Welcome back to Wednesday. Hope you're having a great week.
Today, we are discussing the books we had to read in school and didn't like. For this post, I stuck to high school, since those are the years when I felt every time I turned around, I was reading another classic that didn't interest me at all. We had to analyze our reading in ways that sucked whatever possible enjoyment you can take out of the required reading, especially because there were tests involved.
I feel like if I picked up All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque today, I might find it more engaging than when I read it freshman year. The main character staying true to himself is one of the best parts of the book.
What books made your list?
I mentioned The Great Gatsby, too. 😊
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I am not the only one who doesn't understand its appeal, Lydia.
DeleteI was really happy when my kids started bringing home their required reading lists. They got to read things like The Hunger Games and Ready Player One, in addition to some of the classics. They were definitely happier to read more modern works.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Aymee. Let them read what they like.
DeleteLord of the flies is a book I think I've blocked from my mind. I was picked on because many people said a bore a striking resemblance to the character of 'Piggy' and they'd run up behind me and snort like a pig. So I'd have picked this one too if it had occurred to me. Because studying this book was not a fun time for me.
ReplyDeleteThat is so awful, George. I'm so sorry they were cruel.
DeleteI think Fitzgerald's place in the literary canon is slipping. I hope so. That new jacket illustration is indeed creepy.
ReplyDeleteI got the message of "Lord of the Flies" but didn't like it. I "knew" I wouldn't like "All Quiet on the Western Front," because war story. (I did read "The Red Badge of Courage" and didn't like it.)
I never understood the book's appeal, Priscilla. Hopefully, we can add more contemporary literature into high school reading material. Thanks for visiting.
