Book Spotlight and Interview: Ultimate Duty by Marva Dasef

Remy Belieux, a woman born into a life of servitude on a repressive factory planet, is desperate for a different life. When she's accepted into the Space Service Academy, run by the organization that enslaves her planet, she discovers the truth behind generations of rebellion. Now, she must decide what to believe, where her ultimate duty lies, and fight for more than her life against impossible odds.

With the protective helmet off, they could now talk. Remy pulled down the rebreather mask. “You guys ready to get the hell off this planet?”

Her mom patted her on the shoulder and her muffled voice answered, “More than ready, sweetheart.”

“Well, hang on. This is definitely going to be a bumpy ride.” Remy replaced her rebreather over her face. Once they got moving, the shuttle’s environment equipment would kick in, and they could take off the masks.

Remy clicked on the communicator and tuned to a close-range channel. She set her infopad near the spare headset and switched it to an electroid number. She could hardly call it music since the robotic instruments reprogrammed themselves at random, making a weird variety of sounds. Remy shrugged. “I guess I just don’t get modern music.” Bill and Ted were monitoring the frequency though and would know that Remy was ready to take off. They’d come in for another diversion run so that she could escape the planet unnoticed. Anybody else who picked up the sound would, hopefully, ignore it.

Her father looked out the passenger side screen and tapped Remy’s arm. “Would three guys holding blasters running in this direction be of interest?”

Remy nodded and goosed the shuttle’s back jets to get them moving across the bleak landscape and into the sky. She boosted out of atmosphere so hard her mom suppressed a squeak. “Slow down!”

“Can’t, Mom. Just try to hang on.” Her mother nodded, her eyes wide with fear. Her dad, on the other hand, was grinning like a kid with a new toy. Remy thought he might not be too old to take pilot training.

PURCHASE ULTIMATE DUTY AT ETERNAL PRESS! THIS BOOK IS ALSO AVAILABLE AT AMAZON AND IN A KINDLE EDITION!

(Q) Thank you for joining us today. Why don't you tell everyone a bit about your book?

(A) ULTIMATE DUTY is space opera with a bit of romance. From the cover:

Remy Belieux, a woman born into a life of servitude on a repressive factory planet, is desperate for a different life. When she's accepted into the Space Service Academy, run by the organization that enslaves her planet, she discovers the truth behind generations of rebellion. Now, she must decide what to believe, where her ultimate duty lies, and fight for more than her life against impossible odds.

(Q) Where did the concept for the book come about?

(A) I wrote a short story titled "Pressure Drill" years ago. I got a good response from my critique group, but back then, submitting was entirely by snail mail. I didn't pursue publication. When I retired from real work, I hauled out the story, along with a few others and gave them a fresh look and rewrite. That first story, plus one more with the same main character were published. From that I expanded the story and it eventually became a novel.

(Q) How long did it take you to finish, from concept to final product?

(A) Only thirty years in the making, but I was busy doing other things most of those years.

(Q) Are there any authors that have influenced your own writing?

Mark Twain, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov. Plain, simple stories well told.

(Q) Do you have any favourite place where you feel your Muse is more apt to come and play while you write? Or perhaps you listen to music? If so, what do you listen to?

(A) I always write at home. I have a great setup in the family room, right next to the kitchen for quick snacking. I'm one of the few non-listeners. When I write, I find any music distracting. I've become used to the sound of the dishwasher, hubs running power equipment, and my cat vocally worrying about what's going on outside.

(Q) As a writer, what is your greatest fear?

That I actually suck, and I'm wasting my time.

(Q) What normally occupies your desk while writing?

(A) A stack of scratch paper, two pens, a ruler, a calendar, a calculator, my cell phone, stack files...Okay, this is boring. Just the usual desk stuff.

(Q) Do you have any new projects that you are working on? If so, what are they?

(A) Mostly, I'm wrapping up a lot of projects. I have a mystery/suspense, "Missing, Assumed Dead," coming out in July 2011 from MuseItUp, a tween fantasy titled "Bad Spelling" scheduled for October 2011. I'm also waiting on a response from MuseItUp to the two sequels of "Bad Spelling." I sure hope they take the whole series. Having books 2 and 3 without a publisher is worrisome. I'm in the note-taking stage of a sequel to Ultimate Duty.

(Q) What tip would you offer to a new writer who is just beginning their submission journey?

(A) Get your web presence set up RIGHT AWAY. Start with a blog, but I strongly encourage you to snag a website with your name as soon as possible. Get on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, but don't make enemies by expressing strong political or religious views. If you want to do that, use a pseudonym. You want to be prepared to jump out of the gate running when you sell your work.

I spent a twenty-five year dryspell without writing fiction. Since I wrote technical documentation for a living, I could hardly face a computer after work. But I'm sorry that I let it go for so long. Don't wait to write!

