gospel of the Kingdome of God, all are welcome!
Is there anything you would like to add?

My prayer and desire for Surrendered Balance and any other book that I will every write is that it will be more than just another good story; I hope it will help people achieve goals and solve problems. I designed the book to be an action tool that will not only give the reader good ideas but equip each person with a plan and a way to carry out that plan.

Book Review: Murder on the Interstate by Jean Henry Mead

Buckle up for a multi-state mystery that will have you turning pages faster than you can say "retirement."
In this third book of Jean Henry Mead's Logan & Cafferty mystery/suspense series, baby boomers Dana Logan and Sarah Cafferty grab the attention of homegrown terrorists when they stop to assist a car accident victim.

It doesn't take them long to discover the woman is dead, and it wasn't the accident that killed her. When Dana is kidnapped, she makes it her mission to figure out why this woman died and to bring her killer to justice. She has no idea what she has just stepped into.

Jean is a new client of mine through Pump Up Your Book. I haven't read the first two books in this series, but it isn't necessary because Murder on the Interstateis a perfect stand alone novel: just enough backstory to bring readers up to speed with the characters and lots of action and adventure to propel the current story forward.

Blended with humor and light romance, this mystery/suspense novel offers a well-written story, a unique plot, and superbly drawn characters. In addition to Dana and Sarah, Dana's daughter Kerrie, an investigative reporter, gets pulled in to help the ladies uncover clues. Toss in Walter, a love-smitten sheriff who is trying to make his relationship with Dana a more permanent one, and you have tension in many more ways than one.

What I love about Murder on the Interstate is that it portrays older woman as being resourceful, intelligent, and nowhere close to kicking up their feet and letting the world pass them by. Dana and Sarah are both sixty years old. While they might need a nap here or there, they still manage to get involved in car chases, escape kidnappers,and be thorns in the sides of the bad guys. Dana and Sarah's friendship is wonderfully portrayed, and it's nice to see their similiarities and differences blended so well.

If you're looking for adventure, if you're looking for a well-plotted mystery, if you're looking for a story with memorable characters, you don't need to look any further than Murder on the Interstate by Jean Henry Mead.