(Q) Please tell our readers where they can find you.

(A) All over creation and beyond.

Guest Blogger: How Do You Employ Creative Thinking to Solve Problems? by Author Sandy Sims

Today's special guest is Sandy Sims, author of How Frank Lloyd Wright Got Into My Head, Under My Skin and Changed The Way I Think About Thinking: A Creative Thinking Blueprint for the 21st Century.

"Do you feel overwhelmed by the pace of change, or powerless in the face of uncertainty? Do you wish you had a more useful point of view, or better strategies to cope? And even when you have obtained a dream or a goal, have you ever felt let down because it did not bring you the joy you thought it would? These are universal feelings, yet how we approach them is unique to each of us. Many years ago, author Sandy Sims found himself asking these same questions while directing a Honolulu advertising agency. Though considering himself to be quite average, he had cultivated two particularly useful traits – an abiding curiosity, and the desire to check things out for himself. A health crisis set off a cascade of events and a girlfriend-surgeon-turned-psychiatrist rewired his brain, sending him tumbling down the proverbial “rabbit hole” into new realms, where he became open to trying out new thinking patterns and recording the results. Over the next several years there was fire-walking, spoon-bending, and trips to Peru and Brazil where psychic surgeons stuck knitting needles through his liver — forcing him to accept almost in disbelief that we can be in different realities at the same time. Into his life poured mystics, shamans, a Kahuna, an ethnobotanist, channels, luminaries, scientists, and even an astronaut. The Caddy family, founders of the Scottish Findhorn Spiritual Community (noted for growing forty- and fifty-pound vegetables from the snow), regularly came and stayed with him. He cautiously tested these new thinking patterns, raising the bar slowly, and then testing again and again — until one compelling “aha” idea drove him to attempt to build a collection of the designs of one of America’s greatest architects, Frank Lloyd Wright. In so doing, he discovered that we are more the architects of our lives than we think; that what we call luck, chance, and coincidence are more design than not; and that “Invisible Partners” can make our ordinary lives extraordinary, no matter what the situation, when we are willing to engage, trust and nurture this partnership. This is a watershed time in history, an era in which we are becoming more aware of how powerful our minds are. It is a time when not only how to use our minds, but what to think about, will determine the elegance of our lives. A compelling read for those drawn to the journey of human potential." --Amazon description

How do you employ creative thinking to solve problems? by Sandy Sims

I feel that solving problems can best be approached by setting the right context. For me, this context is acknowledging that our connection to the great collective unconscious is a two way hook up, and from that bond all novel expressions arise.

The question then is how do you best access this unconscious mind?

The first step is to determine the key or core question surrounding the problem. There are many questions you could be asking but are they the basic question or questions surrounding the core question? A core question is not necessarily that obvious. For example you could be focused on acquiring some object like a house or car or different job because you think it will further you along a career path and that will make you happier. So the core question might not be how best to obtain the object of your immediate desire, but rather how to best find happiness. Focusing on this first may give you a much better direction.

Therefore my very first step is to ask intently and continuously to find the core question regarding any situation, trusting that the answer will appear whether definitively or intuitively. Next, use that core question as the contextual basis for all investigation to reach a next step or a final solution.

The second step is to determine when you are going to start asking this question. I maintain that you want to start this process in yourself as soon as you can-long before any formal meeting if at all possible.

This sets the contextual stage for the next step. It may even solve the problem. You may then engage with others using rationale analysis, brainstorming, and other techniques.

For example let us say you are a manager in a company and you have a chronic conflict between two employees to resolve. Your first inclination might be to think, “How can I help patch up a difference between these two people?” If however you ask yourself the core question, upon reflection it might be, “What is the best outcome for all concerned?” With this question as the basis then a broader stage is set: it not only involves the two employees but the welfare of the company as well. Maybe instead of trying to patch things up it becomes clear in the ensuing process that the best outcome is for one of the people to leave. The loss of that person might cause a certain immediate burden, but his or her replacement could turn out to be a huge improvement and the person leaving may have actually wanted a change but lacked the initiative.

Frequently a problem involves how to create something new which is going to involve brainstorming with others. In this case when you do meet, your unconscious mind has already been long at work. Then you are prepared as a participant for either a solution or the very next step as a member of the team.

Some of the greatest minds, no doubt, live their life in a perpetual question, such as “Is the contemplated action supporting my highest and best purpose?”

Sandy Sims was raised and educated in the South. After serving as Naval Officer and finishing graduate business school, he followed a dream to live in Honolulu where he built one of Hawaii's most successful advertising agencies.

The crisis of personal health and business setbacks opened the way to larger spiritual dimensions including a long association with the Caddy family, founders of the Findhorn Spiritual Community in Scotland His book,”How Frank Lloyd Wright Got Into My Head, Under My Skin And Changed The Way I Think About Thinking, A Creative Thinking Blue Print For the 21st Century,” is a memoir of his journey culminating in a 20 year project with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

He has collaborated with Psychiatrist, Kerry Monick MD, and authored Creative Thinking For The 21st Century, An Experiential Guidebook. Accepting the science that our intention does indeed affect the material world, it addresses what to be thinking about, how to shape these thoughts, and what might be the best way to avoid unintended consequences.

“I think a little bit of fun would do you some good.” He winked as he took one long stride toward her. He bent and scooped her from the chair.

“Tanner!” she shrieked, clutching his shoulders. His warm skin covered granite muscle underneath. She squirmed, but her movements pressed her harder against his chest as he lifted her into his arms.

He sauntered to the dock’s edge as if he had no care in the world. The water, crisp and clear loomed below.

Adrenaline spiking, she tucked her head against him. “You don’t want to do this.”

“I don’t?” A low, deep chuckle formed in his chest, vibrating against her cheek. “You can swim, right?”

“Yes, I can swim.”

“You just don’t like the idea of taking the plunge do you? Marriage or otherwise?”

“I have nothing against marriage…in general,” she defended. “And, this isn’t about my opinion regarding ‘the plunge’. This is about you,” she poked him in the chest, “tossing me into that cold water.”

“How do you know what it feels like until you try it?”

She lifted her head to offer a witty remark, but lost her breath as she found herself eye-level with Tanner’s sun-kissed neck. His scent, earthy and masculine surrounded her. She looked up. From this angle, his jaw-line appeared more defined, his features more chiseled, and his eyes a lighter shade of blue. She swallowed, but her dry mouth refused to moisten.

“Are you ready?” A small, faint scar melded into the creases beside his left eye as he smiled.

Flustered, she asked, “R-ready?” Her breathing came in quick, shallow gasps as her gaze travelled to his mouth. As good as it felt to be held in his strong arms, she wondered what it would feel like to have his lips pressed against hers.

Magical? Maybe. Out of the question? Definitely.

Author Interview: John Milton Langdon, Author of Against All Odds

John Milton Langdon is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and has a master’s degree in maritime civil engineering. Langdon retired and became a professional writer after an active and rewarding engineering career. Langdon lives in the Austrian town of Klagenfurt, which has a history stretching back to mediaeval times. Langdon has three children and five grandchildren from his first marriage and two step-sons from the second.

John’s latest book is an historical novel titled Against All Odds: Jason Smiley Stewart-My Life Story. We'll talk to him about his childhood, his writing, and what the future holds.

Welcome to The Book Connection, John. It's great to have you here. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers in London and I have a master's degree in maritime civil engineering. I was born in Britain and initially worked there but from 1972 until 2006, I was involved with project development in Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Nigeria. After an active and rewarding engineering career, I retired and became a professional writer. I have many interests including travel, the British canals, music and literature but hiking in the foothills of the Alps near my home is a preferred activity.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and grew up in Britain in the small coastal town of Barry in South Wales during the second world war.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

As a very small boy I remember sitting on a carpet in front of the living room fire on a cold winter evening and hearing the wind rampaging around the house. My father, mother, elder brother and my elder and younger sisters were also there in front of the fire. On the hearth was a big plate of sliced bread, a pot of home made beef drippen and the salt celler. We took turns to put a slice of bread on the toasting fork and when the bread was nice and brown we spread a layer of drippen on it, sprinkled it with salt and ate it with great delight. The taste was outstanding but in retrospect it was probably very unhealthy.

When did you begin writing?

I started writing shortly before I retired and effectively writing replaced engineering as my day job.

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

Normally I write during the day and in the evening, but it isn't a totally exclusive activity.

What is this book about?

Based loosely on fact, Against All Odds describes the early years of a young man born into humble circumstances during the reign of Queen Victoria. He shows how a combination of intelligence and perserverance, aided by a little good fortune, can help any child overcome the disadvantages of poor education and lowly birth status in an era when status is all important. In Against All Odds, the first volume of a four-part series, you can read how Jason Smiley Stewart is transformed from callow village youth into a ship's officer.

What inspired you to write it?

In 2004 when I was working in Abu Dhabi, my wife and I visited a small Omani town called Khasab, which is located near to the Straits of Hormuz. One of the attractions there is an area known as the Fjords because of its similarity to Norwegian scenery. In English it is known as the Elphinston Inlet or transliterated from the Arabic, Khor As Sham. We sailed along Khor As Sham in an Arab dhow and anchored at Telegraph Island. I learnt from the dhow captain that a small team of British men had lived on the island during the 1850's in order to operate the repeater station on the newly constructed electric telegraph to India - this was at the very beginning of electronic communication. When I sat on that small, barren lump of rock in the heat of the midday sun, I could only marvel at the fortitude of men who could live and work under such appalling conditions. I believed there was a story to be written about the men and the island.

Who is your biggest supporter?

Until she lost a long battle with cancer, my wife.

Are you a member of a critique group? If no, who provides feedback on your work?

No, I haven't joined a critique group. Until she died my wife critiqued my writing and I was always amazed by her ability to provide cogent advice when her first language was German and not English.

Who is your favorite author?

There are many, but I think Nevil Shute would be top of the list.

Do you have an agent or are you looking for one?

I don't have an agent and have ceased looking for one.

Was the road to publication smooth sailing or a bumpy ride?

Before I discovered Tate Publishing it was an exceptioally frustrating experience, but afterwards everything worked as it should.

If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

Probably not.

Where can readers purchase a copy of your book?

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Against-All-Odds-Stewart-My-Stewart/dp/1598861476/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1293963559&sr=1-2

Tate Publishing http://www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore/book.php?w=1-59886-14-7-6

Do you have a website and/or blog where readers can find out more?

Website is at http://www.jmlangdon.com/

What is the best investment you have made in promoting your book?

Hopefully this one, as my other efforts have not been very successful.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with aspiring authors everywhere?

Don't give up!

What is up next for you?

I have a script for a BBC radio play competition to complete and I am trying to write another novel, but there are not enough hours in the day.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Against All Odds has been translated into German and I am currently looking for a publisher in either Austria or Germany.

Thanks for spending time with us today, John. We wish you much success.

Book Review: Angel Lost by F.M. Meredith

The Rocky Bluff P.D. is back with the latest book in this mystery/crime series, Angel Lost, by F.M. Meredith.

Vice Officer Stacey Wilbur is having trouble keeping the thoughts of her upcoming wedding at bay while at work. Between her job and all the wedding plans, she hasn't had much time to spend with her fiancé, Detective Doug Milligan. Then comes a new case, a flasher showing himself off to women jogging along the beach. Stacey decides to set herself up as bait, and Doug is less than happy about it.

Vaughn Aragon has recently transferred to the Rocky Bluff P.D. from L.A. He says he is looking for a slower lifestyle, but his strange behavior makes some of his fellow officers suspicious.

Abel Navarro has trouble concentrating on his work when his mother begins to show signs of Alzheimer's. One forgotten memo could put an officer's life on the line.

When a mysterious angel appears in the window of a local furniture store, not everyone is sure what to make of it. Is it real? Is it a hoax? One thing's for sure, it means members of the Rocky Bluff P.D. will be working crowd control until the excitement dies down.

The lives of the Rocky Bluff P.D. are never boring.

I began reading the Rocky Bluff P.D. series when Smell of Death came out. That was prior to my working with Marilyn Meredith (also writing under the name F.M. Meredith), to promote her Deputy Tempe Crabtree and Rocky Bluff P.D. books. What I picked up right away on with this series, is that Meredith focused on showing how the personal lives of the members of the Rocky Bluff P.D. are impacted by their jobs. From divorces, to deaths, to marriages, and everything in between, a career in law enforcement means you don't leave your job at the door when you come home.

With Angel Lost, it appears the author decided to concentrate more on the personal lives of her characters than their jobs. Not that there isn't a lot going on at the Rocky Bluff P.D.--there is--it's just that we have Stacey and Doug's upcoming wedding, Gordon Butler (my favorite) planning to move out of Doug's house so that Stacey and her son Davey can move in after the wedding, and Abel's mother developing signs of Alzheimer's. The appearance of the angel in the furniture store window is also something I consider more personal, as Barbara and Ryan Strickland are a bit divided over if it's real or not.

After I read Smell of Death in 2008, I purchased and read all the previous books in the series:

Final Respects
Bad Tidings
Fringe Benefits

I believe the first book I represented through Pump Up Up Book was No Sanctuary, followed by An Axe to Grind. The series has changed publishers since the beginning, so some books are only available through the author's website.

Upon considering Angel Lost against the previous books in the series, I felt it wasn't as edgy as the others. The crimes, though many, didn't hold as much of an element of danger as I have come to expect from the Rocky Bluff P.D. books. While I still enjoyed watching the further development of characters I've grown to love, I kind of was hoping for a major gruesome murder. Does that make me a sick individual?

I was glad to see the addition of Vaughn Aragon to the force. He quickly became a favorite. I hope we see more of him in future books. I'm also hoping my other favorite, Gordon, gets a book that focuses mostly on him. A lot of what he gets into brings comic relief, but you have to like a guy who attracts nothing but bad luck and odd cases.

With Angel Lost, Meredith continues to do what she does best:  provide an entertaining story that draws you in and takes hold of you until the very last word. In addition, all these books, while part of a series, are excellent stand-alone novels. This book, like the others, left me eager for more of the members of the Rocky Bluff P.D. It's a good thing I know 2012 will bring the next book. I'm not sure I could wait patiently otherwise.
